  1. Each school has different vacation dates. I think for most schools, summer vacation starts around July 20th and ends around August 20th, with middle/high schools having shorter breaks than elementary schools.
  2. Conan is a dark horse for me - it is one of the most popular anime/manga series in Korea, but its movies have not done that well (all under 700,000 admissions, with the most recent one at around 400,000). Of course, considering how well Japanese anime movies have done this year, it could surprise us.
  3. Dolby Cinema tickets for Barbie's opening day opened c. 20 minutes ago - will be interesting to see how Barbie PS changes as tickets for the premium theaters become available
  4. According to Korean media, Elemental passed 4 million admissions at 6:37pm local time with 4,000,150 admissions
  5. Steal the Show (the song by Lauv for Elemental) is #10 on Melon, Korea's largest domestic music site (and #2 overall behind YouTube Music). I can't remember the last time a song from a foreign movie entered the top 10
  6. I'm not surprised Barbie presales are low because presales aren't open yet for premium theaters (IMAX, Dolby Cinema, etc.), and the movie doesn't have a dedicated fanbase that'll book the movie immediately (like the Japanese anime movies releasing soon). I expect it to ramp up closer to release.
  7. Elemental will be the first movie in 5 years to have four consecutive weeks in which the total weekly admissions increased. The previous one was Bohemian Rhapsody (released October 2018 in Korea) Week 1 (Oct 31 - Nov 6): 864,478 Week 2 (Nov 7 - Nov 13): 1,197,067 Week 3 (Nov 14 - Nov 20): 1,332,523 Fantastic Beasts 2 opened this weekend Week 4 (Nov 21 - Nov 27): 1,508,150 It ultimately ended its run with around 9.94 million admissions.
  8. My guess is people are enjoying the last day of sunshine before it starts raining tomorrow - it's forecasted to rain everyday next week
  9. Korean media reporting that Elemental passed 3,000,000 admissions as of 3:42pm local time today. Elemental has also been trending on Korean Twitter all day - I don't think the movie will die anytime soon
  10. I was lucky enough to get MI7 preview tickets for tomorrow at Yongsan IMAX, but the competition was intense - the movie will definitely do really well on premium screens (Dolby Cinema, IMAX)
  11. Frozen sputtered out about reaching 10 million admissions in early March because Disney decided to release the movie on VOD immediately afterwards. The movie performed really well on VOD, topping the charts for 4 weeks and killing off a lot of demand to see the movie in cinemas.
  12. It's rare for a movie to have three consecutive weeks in which the total weekly admissions increased. Other films that accomplished this feat include Frozen (released January 2014) and The First Slam Dunk (released January 2023), but they both benefited from having Lunar New Year in their third week. Elemental Week 1 (June 14 - June 20): 619,241 Week 2 (June 21 - June 27): 750,607 Week 3 (June 28 - July 4): 1,033,077 The First Slam Dunk Week 1 (Jan 4 - Jan 10): 495,217 Week 2 (Jan 11 - Jan 17): 511,354 Week 3 (Jan 18 - Jan 24): 580,992 Lunar New Year from Jan 21 - Jan 24 Frozen Week 1 (Jan 16 - Jan 22): 1,709,288 Week 2 (Jan 23 - Jan 29): 2,187,159 Week 3 (Jan 30 - Feb 5): 2,599,376 Lunar New Year from Jan 30 - Feb 1
  13. I'm getting the impression that many Korean women, in particular, are seeing themselves in Amber - I've seen tweets saying Amber embodies the "eldest daughter" (e.g., she lives according to her family's wishes but yearns for something else). I'm not surprised it's breaking out.
