    I mean...is Airport really relevant any more? I don't even think it was relevant 20 years ago. It's basically like Love Story, where it was one of the biggest hits of all time when it came out, but I don't think anybody under the age of 50 even knows what it is.

     

    Now an Airplane reboot? That I could see happen if that Naked Gun remake becomes a hit.

    Re: Twisters' US appeal, it's doing what I predicted in being a smaller-scale TGM. Its got the Americana stuff that appeals to flyover and rural/conservative areas, has tons of action and spectacle for the A-List/Unlimited people who try to see everything in PLFs, feels fresh in tackling a concept and location you don't see very often in blockbusters, and it's a strong, well-made blockbuster with solid critical backing that makes it appealing to snobby coastal elites like me. It's really a perfect stor--uh...perfect...combination of elements.

    Oh, I remember there was a lot of people saying stuff like this a year ago. Like somehow because Barbie and Mario were popular and stuff like Little Mermaid or Guardians of the Galaxy underperformed (though still made more money than most movies would ever dream of), that people were sick of these sequels and nostalgic toy commercials and wanted something fresh and new...and somehow these nostalgic toy commercials that only made their money because they are nostalgic toy commercials were proof of that? I even got pushback from people when I said the Barbie movie was a toy commercial. Which like...huh????????

    I mean even if it was ready for Memorial Day, which I doubt it was, there would still be a conflict of interest because Twisters and Furiosa are both WB movies overseas. And while I know Furiosa didn't do anything, I'm sure Warner had higher expectations, and it's not like these studios have an obvious crystal ball that can predict everything that will happen. In the end, while we're probably not gonna get a sequel, Twisters is likely going to be a strong performer domestically to make up for OS shortcomings, locked to be in the top 10 for the summer, will probably be a big hit on PVOD in a month. I don't think Uni/Warner's kicking themselves because they didn't have it open on a holiday...well, okay Uni's not kicking themselves, but the Zas sucks, so that's an even nicer win lol

    I mean I guess? But Twister was a big hit OS back in the day. At 254M, it was only behind Independence Day and Mission: Impossible for movies that year. And like obviously Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt are great, they weren't Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson-level movie stars that sold the film on their presence.

     

    Just seems weird to me that tornadoes would be totally cool and exciting outside of America back in 1996, but then only appeal to Americans in 2024. Maybe the country music is to blame here? Or maybe WB just didn't know what they were doing?
