  1. I remember reading a few years ago that either Casino Royale or QOS (don't remember which) had made back its budget from sponsors and product placement before it even made a dollar in theatres. I don't know if it's true but it makes sense if you consider the character's status as a male role model through the decades. I guess companies especially those who are targeting men theoretically would pay much more to be in a Bond movie than any other tentpole. So if more than half of that 300 mil is payed for before even the movie hits theatres the budget looks reasonable.

The high water mark for product placement in a Bond film (and maybe any movie) was Die Another Day.

A license to shill With 20 marketing partners, Hollywood has never seen product placement like this

"Not only is MGM spending $30 million in advertising, according to Variety, the movie studio enlisted more than 20 marketing partners who are reportedly contributing at least $100 million in promotional support for the franchise.

Only the Olympics can boast more “official” sponsors."

Some of Spectre's promotional partners were listed in the press release that was distributed on the same day as the press event.

SPECTRE, The 24th James Bond Adventure, Set To Begin Production

"Promotional partners returning to the Bond franchise include Aston Martin, Bollinger, Heineken, Jaguar Land Rover, Omega, Sony Electronics, and Sony Mobile."

The Bond films receive direct payment from some companies, like Heineken, and additional promotional support from others, like Aston Martin. Aston Martin doesn't pay to have it's cars featured in the Bond films but will 'gift' or 'donate' cars to the production for on screen use. If the production needs 5 Aston Martins for a complicated chase sequence then they save a couple million dollars by not having to buy the cars.

With promotional support coming from private businesses, the Bond films also receive free marketing from the countries or regions in which filming takes place. This is less obvious than a slickly produced marketing campaign, but television and print news reports bolster a films presence in some key markets. Spectre is already prepping (and maybe shooting) key sequences in Austria. The press in that region have been all over it. Austria is in the heart of Europe and spill over markets for their reporting may be Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, etc. Same thing goes for shooting in Italy. Same idea applies to the two Bond girls as well.

The production will save millions from tax breaks and promotional partners. That could drop the budget from, let's say, $320 Million to $290 Million. Sony and MGM are clearly unsatisfied with that number, though, considering Skyfall's success and what I know of Spectre's ambitious set pieces, I think the budget is well deserved and will be well spent.

  2. That's the one I was referring to and it has the revised act 3.

I'm still super excited for this despite spoilimg myself, for me I'm excited to see how Mendes translates the material.

Set photos from London today: http://www.express.co.uk/news/showbiz/546982/Daniel-Craig-Thames-London-filming-James-Bond-Spectre

    EDIT: dammit Burgess :P

I can't wait for this film. I've seen you on MI6-HQ forums. I posted on the forums years ago under a different name but have been lurking for a while.

  3. Heads up no links - for those wanting to judge everything yourselves...without resorting to biased sites ahem Gawker:

4chan posted an official breakdown of a way more recent revision of the shooting script with improved third act

I haven't read any of the scripts but I have read a scene by scene breakdown of the movie dated sometime in October. Even with some of the scenes missing from the breakdown and no dialogue the film flows pretty well. The scale of this film is huge. The action set pieces are ambitious and intricate.

I love Skyfall and Spectre is a continuation of the relationships and themes explored in that film. Theme and tone are where Craig's Bond films succeed. They have something meaningful to say about Bond and the world he inhabits.

  4. The Star Trek comparision is not the same thing. As for TDK, it was an outlier as well, and we all know the reasons it did what it did, cough cough Joker.

Yeah, it could, but aim not counting on it, and those movies you listed give me no confidence. If you go look at James Bond BO history on BOM, you see what I mean. Now, Im no pyschic, I may very well be wrong, but going by statistics and history, I dont see it.

The same thing could have been said about TDK, but TDKR outgrossed TDK WW. The domestic number decreased, but given the gross of TDK I think that was expected.

If Spectre does earn less domestically than Skyfall I don't think the difference will be huge. Compare Star Trek Into Darkness to Star Trek: $228 million vs $257 million. That's 'only' a difference of $29 million.

  5. I dont get it...where are you guys getting your predictions from? Skyfall was an outlier for the modern Bond series, and almost an outlier for the whole series, yet everyone suddenly thinks Spectre can march that? Thats not my opinion, just look at the chart. Winter 2012 was strong, great reviews, 50th birthday, Olympics coverage, the Adele song, etc. $300M it made, versus the bunch of Bonds that all landed in the $100Ms.

And now we suddenly think Spectre is going to ignore the precedent and automatically shoot for $300M+? I dont get it. It'd be different if this had been playing out gradually, but No, Skyfall just shot up. I dont see it maintaining that domestic or worldwide. Will it fall back to Casino Royale numbers? Nah, somewhere around $250M, maybe a little less, but I see no reason for this automatically match Skyfall. James Bond didnt just double his fanbase overnight.

When predicting a franchise, you have to go back and look at all their movies and the tangibles they had, not just the last one. WW should be set for $1b, but I dont see how this is a lock for anything north of $300M (or anything right under that) at all.

Star Trek (2009) made $257 million domestic and $385 million WW.

Star Trek: Nemesis made $43 million domestic and $67 million WW.

Batman Begins made $206 million domestic and $374 million WW.

The Dark Knight made $534 million domestic and $1 billion WW.

Spectre may not hit $300+ million, but it could. It really could.

  6. This will be the biggest Bond ever. $1.5 billion worldwide.

I believe that Spectre will outgross Skyfall. I'm saying 1.3 Billion. If Skyfall was Bond's The Dark Knight or Avengers, then Spectre will be The Dark Knight Rises or Iron Man 3. We could see a small increase or large increase, but there will be an increase.
