Yeah it is strange. I'm guessing the distributors lost hope in it and just dumped it.

Ben Affleck, Argo
Tom Hooper, Les Miserables
Ang Lee, Life of Pi
Steven Spielberg, Lincoln
Robert Zemeckis, Flight or David O Russell, Silver Linings Playbook

I don't know. For a movie to reach $40m, it has to have some pretty huge buzz and right now I'm not sensing much anticipation. It will do fine but I don't think it will have the broad interest and appeal of The Dark Knight Rises or The Avengers.
-
I don't see Skyfall generating even the same interest as The Dark Knight Rises. That's why I'm being safe and putting it in the 30s. You have to also remember that Bond is huge in England unlike anywhere else and that's why the numbers are so ridiculously high. You might argue that Bond is big here as well but not on the same level.Does anyone else hate how in Australia during late October and November, there is NOTHING on. And then everything comes out on Boxing Day and January. Argo is an exception this year. It's sad that Bachelorette made more money opening weekend in Australia than it's entire run in the US. Chick flicks seem to perform really well here, even when they are terrible.

I don't know. I didn't think either were particularly exceptional. Both were rather forgettable and shallow.

I suppose Flight may hold well during the holiday season. It's good to see an adult film that's not about explosions doing well.
-
Can Flight make it to 100m?

Haha, Extremely Loud ticked so many Academy Award bait boxes. Skyfall however, is the polar opposite of an Academy friendly film.
-
No slots exist, I don't know why people think that. The Avengers is not good enoughThe Dark Knight Rises is not as good as The Dark KnightThe Hobbit has a 'been there done that' feel to it, it also looks more comedic and comicalSkyfall is a James Bond movie and the 23rd in a series, I can't see it happening at all

Moonrise is too slight to make it in and doesn't have the passionate base that Beasts has.
-
It's more British and yet it's produced by 2 Americans and by an American studioI just don't think the Brits are going to see Skyfall as the most prestigious picture of their industry
-
There is no way Skyfall is getting in, new rules or not. Will 300 people really choose it as the best film of the year? The Academy takes themselves very seriously and I doubt they would be willing to nominate a James Bond movie.

Glad Argo is doing well here.

Great to see Argo at number one but I still question whether it can reach 100 million. People that are saying that the Oscars will bring it back fail to realise that it will be out on DVD by then.

The Intouchables will really appeal to that older demographic that ate up The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The King's Speech, Red Dog, The Iron Lady and Mao's Last Dancer. They seem to be quite prolific moviegoers in Australia.
-
Why would it not open in NY or LA, the two biggest cities in America where most of the Academy live?

with screeners, release dates have no impact

It's too soon since The Hurt Locker to reward ZDT. It was also a huge stretch for the academy to give that film a best picture oscar and that was mainly motivated by the story behind it all (the first female director, the "david vs. goliath" story).

50 million for Skyfall seems a bit extreme. I'm still saying it will definitely be in the 30s but perhaps not the 40s.
