I suppose the studios were already going to get purchased one way or another. If anything I'm glad that Disney got Fox over Comcast.

That seems to be the cycle that we are in, and it isn't a new cycle when it come to the studios. If anyone cares about the history of film and the purchasing of studios, they can go here:

For the record, it isn't my website. It's owned by AMC (American Movie Classics). But, it is a great history of the whole film industry, including the major studios and all of various rounds of studios being bought that has occurred historically.

Hell surprisingly I haven't seen the Internet bring up that Feige and Ike will fight about which properties the movies will get and which the TV division will get.

That won't be an issue. The major characters will go to the movie studio. Some of the lesser known mutants will wind up at the TV division.

You think we ever will see the day Disney buys out WB....or the other way around?

I honestly don't. AT&T will probably end up purchasing WB in the end, and I don't see AT&T going anywhere. I think that with the Fox purchase, Disney will be big enough that they don't have to worry about AT&T (or another large tech company) buying them. I think Disney, WB and Universal will all remain separate major studios.

So, if the deal ends up happening...Does that mean Dark Phoenix will be the end of Fox universe?

Or are they waiting some years until Marvel finally figures out how to include X-Men on their universe? I mean, is the Gambit movie happening at all ? What about Multiple Man, with James Franco?

    I'm just curious.

It probably will be. There is no reason to continue it, aside from Deadpool. The old cast is gone and the new cast hasn't set the box office on fire. There is no reason to continue it when Kevin Feige can capably handle it.

TimeWarner already spun off Time Inc which left the more profitable media arm which was HBO, Turner and Warner Bros. HBO alone is worth a lot to AT&T as well as the Turner cable networks.

I could see CBS merging with Viacom again, the split ironically made CBS more profitable than Viacom. If CNN is sold off, I could see CBS making a play, they've been interested for years,

I am actually surprised Warner Bros. went the route that they did. They have such a huge film library with their own library, the New Line Cinema library, MGM's pre-1985 library, the RKO library, and the Hanna-Barbera library. They were in position to go head to head with Netflix and Amazon. AT&T will have no trouble competing with Netflix or Amazon with that huge film library. Ted Turner was ahead of the curve in acquiring content.

Viacom and CBS merging and purchasing CNN makes a lot of sense. If that move happens, Viacom gets stronger and the AT&T/Time Warner merger would probably be approved.

Usually this type of buyout happens when an industry becomes a mature market and stop (fast) growing. But in USA it already has been a mature market for a long time, so I think this buyout has something to do with the fear of the rise of internet-based companies such as Netflix and Amazon. These are not just new comers. They are game-changers and they are shaping this industry. It's also one of the key factors to the AT&T/Time Warner deal and the whole "net neutrality" business.

This is pretty much the thing that is affecting Hollywood as a whole. The industry is changing and the studios need to decide how to adapt. Disney's approach seems to be to go head to head with Netflix and Amazon. Comcast was ahead of the curve by buying Universal and then DWA. Warner Bros. solution was to be purchased by AT&T.

However to be honest Fox was looking to sell anyway. Odds are if Disney didn’t grab it someone else would.

I think Disney approached Fox initially. But Fox leaked the talks to try to get the best offer because they did want to sell. Comcast, Verizon, and Sony (for some weird reason) were the reported interested parties. Fox liked the fit with Disney the best. Comcast seemed the most likely buyer after Disney.

  8. If this deal happens, this is such a great move by Disney. They get a huge influx of content for their streaming service. Fox has a massive film library. Disney also gets the distribution rights to Star Wars Episode IV. They get the film rights to the FF and X-Men. They get the Avatar franchise, which they are already heavily invested in with Avatar Land in Walt Disney World. This gives them a closer working relationship with James Cameron.

The deal also gives Disney a few valuable cable networks. It also gives them ownership of a bunch of regional sports networks, which is an area Fox has been a leader in and Disney isn't even a player in. The content from those regional sports networks could help ESPN.

The most important thing is that it makes Disney too big for another company to purchase. From a business perspective, this would be a huge win for Disney.

Wasn't there talk a while back about Disney buying Netflix? Its obviously not going to happen now, but was there anything to it, or was it just an unfounded rumor?

It was a rumor. I am not sure how much truth there was to it, but I imagine Disney thought about it. They decided to create their own streaming service instead. That's when they realized they needed more content and looked into purchasing Fox. I think buying Fox is a smarter move than buying Netflix.

And there would be massive Disney Stockholder resistence to a Murdoch taking over.

As I said, that Guardian article does not offer much proof that Murdoch is being seriously considered. And given that the Guardian basically hates the Murdochs guts and see them as the Boogey Man.

I seriously doubt he is being considered as well. Iger keeps announcing dates when he will be stepping down and then keeps getting extensions. Disney isn't buying Fox to get its next CEO.

If we're talking stench there's hardly a bigger one than being attached to the name Murdoch.

But a lot of that has to do with peoples' political leanings. Staggs and Rasulo had a stench from their vision (or lack thereof) for the company as a whole and from being part of the old Eisner regime. Disney clearly needs to move in a different direction to compete. Murdoch doesn't have those short-comings and would bring a new perspective to the company. He could have other short-comings, but I haven't heard of any, except that his last name is Murdoch, which again goes back to political leanings.

Lionsgate and MGM as well. However I can see Sony trying to buy MGM to stay afloat.

MGM's pre-1985 back catalogue is owned by WB, so MGM's value is basically its 1985-present movie catalogue, the United Artists back catalogue, the Orion Pictures back catalogue, and the James Bond franchise. There is definitely some value there, but I am not sure Sony would want to buy it.

I think MGM is a better fit for Lionsgate.

Paramount and Sony will be the next to be swallowed up.

To be honest, I always thought Disney would end up buying Sony Pictures because they seemed to be the weakest studio among the big 6, and it would get Disney the Spider-Man film rights completely. And I read rumors 2 years ago that Sony would be selling Columbia Pictures, but nothing ever came of it.

I read an article a few days ago, which was written on or about November 11, where the author said that the talks would end up resuming. He also said that before the news of the Fox talks came out, he had expected Disney to buy Sony or Paramount because they were the studios that were doing the worst right now. He was surprised that Disney aimed so high with Fox. It is an interesting situation because only a few years ago, Fox tried to buy WB, and now Fox is close to being bought themselves.

I do agree with you that Sony will be next. Sony Pictures is so different from the rest of Sony Corporation's businesses. Matsushita sold Universal Studios over a decade ago. Paramount I am 50/50 on because I don't know if Sumner Redstone wants to get out of the movie business or not.

This is going suck if Disney buys Fox. I guess Universal and WB should but Columbia and Paramount.  Disney could buy Loinsgate.

Comcast already bought Universal. That was the first move in the new round of Hollywood take-overs. AT&T is trying to buy WB. Disney itself was rumored to be taken over by Apple or Verizon. Disney buying Fox is to actually prevent another company from taking them over.

I would expect any combination of Netflix, Amazon, Apple and Verizon to make a play for any combination of Sony Pictures, Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM.
