  1. DS2 - coming off a $232m first movie in 2016, big moments in IW and EG, promise of epic-ness, expectation of many guest stars.
TLT - coming off $315m third movie in 2017, big moments in IW and EG, promise of epicness?, expectation of GOTG guest spot.
Some of that is a wash. I agree that DS2’s “madness” did not jackpot things like I had hoped. If Thor does the story it seems they are doing, it should hit the adventure with feels and humor sweet spot.
My hopeful thinking is that GA will connect to this more than it did to Strange (which I liked a lot).

  2. I pretty deep into Marvel stan-hood so I’m the guy who was disappointed when Ms. Marvel got bumped from last fall to next month. I do worry that storylines are getting hotshotted.
Couldn’t NWH have been about Peter running from Kraven or Scorpion or Hobgoblin?

Couldn’t DS2 have followed some other threads instead of jumping into multiverse?

They have a golden goose. I’ll take big amounts of content, but Spidey in space more than fighting gangsters in New York is not my choice.

The numbers are great but lol at the people going “it’s amazing how it’s doing for a Doctor Strange movie”. Lol this is not just a “Doctor Strange sequel”. Strange’s profile was heavily raised by appearing in the Infinity War movies and NWH and they attached the trailer for this to NWH and heavily hyped it up as the next chapter in the multiverse saga

LOL to anyone who can find something like that quote.
It clearly had those advantages and more than doubled previous OW. You want to ignore other data.
What was it supposed to make to not be a disappointment?

  4. I try to be a rational MCU stan. I am greedy for the huge numbers, but I care more about the quality.
I think we shouldn’t forget how covid was a big wrench in the scheduling and production of many projects.* Maybe that is getting better with AM3 and GOTG3 having completed production in good time.
If MCU horribly collapses so that Nova 2 in 2029 or whatever is the no. 22 movie domestically, that’s ok.

    * - yes, movie production is not important in the face of illness and death

  5. I’m a liberal who really liked the first Top Gun. I agree that TGM could have big appeal to “middle America” or the American Sniper crowd.
I do wonder if people saw or remember the first movie. It was overtly pro-military, but oddly avoided overt politics. They rescue a ship against anonymous foes at the end. YMMV on whether that’s stupid or deft.
    It grossed well internationally.
These are action movies, but any propaganda points are pickles that you can take off your sandwich.

What should have been a dreamy April for theaters has turned into a nightmare, and I think FB3 and Morbius would have performed like this no matter what. It is just that now it matters much more than in a normal marketplace.

Is that start an eerie homage to Stu Nahan getting super worried on the call of Creed-Drago when Apollo is face down in the ring?
