  1. No way do I think it was headed for that large of a drop off, but to each their own.I certainly think it is now, though...
  2. Sorry, I thought you were arguing that TDKR was bound to follow the same fate as BR regardless of the shooting or not. Or are you?
  3. BR = $45 mil; B = $40 mil three years prior. I wouldn't call that handily. And the reviews for Batman were good - not great. Certainly not the universal acclaim of TDK.
  4. Difference was Batman was not nearly as well received as TDK nor was Batman Returns compared to TDKR. BR lacked the good-will going into it.
  5. It received major backlash while the east coast was being held hostage by the sniper shooters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beltway_sniper_attacks). Somewhere in the movie the serial killer refers to himself as God, which one of the shooters also called himself in one of his cryptic notes to authorities. The media was speculating that he was inspired by the film. The movie opened to $37 million but then only grossed $93 million ultimately.
  6. I think you touch on a point that hasn't been addressed too much: while yes, some people will skip TDKR because it is the movie associated with the tragedy, and yes, some people are going to be skipping movie theaters in general for awhile, there are also those who don't want to watch a violent movie of any kind right now. Does anyone remember the Red Dragon debacle in 2002? Similar situation.
  7. For my part, I will have seen TDKR three times before the weekend is over, and want to see it two more times before it is out of theaters. There, I make up for four people who decided to stay home.
  8. Olympics were just as much of a factor - if not more - in 2008 as the country watched with bated breath to see if Michael Phelps would make history.
  9. I truly believe that the shooting tragedy has greatly decreased the appeal of seeing this movie for casual movie-goers, not just for this weekend but for its overall run. And I've been saying that since early Friday morning, before any numbers had come in.
  10. Both are so gorgeous and effective, but I'd like y'alls opinion. Batman Returns: The Dark Knight Rises: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfFNT97Lhyo
  11. Also, I was so pissed that I read reviews before seeing the movie, despite several critics outright saying they didn't feel bad revealing certain spoilers because they were so minor in comparison to others. Boy they were right.
  12. Yes, except for hers. "Mind If I Cut In?" = ingenious!
  13. Paradoxically, the of lack of screen time added to her overall presence.
  14. Could the problem also be that people just assume that theaters are going to have extra security and just don't want to deal with the inconvenience? Going to a movie can already be somewhat of an ordeal, especially for families.
  15. Agreed! I was beyond shocked because Hathaway's take looked mediocre at best in the trailers. I love how strong her presence was with such little screen time. Throughout the movie I was just itching for her to come back, which, according to Nolan, was what he was aiming for.
  16. Idk...we may have a Chamber of Secrets on our hands with Catching Fire.
  17. International numbers just don't impress like they used to, though, with the explosion of the foreign market. Look at the increase between POTC 3 and 4, for example.
  18. Locally I did see a decrease in ticket prices during the height of the recession and an increase in matinee/"deal day" specials.
  19. Maybe they should start paying more than minimum wage...
  20. And to think some on this forum were arguing early Friday morning that this story would blow over within 24 hours and wouldn't affect the weekend box office. I knew that wouldn't be the case though.
  21. I think it'd actually earn them more money in the long run...
