Speed Racer (2008)

I finished watching Speed Racer at the cinema, walked to my car, opened the door, and -- I shit you not -- fucking RAINBOWS exploded out of the car.

 

Visually, it's unparallelled.

 

But those visuals were so overwhelming that I couldn't get into the emotion of the film until repeat viewings.  I now consider it a five-star film.

 

A modern classic.

Also, The Matrix is ludicrously overrated, Inception is smarter AND more humble about it.

 

Ignoring the fact that a movie can't be "humble", what's so smart about Inception?

 

It's not a dumb movie, but it is a relatively straightforward heist plot with a typically "haunted" noir protagonist whose obsessions become an obstacle -- quite literally, in this case.  And, even then, it's a pretty cumbersome film.

 

The Matrix balanced about 50,000 ideas and made it look easy.

 

There's also the small point about Inception owing its existence to The Matrix.

 

I'm not hating on Inception.  I just got done watching it for the umpteenth time.  But come on.

Inception is very good and more daring in its storytelling than 98% of blockbusters, which I think it sometimes doesn't get enough credit for. But after three viewings, I'm also not sure what's left there for me. I could rewatch The Matrix on loop.
