This seems way too anedoctal. You don't simply walk into being the highest grossing film by lack of competition, hell in a ton of markets especially in Europe that's a title it still holds to this day (and living in a country where this is the case, yeah, the movie still seems beloved to me).

Considering the movie had very strong reactions not just from the audience (the film had an A/A+ cinemascore just about everywhere lol) but also from critics (where it had very strong reviews and even got nominated for BP in a time where that was starting to become increasingly harder for blockbusters), I'd say there was (and is) a little more to it than just people liking the visuals.

It might be anecdotal, but do you really believe that Avatar would be #1 in Germany if not for 3D?

Since there are no polls (I guess, didn't bother to look tbh) WHY people went so often into the movie, I can obviously only tell you from my experience, and I went in only because it "looked cool" (not entirely true, would have seen it most likely anyway, but my friends hammered me with "the 3D looks insane, you have to see it...) and even my gf at the time who I don't think had ever seen a movie twice in their life up till that point wanted to see the 3D again.

And yes, the movie had no "competition". How do you define competition? Mostly same genre I guess. You will always have influence from other films, but genre specific is obviously the biggest problem. No horror lover will think "I would like to watch that really great horror movie, but Toy Story 5 came out, so I can't" (exaggeration).

Avatar just had no "competition" in it's biggest draw and that was "looking good". Because it was ahead of its time in that regard.

If you wanna see the insane legs in Germany:

    https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl1983088129/weekend/

The movie still pulled a lot into March and a lot of that were people that wanted to see it again before it left theaters. (I know anecdotal again)

Reaction to the trailer was pretty silent in my screening yesterday btw. I heard one person asking if Avatar will be shown in theaters again and the person besides telling him that this is Avatar 2. Followed by an "oh ok".

I know this was only a teaser and in my original post I said I need to wait for more trailers. But yesterday I was not impressed. I will watch it regardless. A lot will. This will have a big OW surely. But (for now!!) I don't think legs will differ from other movies.

Pretty pictures alone will not get you close to 3 billions, people responded to the story, too.

Back then they did. We went in with friends multiple times just because it looked cool (3D was "new" after all). People still went to see that film after 2-3 months here in Europe.

The story is just Pocahontas in space. If only for story, I would rather watch Pocahontas again than Avatar.

  3. I am surprised about the reception of the trailer here.

I thought it was boring and kinda good looking, but not that much more than the first movie... or is my memory playing tricks here?

Not seeing this doing well. First was carried by European legs, because nothing else was really worth watching and it was an impressive technical feat back then. But story was already meh. What exactly has this one going for it?

If other trailers are not way better, I am calling below $2bn for now.

  4. I liked the movie overall.

I agree that it was a good choice to have the Illuminate take not that much of the runtime.

Wanda, Strange and Chavez were all really good. I mean we knew that for the former 2 already, but Xochi Gomez was a surprise. I bet she will be great in the next movies.

Elizabeth Olsen rocked it a lot. Good last performance I guess. I always liked her and SW is one of my favorite heroes for over 20 years now, so I was really happy when she came in. And I am really sad now :(

But we get Clea, yay :) Also a 3rd eye 😮

    Pro:

    - The 3 mains were great

    - Nice visuals overall and soundtrack was also great

    - Wanda is a great villain here imo

    - Nice cameos that didn't take a lot of time

    Con:

    - Raimi horror is boring to me and his camerawork+editing is just not mine

    - Plot was kinda meh

    - Wanda :(

Will still watch it again though.

I have not seen it, but it' was one film I decided I wanted to be spoiled about.

I suspect that what happens with Wanda will cause a replay of the whole fuss over what happened with Dany in the climax of "Game Of Thrones". A lot of her fans will be upset at her going over to the dark side, despite the fact that Wandavision was very careful to  build that a real possibility. Fans often see just what they want to see.

For me, that Wanda is so conflicted is what makes her such an interesting charecter.

No, Wanda being evil is fine. It's nothing like Dany at all.

Why do you speculate in a spoiler thread though? Kinda useless in here.

So would people who have seen it say its definitely not the same ol same ol cookie cutter MCU for the better?

    Whatever you mean by that...

It's different than other movies. Like pretty much all of P3 anyway.

It's noticably darker, if that's what you meant.

Overall enjoyable movie, I would suggest people to watch it in cinema. But some things missed for me. I was never a big fan of Raimi, I guess that's why. Def not in my top5 MCU movies. Maybe it can crack top10, have to think more about it.

Edit: Also doesn't help that horror in general is one of my most boring genres. I just don't get scared by movies. And light horror is even more boring obviously. Now that will obviously not influence my rating, because I don't let my hate for genres influence that. Just an info why some things might have missed for me, that are otherwise fine.

GA who don't follow reviews still think it's a cameo-fest and arguably Wanda herself is a bigger draw than Strange

    1) Wanda is set up for something happening and DS fucked up in NWH, but it is kinda solved. For now.

    2) It is only a fanbase of some strange YouTuber. So this might not be representative.

    3) It's a short internet poll with just one question. What I mean with that, here are my answers to some questions:

Most interested to see: America Chavez, because I love her

Most interested what happens next: Wanda

Hoping for most screentime: Dr. Strange (and not because it's his movie, he is imo the anchor point of the plot that I expect)

Yes i do think the production of TV shows should slow down a bit to focus a bit more on the movies again because many of these shows are unnecessary, and obviously is my opinion what else should be? We have very different views of what a meltdown is.

But anyway this discussion isn't relevant so anyway, back on topic, 84% with 58 reviews (6.9 average)

    Disagree.
Except for What If? every show either introduced new characters or evolved some more underused characters.

Even FatWS introduced US Agent, Madripoor, the Broker and solidified Falcon's right to be the next Cap. We don't know yet how important all that stuff will be. And that was the weakest show imo and I still think it was important.

I think those additions to flesh out characters will make the movies much better for fans. If they manage to connect them.

  9. So after reading all those, I suspect the people that didn't like Wanda's arc that much were people that have never seen WandaVision.

So my guess is that you don't need to watch it, you will still like the movie, but Wanda's arc may fall a little bit flat. And the people that saw WandaVision like her arc.

If that is the case, I think I am fine with that.

PS I so cannot wait for tomorrow. Reviews got me hyped up. 34 hours to go

@Macleod after hearing that you still wanna test that theory or you gonna watch it before? 😀

    3 rotten reviews so far:

"There's no attempt to hide that the film is pure fan service, a greatest-hits mashup of Spider-Man's cinematic legacy."

"The latest, laboured movie in Tom Holland's up-to-this-point winning iteration of the web-slinger is all about webbing characters through multiverse magic from previous iterations of the franchise to deliver fleeting dopamine hits."

"No Way Home should have focused on making new viewers fall in love with the characters so they want to discover their previous movies. Some poignant moments show what could've been."

    wow... those are really stupid.

As expected I couldn't really sleep much... 10 1/2 hours to go 😳

And I still have to work in between... how am I supposed to do that? 🙄

My final predictions: 230 DOM, 550 global

Doing predictions while being full on drunk on hype may be a bad idea

  11. My list:
    1. ITSV

    2. HC

    3/4/5. TASM/FFH/SM2

    6. SM

    7/8. TASM2/SM3

I have no idea how so many here do not like Andrew's Peter... it was the closest to the comics from all 3, can't fault them for that. I like Tom's more though personally. And Tobey's is just a whiny idiot.

Also Gwen is such a refreshing love interest after that stupid Raimi-MJ... holy shit is she insufferable. She really brings these movies down. Without her SM2 would be solidly at my 3rd spot.

Around 18 hours until my screening... right now I don't feel like I'll be able to sleep... 🙄

The Silmarilion please. It would be so epic.

    Holy crap.

You could split that easily into 40 movies and I think most passages would be fairly interesting on its own if you flesh them out a little bit.

I personally liked the Simarillion (even more than LotR :P ), I would watch every movie about it.

Maybe he was all hologram and used the drones carrying some skin-like feeling device to simulate touch? I'm with you though I don't think it does hold up.

He did land in a pretty strange way btw. It really looked like he can't fly. So I guess he was indeed carried by something in that scene.

I really liked the movie. A lot. The teenager stuff was really good and had a lot of funny stuff. Zendaya and Tom are perfect together imo. Their chemistry is insane.

I actually liked the elemental stuff in the beginning. I mean it was obvious they were fake because Mysterio, but they looked really cool.

And then the 2nd half is great because of Mysterio. It really did pay off, that they waited 10 years for a role for Jake, but he is sooo good. Even better than Keaton in Homecoming imo. And that is surely not an easy task.

Extra thumbs ups for the illusion scene and JK as JJJ :)

Overall my #2 Spidey movie. ITSV still wins, sorry MCU 😉
