Lot of run up for Volume 3 with TLT, I Am Groot and Holiday Special.
-
DS2 - coming off a $232m first movie in 2016, big moments in IW and EG, promise of epic-ness, expectation of many guest stars.
TLT - coming off $315m third movie in 2017, big moments in IW and EG, promise of epicness?, expectation of GOTG guest spot.
Some of that is a wash. I agree that DS2’s “madness” did not jackpot things like I had hoped. If Thor does the story it seems they are doing, it should hit the adventure with feels and humor sweet spot.
My hopeful thinking is that GA will connect to this more than it did to Strange (which I liked a lot). -

Is there a reason why the actuals have consistently been higher than the estimates for Strange?
Alternate parts of multiverse

Good grief. How many people are holding onto lottery tickets that pay off if DS2 goes under $400m domestically?
-
Maybe if they were Twenty One Aviators.

It was fuzzy. But I appreciate your answer. I didn’t follow tracking on BP. It seemed like that was one that just kept moving it’s ceiling up.
Not comparing this movie’s future to BP. Just remembering or misremembering BP’s expectations. -
What are the non-insane but things-go-really-right numbers?
-
This movie feels like 170-180 OW.
Always greedy for absurdly high totals, but big summer adventure, GOTG appearance, possible better reviews… that seems to put it in that in realistic territory.
Some disappointment for me… 160/360.
Solid… 170/400Cool that… 180/440
Valhalla… 200/500

False. I’m meticulously watching the OW multi go from 1.8 to 1.9.

Wellll..
400/185 is 2.16. That’s like FB3 response. Seems 400 is very available.

The dick move for Marvel would be to put out a really good Squadron Supreme movie.

I pretty deep into Marvel stan-hood so I’m the guy who was disappointed when Ms. Marvel got bumped from last fall to next month. I do worry that storylines are getting hotshotted.
Couldn’t NWH have been about Peter running from Kraven or Scorpion or Hobgoblin?Couldn’t DS2 have followed some other threads instead of jumping into multiverse?
They have a golden goose. I’ll take big amounts of content, but Spidey in space more than fighting gangsters in New York is not my choice.

Thor 4 OW…
Do people who were disappointed by MoM quality (not me) or people who thought it was not as good for littles (me) get excited for a rollicking Thor adventure or are they circumspect?

The numbers are great but lol at the people going “it’s amazing how it’s doing for a Doctor Strange movie”. Lol this is not just a “Doctor Strange sequel”. Strange’s profile was heavily raised by appearing in the Infinity War movies and NWH and they attached the trailer for this to NWH and heavily hyped it up as the next chapter in the multiverse saga
LOL to anyone who can find something like that quote.
It clearly had those advantages and more than doubled previous OW. You want to ignore other data.
What was it supposed to make to not be a disappointment? -
I try to be a rational MCU stan. I am greedy for the huge numbers, but I care more about the quality.
I think we shouldn’t forget how covid was a big wrench in the scheduling and production of many projects.* Maybe that is getting better with AM3 and GOTG3 having completed production in good time.
If MCU horribly collapses so that Nova 2 in 2029 or whatever is the no. 22 movie domestically, that’s ok.
* - yes, movie production is not important in the face of illness and death
-
A sequel to a movie that went 85/232 domestic is going to open to 190-200 domestic.
This is cause for concern about the weakening of the overall MCU franchise?
What possible OW could DS2 had to not contribute to doomsaying?Good grief.

I’m a liberal who really liked the first Top Gun. I agree that TGM could have big appeal to “middle America” or the American Sniper crowd.
I do wonder if people saw or remember the first movie. It was overtly pro-military, but oddly avoided overt politics. They rescue a ship against anonymous foes at the end. YMMV on whether that’s stupid or deft.
It grossed well internationally.
These are action movies, but any propaganda points are pickles that you can take off your sandwich. -
Yeah, but it grew into Hawkeye and FATWS critiques.
-
The skeptics of the MCU “formula” don’t like the genre.
The “formula” is action movie with some humor… which is a good formula!-

As an old, I thought it was funny when the youngs thought old dads would think Ford vs. Ferrari was the primo stuff
Top Gun 2 is actually it.
Blue Magic. Blue Sky. Mr. Brownstone.

Lost City over FB3 domestic is how likely?

What should have been a dreamy April for theaters has turned into a nightmare, and I think FB3 and Morbius would have performed like this no matter what. It is just that now it matters much more than in a normal marketplace.
Is that start an eerie homage to Stu Nahan getting super worried on the call of Creed-Drago when Apollo is face down in the ring?
-
Morbius passes 1.7 multiplier.
1.8 this weekend!* - not really

My criticism of the racial politics of FATWS is that they watered it down to placate right-wingers.
The quality suffered because it was muted for people who were terrified that something as real as the Tuskegee experiments was alluded to.
