It's not that the movie itself looks all that revolting. Paint-by-numbers tale of fame vs. friendship but it is what it is. But what it isn't is Jem. The only thing they've retained of the original is that they're females in a band. Hopefully you have more of a connection to Transformers (a movie/series that, for all the bitter complaints against it, at least retained the core tenets of the IP) so this makes sense: Picture if you will a "re-imagining" of Transformers where instead of sentient robots engaged in cosmic warfare, it is instead a grounded story about man-made robots being used to compete in one of those robot battling competitions. As these robots are inanimate objects, the story now focuses on a father and son. The mother of this family has recently passed away and they have been growing distant. Building the robot (let's call it Optimus Prime) for this competition and going through the first few rounds brings them back together and helps them heal as a family for the first time UNTIL "insert whatever here" drives them apart just before the finals. Wham, bam, standard "love of family conquers all" plot. That is what this movie is, a re-purposed script with a beloved license haphazardly pasted onto it.
