If estimates hold it should have between $1.25-1.30bn by the end of the weekend. For the sake of this post let's go 1.25. Russia isn't including as they open on Monday but I'm imagining if it did it would be at least $20mn at the low end of expectations. So at the low end including Russia we have $1.27bn OW, we'd only need a 2.13~multi to hit Avatar's total. Even with the huge opening, I don't see any logic to endgame of a multi <2.13. This would be incredibly low due to; standard Marvel and Avenger legs, the presales we're already seeing for the weeks/weekends to come, the reviews and audience scores, the great WOM, and it being a finale.

I'm not an expert but I feel this is locked at this point. I personally don't see a multi of less than 2.15 possible.

I can see your logic, and you are probably right.

But, to be the devil's advocate, isn't it likely that after such monstrous OW numbers, a massive decline is in store?

Because it's the finale, people want to see it ASAP. more urgently than they did for infinity war.

It is nothing bad against the film.

Absolutely. People (including me) were desperate to see it ASAP so they could avoid the inevitable spoilers on social media, or even on TV and from friends etc...

Based on the current estimates and actuals we have for the weekend numbers, ratings, WOM, and expected repeat-viewing, the floor is now $2.7billion.

Yes, the floor is already on par with the highest grossing movie of all time (not including inflation)..

Really? What makes you say that?

I certainly don't want to put the cart before the horse.   But let me just drop this.   We Might (bolded and capitalized for emphasis) be looking at a 200 million second weekend

Does it have the necessary word of mouth? Because w/o superb word of mouth, that is not remotely possible.

Deathly Hallows was crazy in all aspects. When the book came out, it came out and midnight and my wife made me go stand in line for an hour to buy the freaking thing. It was actually kind of fun because the line went all the way around the block. A bunch of folks had camped out and were wearing costumes.

    What we do for love!

Does anyone else think Far From Home could disappoint ever so slightly a la Antman and the Wasp? It just seems like people may be emotionally drained after Endgame and need a little break?

I am expecting the opposite. People around the world seem to be ever more hooked on everything MCU. It's the gift that keep on giving.

Infinity war is all about Thanos - you follow most of the movie through his eyes and connect with him as a character.

That is why the movie is so different and groundbreaking. Even though you have invested so much time with all of the heroes, by the end of the film you almost want Thanos to win because he is such a compelling character who believes that what he is doing is for the greater good of the universe and even makes his own sacrifices to achieve his goal.

He is relentless and determined and by the end of the movie you are almost willing him on to collect the final couple of stones - which he does. If you watch the movie from his point of view then it is a proper ending and a satisfying (although hollow) one.

Thanos is such a compelling villain, because just like Darth Vader is motivated by an inner passion and sense of purpose that almost no "good guy" is ever allowed to have in Hollywood movies. This is why The Empire Strikes Back & Infinity War are two of the best fantasy films ever and absolute benchmarks for their respective genres.

    ROTJ is nonsense.

’A legion of my best troops await them.’

Proceeds to get by a bunch of small bears with wood-sticks and rocks.

When I was a teen, I wanted to believe that ROTJ is just a flawed masterpiece, that it was just the Ewoks that spoil an otherwise great Star Wars movie.

But no, ROTJ is bad overall, almost Prequel Trilogy bad.

Am I the only one who thought Endgame was miles better than Infinity War ?

    Infinity War 7.7/10

    Endgame 10/10

You are definitely in the extreme minority.

Edit: Endgame "miles better" than Infinity War? Thinking about your statement yet again, yes, you are the only one.

Guardians Of The Galaxy says hi.

A lot of Marvel comic fans didn't even know who they were.

That's my point, we have had several obscure superheroes being massive hits in recent years (GotG, Aquaman, Venom etc etc) It has been hit after hit after hit for SH movies, almost regardless of character popularity or reviews. Now, despite the fact that Shazam seems to be getting excellent reviews, the early numbers indicate a relative disappointment. I am pointing out the fact that Shazam seems to be a trend-breaker.

I really miss this type of slow juggernaut run where a film remains flat or inexplicably increases without a holiday from week to week, month to month. And being #1 at the box office for 15 consecutive weeks, that's something we will never see domestically again because of major tentpoles releasing in every month. Much more exciting to follow than a gigantic OW followed by normal drops in my opinion.

BO runs such as that of Titanic were extremely uncommon in the 90s as well. The only movies with ultra-leggy runs (but at a much smaller scale) from that era that I can now think of were: a) As Good As it Gets, b) Good Will Hunting, c) There's Something About Mary, d) Scream. Also, Forrest Gump from 1994 can be considered the next best thing after Titanic and maybe also The Sixth Sense.

And heres where we fundamentally disagree. After Attack of the Clones, the Star Wars franchise was officially declared dead and ruined by the "fans". Its a never-ending circle of a part of the SW fanbase which is incredibly hatefull to nearly everything related to new Star Wars films that come out.

And still, after Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith would go on to become the biggest hit of 2005. Because in my eyes, the vast majority of SW-moviegoers - the GA - doesnt care one bit about internet hatred for Star Wars. All the GA wants is an entertaining film that pleases them.

And as long as Episode IX delivers exactly that, it will be a giant hit. Domestically, i see no real danger for main episode SW films. Overseas on the other hand is a different question.

Okay, neither of us has a crystal ball.  Maybe you are right and I am wrong. Maybe also somehow Episode 9 is great and takes theaters by storm, but if I had to bet, I would say that it won't do that well, meaning that it will gross even less than SW8.

I hope we are here this time next year and see what happens then.

And somehow it still makes tons of money.

People here (i personally think) tend to underestimate how bulletproof the SW Franchise is in the US. If Episode IX is well received by audiences, it will explode.

The Last Jedi did immense damage, damage that no Jar-Jar or clunky one-liners could ever do. This was reflected in Solo's BO, and will be reflected again and more emphatically with Episode 9.

You can quote me on this in a year's time.

Once you understand superhero movies is not a genre, you will realize the superhero over saturation won't happen.

Not only are SH movies a genre, they are a very narrow one at that.

The good thing about this narrow genre though, is that it can be combined with elements from other genres with ease. Also, there is so much existing material from decades of comic books, which makes it easier to pitch more and more movies.

I am sure similar things were said about westerns during the 1960s and rom coms during the 90s.

The underlying trend with SH movies is clear. There is absolutely nothing to suggest a turnaround anytime soon.

Of course nobody has a crystal ball, and consumer preferences do change, but as things stand, SH movies look like the best bet for many years to come. People have been predicting a superhero fatigue for more than a decade now, and all that has happened is that SH movies have become even more insanely popular all over the world. These are the facts.

I guess MPR's run is fine if you look at it through the lens of a musical, but I still can't help but believe Disney did expect huge things. Reactions do seem to be somewhat divisive. Lots of people either love it or hate it it seems.

CBM mania has officially reached a level I'm not sure has ever been seen for any genre at the box office before. I don't believe the GA would have been so easily willing to give AQM's cringey dialogue and cliche plot/characters a free pass in spite of the visuals for it to be doing this well even a year ago. Same goes for what happened with Venom. I think BP and IW seem to have shifted the CBM craze into a full blown monster. I'm legitimately concerned for the future of non-CBM big budget films right now. If this only escalates in 2019 and studios see that's all that can really make big bank, pretty soon all the studios are going to give up on tentpoles outside of superheroes. We may have a truly massive genre over saturation headed our way.

All evidence points towards sustained popularity for SH movies. The need studios have for franchises, plus the extensive material provided by decades of comic books, plus ever more potent CGI are the 3 factors contributing to this perfect storm.

The thing is that the popularity of SH movies just keeps on growing all over the planet. This will be the major genre for many, many years to come.

  17. Hollywood seems to be having a banner year in 2018, despite there not being too many tent-pole releases. A Quiet Place, Halloween, Venom, The Meg, A Star Is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians, The Nun have all over-performed or massively over-performed.

Also, Jurassic World 2, Deadpool 2, Mission Impossible 6, Ant-Man & The Wasp have all performed close to high expectations.

Infinity War somehow managed to exceed stratospheric expectations.

As for Black Panther & The Incredibles 2, well, I think that no comment is required.

Question is, can Hollywood really take things to the next level next year with its endless stream of high-profile releases?

this 1993 legal thriller based on the John Grisham book made  $158,348,367  which adjusts to a whopping  $330,848,600.  It was the fourth highest grossing movie of the year after Jurassic Park, Mrs. Doubtfire, and The Fugitive. This is one of the prime example's of Tom Cruise's massive starpower at the time and how we have no one today that can compare

The Firm is my favorite example when differentiating between the current era of BO (almost totally reliant on SH movies & animation) and that of the 80s and 90s, when star power was a massive factor.

It also demonstrates how absolutely immense Cruise's popularity was back then. His mere presence in a movie made it a blockbuster.
