A movie with Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman is LOC-...oh wait, nvm

I wasn't signed up to the board yet when that happened but at least in that case Man of Steel had mixed reviews and the new Batman was Ben Affleck which a lot of people did not think would work even at the time of the announcement. Plus, Snyder.  Some folks hate Snyder

There was a lot going for Batman v Superman but there was also a lot of question marks.  What are the question marks for the next Star Wars? Or if Downey does Iron Man 4? Some things just.... are..

    You keep using that word...

Automatic? This is a direct sequel and will not need to worry about plugging in this character or that character. It's not going to be overstuffed. It'll be a smaller linear story. All audiences have to do is watch the first one if they hadn't already. Critics adored the first one. Gunn is returning with the same cast.  It would be shocking if the RT number was below 80.

There are no guarantees when it comes to a movie doing over a billion dollars so no one is going to "lock it in." I mean if the holy trinity of DC can be susceptible and not make a billion dollars then I refuse to believe there are films locked to make a billion dollars when no one knows a single thing about them.

    - Same cast

    - Disney marketing

    - Last one had amazing reviews

    - Last one had great WOM

    - Will be similar in tone

    - 80%+ RT locked in

    We know plenty about it.

$773M worldwide as an unknown property. Huge critical success and great WOM. I think it will at least match the $333M in the states but this time will do more than $440M OS. If they make the sequel very much the same in tone there's no way it'll be under 80% RT.

  5. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will make over a billion. The Avengers with Thanos will make over a billion. The rest will do very well also. I'm more interested to see what will happen once the Thanos saga is completed. That's where it's going to be difficult to keep people giving a shit.  Plus, Downey might be gone by then too.  And others. Will a new cast of characters see the same success? Downey as Iron Man..  I mean everyone can talk about Disney and their marketing and all this shit but Downey as Iron Man is the main draw.

Yet the fart/ass jokes made the movie the highest grossing X-Men movie and possible revolutionizing the superhero movie industry

I liked Deadpool but some people's trash is another person's treasure. Ass jokes can be funny but maybe they can be juvenile and fail to crack a smile.

The newest trailer that was before X-Men made SS seem like the Harley Quinn show.  I totally get it because it looks like Margot knocked it out of the park and they're doing the solo film but the tone seemed quite different from the initial one.  I also read somewhere that there was reshoots because audience reaction was that it wasn't funny enough, did anyone else see that?

Nobody had seen it at that point outside of maybe a few executives. Ayer himself and other sources said that they did reshoots to add more action.  That Warner enjoyed the film and gave him more money to do so.  What's the real story?  who knows. Those guys over at Collider swear that the movie has always been a dark comedy and I would have thought that myself given Joker being in it and Harley Quinn. Both are comedy characters.

  8. Regarding "the critics" discussion, I think some folks need to just look at RT a little closer is all. X-Men: Apocalypse is the latest example.

    1. Yes, they consider a movie FRESH if it reaches 60% but does that mean a film with 50% is "hated by the critics."  All it means is that half of the critics liked it and half of the critics did not like it.  This used to be called "Mixed reviews".

    2. Even the reviews themselves are a little sketchy in terms of how they come to be Fresh or Rotten.  I've seen films scored with a "C+" as a Rotten and films scored with a "2.5" a Fresh.  I don't know how they go about it but obviously if a friend told me "I'd give it a C+" that might mean different things to different people.  A C+ might be "Okay, he said it was a C+ and he normally hates these so maybe it'll be a B+ for me"

  9. Regarding CW, I don't think the WOM is terrible but I imagine it goes "yeah man, it's cool have you seen the rest?" "No, I havent."

Or scenario 2. "It's good but I don't feel the need to see it again soon"

Or scenario 3: "these are all starting to be the same"

I've played every Halo game and I probably wouldn't have watched it. I couldn't tell you any details about the story or characters to save my life. I know that humans are fighting Aliens but that's about that.

That's all I needed it to be. Independenice Day will have to itch that scratch.

  11. Snyder and WB really outdid themselves with this one and this is coming from someone who enjoyed BvS (it has flaws don't get me wrong!) and really liked Man of Steel. It had more presales than CW and a bigger Friday. The anticipation was there. All it needed was decent WOM and it would have FLEW past a billion. I think it would have beat out CW domestically too.

Now instead of Pepsi they are RC Cola. I hope SS is good and does well.

Yeah. And it's understandable to be upset. But, box office performance only matters to the studio and producers. The money a movie makes does not affect the day to day lives of fans.

It does if you enjoy the films and want more of them.  For example, even if I don't care for X-Men: Apocalypse, I still enjoyed the hell out of X2, First Class and Days of Future Past. I want more of these.  I don't know if this will be a franchise killer but as I said earlier, I think we'll see Deadpool moved into the lead role moving forward with these properties.
