Love Bullock and Paulson (don't really care for anyone else in the cast) so I hope it does well for them but...a necklace? That's kinda lame. The whole MET Gala thing is lame, tbh. It just doesn't have heft. A casino con is at least exciting.

I don't see men being interested in a movie about a heist at a fashion show.

Fashion Show?  Fashion.  Show.  It's the MET GALA.  It's THE event of the fashion season, and the biggest fundraiser for the Met Museum.  If you doubt the gravitas and grandeur of the Met Gala, I would suggest watching fabulously extra documentary "The First Monday in May" (available on Netflix).  The casino heist has been done.  This is fun AND glamorous.

(Though I can't figure out the theme of the fake Gala.  It looks 18th Century French?)

  2. My social media dash is so excited. They keep screaming HAROLD!  😂😂😂

Upon another review of the trailer: Sarah Paulson better be a Soccer Mom Lesbian. I need more lesbians. I also better get an Anna Wintour cameo!

Though I don’t know why they showed Anne H as more than just some famous actress. I think they should have kept that plot point out of the trailer.

I also like this release date.  I see this being nice and leggy.  I wish it was a little farther away from the Incredibles 2, cause that cuts into the Mom Demo. Still! It will be nice counter programming to Solo, Deadpool, and Jurassic World. AAAAND...

It comes out a month BEFORE the ACTUAL Met Gala. Depending on how much Anna wants to cross-promote (or depending on how Extra Rihanna’s people want to be) this will be EXCELLENT PR for the movie. I can’t wait to see the whole cast show up on the red carpet!

I stick by what I said. All those thousands of hours reading Star Wars books, comics, and tons of hours playing Star Wars video games were for not.

I don’t know if know if this is worth it, but here I go.

    I call such bullshit.

Like, if you are truly that upset, I sympathize. I went through a similar meltdown during Marvel’s Nazi Cap storyline.

    Yet.

One movie or storyline can’t ruin your childhood or end a love affair with a 40 year old IP. There is too much content. Go find what you love about Star Wars and embrace it.  And if you can’t find it in canon, there is this little website called Archive of Your Own. I am sure they have the stories you are looking for.

  4. From everything I'm seeing, there is no middle ground.  This is either THE WORST EVA, you have RUINED MY LIFE RIAN, or GROUNDBREAKING, RISK TAKING, GENIUS.  I think that might help word of mouth, since if everyone's telling you different things, you should go see it for yourself.

I think the biggest issue will be repeat viewers.  How is the divisiveness going to affect repeating viewings? Which is usually how these franchise films push themselves over the top.  (That said, I still think doing 800m DOM instead of 936m is nothing to cry home about).

  5. Saw this today with my mom.  There were moments that felt incredibly authentic (esp. that moment when Lady Bird was like "What's the number? Give Me that number, and I will work my ass off to write you a check."  I've had that conversation verbatim with my parents.)

Overall though, Meh.  I'm not getting the Award hype (maybe for Laurie Metcalf, who was outstanding).  I thought it was slow, and the parts without her mother felt so underwhelming.  As others have pointed it, this film kind of falls into that Juno, Virgin Suicides, white-girl indie flick that I would have DIED over when I was 11, but now I just find tired.

    5/10

  6. The guys in front of me in Star Wars line tonight were talking about how the film looked like a "nostalgia cash grab" and that if Spielberg wasn't involved they'd skip it.

I've been thinking a lot about this movie, and I don't feel it will break out. The second trailer felt underwhelming; like, once they explained the plot, I was like "that's it? It's Willy Wonka? That... nice."  It feels like a soon to be a cult classic.  I also am struggling to see how it will attract a female audience.  It feels very male, so I'm not getting the 'female empowerment' vibe.  That leaves us with: I don't see anything to thirst over or to ship from the trailer, to be completely shallow & stereotypical.

I don't like lazy marketing. The spots I keep getting for this are nothing but a shot of John Cena in the booth, then the bull dancing to terrible Latin dubstep. And then the title card. That's it.

That is not how you SELL a movie. I have seen better car commercials lately, and they are generally terrible. Put some effort into your product.

I would counter saying that showing John Cena in the booth is a good marketing tool.  Young kids might not know John Cena's voice, but they do know his face.

"Maxim estimates that MoviePass has already reached 1 million subscribers and is well on its way to the 2 million mark." (Maxim estimate - from Bezinga article Dec 5th)...

So, these folks are wildcards when comparing presales for TLJ to RO (and TFA)...do these folks prebuy, or will they just jump on to open seats when they see them each morning at theaters...

I mean, it was 200K subscribers in September...but now we're talking 1M+ and rapidly increasing...so the impact on presales which may not happen vs same day that will is gonna grow...

It will probably depend on if they want to see it in IMAX 3D, which is not covered by the card.

  9. NGL, Jeff Goldblum saying "life finds a way" and hearing John Williams iconic score, did give me THE FEELS.  But so did seeing all the dinos go off a cliff -- and that gave me the wrong ones.  Like, I'm Not Here For That Garbage wrong ones.

For Box Office: I don't see this touching Infinity War's DOM.  IW has a whole month to itself.  Fallen Kingdom has The Incredibles 2 viaing for the same family audience, and it's only got two weeks until Ant-Man & Wasp.

  10. I'm In.

Solo will have a higher OW, but it will be crazy front loaded (think BvS).  Incredibles will have a respectable OW, but way better legs (think Wonder Woman).

Unless Ron Howard can pull a miracle out of his toosh, I don't see how this won't be a trainwreck. Nothing about it sounds exciting (sans OMGZ STAR WARS), Donald Glover looked like he was being held hostage in that official cast photo they released, and Paul Bettany replacing Michael K. Williams won't sit well with certain members of the GA.

Incredibles has everything the OP said going for it.  I think it takes the round, for sure.
