What I really dont get is why, despite having all the time in the world, did Cameron still left himself vulnerable to the "weak story" line of attack

cameron says he spent 5 years working on the scripts with a group of writers, but it seems that even the GA, and not only "prentious " critics are finding some issue with the story, heck, I even found 2 reviews which gave it a 100/100 saying that the story is nothing special

If youre making a sequel to the highest grossing movie of all time why wouldnt you try to adress what some see as the originals biggest problem?

theres even people complaining that the story is too similar to the original, which makes wonder what exactly it is that he was doing during those 5 years

He said himself that he was following his tried-and-true sequel method of taking the same general plot of things and flipping it on its head. How that does or doesn't work for you may vary. Now that he's played that hand, Avatar 3 will probably not follow that formula. The best thing is that we don't have to wait 13 years to see if that's true.

When Cameron said he might not direct all 4 Avatar sequels, I thought my #1 pick to replace him would be Del Toro. Proficient with VFX, big scale action and good too at pulling emotional strings. Hell he won an Oscar for a movie named "The Shape of Water" about a love story between a human and a humanoid creature. I'm sure he could do something interesting with Avatar.

Now given the fact he has already seen the sequel, I wouldn't be surprised if that possibility was discussed. But of course I'm still hoping Cameron will direct all 4!

Iger will fly to New Zealand and fight Jim in the parking lot if that's what it takes for him to direct 4 & 5.

I guess no one can know yet enough to answer my questions, but I still have to wonder will Avatar 2 have:

    Spaceship scenes/orbit entry scenes?

Humans piloting avatar creatures as a meaningful plot device? (so not just a token scene)

A large number of scenes dealing with the plot from the human perspective?

A mass battle scene involving dozens of human vehicles/large mechs/aircraft (not just seacraft)

    - Probably as a part of the intro getting the audience up to speed.

    - Avatars were for diplomacy and the RDA is done playing nice. Avatars have been replaced by Recoms

    - Maybe. There are a bunch of scientist characters we've seen nothing of. Edie Falco is playing a general and we've seen nothing of her.

    - Maybe

I was under the impression that Spider will be the Middle-man between audience and Na'vi character since general audience is more likely to relate to a human character to a CG character but the focus now seem shifted to Kiri and Lo'ak's love interest. I suspect his role got reduced as they approach the final cut since there are so many sub-plots and characters out there, way more loaded than A1 and hence the longer movie length. But given the marketing still feature Jack Champion quite a lot, he should still get some notable screen time.

He's missing because most of his screen time is with Quaritch and his crew so there's probably a bunch of action scenes and major story stuff they want to save for people to discover in the theater.

  5. The roll out is a mess. Regal tickets are already available to zero fanfare. No idea when tickets everywhere else are going live and the final trailer doesn't drop until like 9pm est. On top of all that, Avatar 1 comes back to Disney+ but it's not the remaster. I've given grace to the marketing in the past but even stuff that should be a layup has proven to be difficult.

  6. New trailer premieres Wednesday during Good Morning America.

Wednesday, Nov. 2 —Actress Angela Bassett (“Wakanda Forever”); actor Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”); exclusive world premiere of “Avatar: The Way of Water” trailer; Oprah’s Favorite Things edition of Deals and Steals with ABC e-commerce editor Tory Johnson and Oprah Daily creative director Adam Glassman
