I'm sick of this "audiences don't care" narrative. They DO care, it's just moviegoing is too expensive nowadays. That's why every year there are a few HUGE hits and the rest ranges from good to meh.

It's just an excuse, it doesn't explain most movies underperfoming or flopping this year including once reliable genres, moviegoing wasn't much cheaper last year or in 2022. Sometimes it's just simple "they don't care anymore", there's no deeper explanation.

Honestly, I feel like right before Furiosa would’ve been the perfect time to drop the trailer. Just place it in front of a critically-acclaimed R-rated blockbuster. Or at least Bad Boys 4. Especially since they showed footage at CinemaCon. Moana 2 is a mini-series that was turned into a film and even that has a trailer out for its November release.

I mean A Quiet Place is PG-13? Doesn't make much sense to drop it in front of PG-13 movie, even if hard PG-13. They'll likely release the trailer this month because it's definitely time to finally launch first promo, no reason to market it much later unless it's Passengers or Aquaman 2 type of movie when studio has no confidence in it and just drags marketing campaign start as close to its release date as they can.

Fede said something about avoiding spoilers, but here we are, Asian girl kissing a facehugger on the poster.

Yeah, I know, it's in the teaser, but I think that was a mistake, there's only six charecters. Can we have some intrigue?

(Not watching trailer tomorrow, I learned my lesson with Prometheus and Covenant)

There's no intrigue, we all know how it ends:

Ripley clone and good android survive, and fly off into the sunset, everyone else dies, good guys saved the day once more until next sequel.

Nobody notices such things beyond the crazies that devour every snippet of info. Besides, who says she is the only bald character? Is that set in stone? Maybe somebody starts out with longer hair and gets a buzzcut later, just to throw you off. Pal! :D

The cast is too small to reach like this. They already showed who dies in the very first teaser.

Pointing out that films with reshoots, extensive or otherwise, aren't always successful simply proves Sturgeon was on to something.

80% of movies with massive reshoots aren't successful, "aren't always" is to say the least.

What I did imply, and now outright will state is: THEY SAY NEARLY NOTHING ABOUT THE *FINISHED* QUALITY OF A FILM.

They say the movie doesn't work in studio's mind, extensive reshoots and normal reshoots/touch ups are not the same thing, what happend to, let's say, Justice League weren't normal reshoots, extensive reshoots happen when the movie tests poorly.

But what I *will* push back on, and quite strongly, is the idea that reshoots, again extensive or otherwise, are a sign that something WILL be bad,

That is utter bullshit, I am not at all afraid to say it.  Complete and utter horseshit, actually.

If there is any sort of correlation between "extensive reshoots" and "poor film", I'd be more than a little surprised to see if it was that much stronger (or weaker for that matter) than an overall correlation between films being good or bad that didn't have more than industry standard additional photography.

It's not 100% guarantee, but numbers are numbers, in most cases massives reshoots don't save the movie, but make it even worse, those reshoots are often done with poor intentions. For every film with extensive reshoots that turned out to be good I can give you at least 5 where it made things worse. And again, I don't mean "normal reshoots", I mean reshoots which completely change the movie.

reshots are a good sign. Hollywood makes them since ever, most Hitchcock movies had reshots. You test movies and then you work again on them to make things better seeing the audience reaction. What's wrong? It's like the work of an editor for a book.

As I said, I don't mean any reshoots, I mean specifically very extensive reshoots that change the movie completely. The problem is when reshoots made the movie worse and it tests worse, they don't reverse it to better cuts, but lock the last one and call it a day.

It is the Year 2024 and some people STILL think reshoots, extensive or otherwise, are a *BAD* thing.

    Like, it boggles the mind.

Why? Extensive reshoots are never a good sign and there are more examples when extensive reshoots made the movie worse, not better. For every Fury Road or Rogue One we have Justice League, Rollerball, Gigli, Dark Phoenix, Suicide Squad etc.

All the endless talk here of months of reshoots, of the entire movie being scrapped and redone, people saying "why are they showing footage at Cinemacon since they're obviously cutting it all", and the actual amount of resboots is:

Three weeks. And it's mostly action scenes.

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/captain-america-brave-new-world-reshoots-1235912919/

Didn't it already have massive reshoots? So it's not 3 weeks, but more like months overall and multiple rounds of them.

    • the just too "Hollywood": the casts - in particular Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger in TROY and Josh Hartnett and Jamie King in Pearl, are just too dolled up, too attractive, and just take the average viewer out of the film.

What? Helen of Troy is supposed to be very beautiful, "the most beautiful woman in the world" in fact, who else did you expect, some ugly or below average looking chick?

where Theron post Fury Road is what people wanted

People should be careful what they wish for since Miller considered to make Furiosa an evil tyrant like Immortan Joe in a potential follow up to Fury Road because it makes sense in his perception, but I don't think that's something people would want to see. Fury Road clearly ended on a note where there's no reason to come back to the character, her arc is finished, all Miller had to do is make another Mad Max with Hardy, but it's not happening after this.

So, with Furiosa flopping, how is it that Dune Part 2 succeeded where Furiosa failed?

Perhaps Dune delivered a unique theatrical experience whereas Furiosa was just giving more of the same (in terms of action set pieces), but not as good as Fury Road?

Mad Max more niche? More weird?

    Better Dune marketing campaign?

Dune Part 2 is a direct sequel with the same cast, more popular actors, better trailers and marketing. It's many things. Max Max being more niche plays a role here too, Fury Road barely broke even despite its reception.

Maybe some levity for this thread. I just posted this in the Classic Conversation thread, but what do people think of this list?

Alphabetical order: Austin Butler, Timothée Chalamet, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, Jenna Ortega, Glen Powell, Florence Pugh, Sydney Sweeney, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zendaya

I think Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya shouldn’t be here, they’re definitely not “new.” They’ve consistently had critical and commercial success since around 2017.

35 year old Glen Powell being a new “young” star is…a choice (I doubt a woman would even be considered for this list if her age didn’t begin with number less than 3).

Paul Mescal feels like he’s in the same category as Saoirse Ronan: indie darling but with no commercial success to back them. Putting him here before Gladiator II seems presumptuous. Ronan also tried the commercial route.

I like Jenna Ortega but putting her on here seems early. Wednesday was huge though and I think she has potential.

Jacob Elordi, a supporting actor in Saltburn, is on the list, but not Barry Keoghan, the lead?

    Tom Holland needs better projects

Fun stats: 2 MCU actors, 5 Dune actors, 3 Euphoria actors.

Timothee is the most proven one for sure, everyone else is under big question mark. I kinda root for Powell because he's likable and has movie star charisma, he just needs right projects. Austin Butler is great too.
