  1. If you told me a couple years ago after seeing Jungle Book open to 100m and Beauty and the Beast to 174m that Aladdin is tracking to pull in sub 100m over Memorial Weekend I would’ve laughed. Aladdin has always been a fan favorite amongst people my age (27) and that might be actually one of the things hurting it. Everyone is going in with the notion that Robin Williams genie cannot he matched. It’s definitely one of the more iconic characters that Disney has. That kind of iconic resonance can be a detractor because this remake is already seen as inferior.

I hope I’m wrong and it does well. But we saw Disney pay the price for stretching Star Wars beyond the saturation point with Solo. With Dumbo and now Aladdin, it looks like their live action remakes could be following a similar fate. Lion King will do gangbusters to make up for it though.

We've had a bunch...and if you wanted supers, Captain America is a heckuva 3-quel grower...and if you wanted animated, Toy Story is another heckuva 3-quel grower...

Good examples, I guess you can throw Thor in there as well.

In raw dollars, Toy Story’s growth looks impressive but in terms of actual audience growth it was a slight improvement from film to film ala Lord of the Rings.

I don't see what is wrong with caring about paychecks.

I’m not saying it’s wrong but Keanu Reeves has been known to be very selfless throughout his career which is one of his better traits. He took paycuts to get Al Pacino for Devils Advocate and Gene Hackman for The Replacements. He gave a portion of his paycheck to the stunt men on the Matrix films.

Contrast that to Bruce Willis who turned down Expendables 3 because he was “only” getting 3 million dollars for 4 days work and wanted more.

  4. It’s been pretty clear that Avengers gave us a brief flirtation of challenging TFA but it’s unreal initial fervor came and went and just isn’t enjoying the stabilization we all thought would happen by now. Even with John Wick exceeding expectations, it’s still less than half of Deadpool 2’s opening and we’re still looking at another 50%+ drop. Kudos to the posters who saw this coming because I still thought it had a shot at 900m heading into last weekend.

But I thought about it like this. We all knew it was gonna break records. I’d say the average prediction was right around 300m. Let’s say it hits 300m OW right on the nose, still shatters the OW record and then goes on to make the 840-850m it’s heading to. Would that be viewed in a more positive light? Same result just a different way of getting there. Seeing a movie as well liked as this continue to free fall is frustrating but in hindsight we should’ve seen it coming. The OW was out of this world huge and people that would’ve caught it in the preceding weekends rushed to it and it’s drops reflect that.

  5. Have we ever seen a franchise grow like the way John Wick has? I mean we see a lot of films enjoy the 2nd film bump generated from good will of the original but most peak there and the 3rd usually sees equal or diminished returns. Even though the beginning point was pretty modest, it is still an incredible feat to see a 14m OW balloon to a 55-60m OW in less than 5 years. Couldn’t be more happy for Keanu Reeves and co. A true class act that never cared about stardom and paychecks like most actors do.

I remain unconvinced that Endgame legs will be worse from this point than IW legs. IW had to deal with DP 2. Endgame has no such direct competition for a bit, yet.

If the legs are worse then it will be due to runtime and frontloading effects. We'll see how it goes.

It should stabilize after this. John Wick looks to open around 30-40m, a fraction of Deapool 2’s 125m OW. I think it should play well over memorial weekend and then enjoy some nice late summer legs. I’m holding out hope for 900m.

  7. It’s absolutely crazy how fast TFA caught up to EG. It made a 110m lead evaporate in a week and a half. And this is from a film that averaged over 29m in weekday business its first week and raked in 147m in it’s 2nd weekend.

I still held out a slim chance EG could pass TFA but it just hasn’t stabilized after burning off the initial fervor. This isn’t a knock on EG in the slightest, it’s more of a testament of how truly mind blowing TFA’s performance is.

So since TPM, it appears EG will join TFA as the only films to clear 80m admissions in the past 20 years. That is a truly historic achievement in the age of instant gratification, streaming services, online downloads, countless entertainment options, etc.

EG crosses into the “historic event” mold which doesn’t happen often. This is a run for the ages and I’m gonna enjoy the hell out of it regardless where it ends up.

  8. So Endgame needs a 3.13 post second weekend multiplier to beat TFA. Infinity War managed a 2.96. Endgame has to face Pika this weekend and Alladin in its 5th weekend which is Memorial weekend so offsets that a bit. Infinity War faced a direct comp. in Deadpool 2 in it’s 4th weekend and it put a damper on its late legs.

i think Endgame has the more favorable schedule ahead so I’m not ruling out it giving TFA a good battle.

Us was divisive and got hit hard by Pet Semetary and Curse of La Llorona.

Right but the fact it might not even be able to have a higher total than Get Out when it at one point had a 50m lead on it is a little disappointing. It’s gonna be close.

Glass had very divisive WOM and it still managed a 2.75 multiplier. I think Us just had overwhelming rush-out factor comparable to last years Halloween which also fell hard despite strong reviews and overall positive sentiment.

Disney can't be treated as one entity. The fact is they are a series of sub brands, and each of those is quite different. What the Marvel branch has pulled off is remarkable and has set an amazing and exciting blueprint for the entire blockbuster industry. What the main studio has done with their live action branch by focusing on dull, lifeless remakes of the animated classics is insipid and sets a horrible trend for the industry. They are two completely different sides of the coin, so it's impossible to just say Disney as a whole is one thing to the industry.

I honestly don’t feel the Disney influence in these films. Marvel really feels like it’s own thing. Unfortunately can’t say the same for Star Wars.

Thing is if the other big studios had a chance to do what Disney is doing they would.   Let’s not act like their this beacon of light

Disney/Marvel trusted the process, were extremely patient, and are now reaping the full rewards of a decade long journey that could’ve gone wrong at so many turns. This is the ultimate BO feat of the 21st century.

You had a great chain then, working as an usher at AMC was horrible on any weekend.

Yeah we would usually have all hands on deck for giant openers. Management would typically blackout event weekends like this for time off requests so everyone worked. Like TFA was a breeze because we were so staffed, but earlier that year JW destroyed us. TFA had higher attendance but our staffing was so much better that weekend it didn’t feel busy in comparison.

    Yes! Thank you!

Whether you're the only person in the theatre or it's packed, it's so easy (and morally good) to take it with you why wouldn't you?

Some argue that there's people employed and it's "their job" to do that. It might be so, but they have plenty of other screens to clean and have other jobs to complete as well.

As a former theater employee, I can tell you from experience, feel more sympathy for the concession employees than the ushers cleaning theaters on a busy weekend.

As long as the theater is competent and properly staffed, cleaning packed theaters are pretty easy. Have like 4-5 people with giant trash bags work top to bottom, grabbing big trash items. Then have 1-2 people with a push broom follow them and push trash to the side of the aisles. Have remaining people sweep up piles. Done

Being in concession, you’re on your own and the lines never quit. I’ve always felt more helpless in concessions.

Jedi played in a lot of premium 70mm venues that could go over 1,000 seats for a single screen. (Most of these theaters have been demolished or multiplexed over the years. Mostly demolished.) Even with fewer showtimes, those places could absorb 4,000-6,000 people per day (newspaper ads I can find tend to list 4-6 showtimes).

Also, there was upfront demand but even something like ROTJ had much better legs than today because there was not as much supply, movies spent longer in theaters, etc. It pulled a 6.1x off of its first six days (opening Wed to Memorial Day).

As for Lion King, that played at the El Capitan and Radio City Music Hall. El Capitan seats 1,100, and Radio City seats 6,015.

Wow had no idea about either of those. Jesus Christ! A 6,000 seat theater!
