Yup, it's very tedious. It's impossible to have a discussion on here about marvel shifting down a gear without the strawmen coming out.

It feels like a lot of trolling though. If someone has negative to… mixed? feelings about the quality of Marvel movies, why are they making a bunch of posts in the Thor thread?

I can’t imagine going into a thread of movies I didn’t like or was disinterested in and make a bunch of posts about gosh-looks-like-trouble.

Marvel is like Hydra. If they kill one franchise, another three will take its place.

Star Wars is different animal. When TLJ fumbled the ball the entire thing was compromised.

Even with Avengers, a major crossover event, a subpar movie like AOU didn't kill the momentum too much.

I totally heard that in Red Skull voice.

  3. Saw it. Liked it.
B for me. Had so many elements that could’ve made it an A, but soooo jokey.

I like the actors a lot. Spectacular visuals.
Ragnarok was epic adventure with excellent humor. This was so indulgent on the humor it undercut some of the powerful elements.
Taika is funny and he can do drama. This was indulgent. I went in so ready to not feel that way, but darn.

  4. The Pixar comparisons are apt.
The ongoing debate about whether DS2 was a big hit that rose dramatically from its predecessor or it was a con job that left a lot of money on the table because it was haphazard shows this.
I thought Up was better than Wall E, that Brave was excellent and Inside Out is an A plus. But look at many of the reviews. They are almost obsessive about whether those films match the previous standard. It’s kind of miserable to read. Obviously, it’s valid to compare a movie to similar ones, but it’s like one of the worst aspects of sports fandom. We can’t enjoy a shooting guard’s career now because Kobe Bryant would’ve made him cry or some bullshit.

I guess my question is - is there gonna be like, more Avengers movies? Because even though I don't love what the MCU has done to movies, the "few films in a phase leading to big team up" was quite the business strategy! They should get back to doing that if they want to recapture the glory days. Now it just seems like random cameos in solo movies with no Avengers anymore.

It seems like yes and no.
More Avengers movies with a main team, but also variations like Young Avengers or Dark Avengers/Thunderbolts.
Some of that could be D+

The problem with the MCU as a relative non-fan who still sees all of them, is that they no longer seem to be building to anything. They are content for content's sake without purpose - not building to something coherent, but not allowed to be free enough to truly break out of the box, either. Thanos cameos may have been annoying at the time but they gave this entire franchise an ethos. A point to build towards. What happens once you literally get past the "Endgame"? Anything else was bound to be anticlimatic outside of the No Way Home stuff (and when they eventually bring in Hugh Jackman and Deadpool, tbh)

    That’s understandable.
As a consumer who once read 20 comic books a month, the genre does have a riddle. How do you top Thanos? With Galactus, Korvac, the Beyonder, etc.

It’s the same problem as wrestling. Why do I care about a certain PPV if I know the belt isn’t getting dropped.
Feige did say the big plot thread is about to be more clear.

  7. Um, DS2 just made 410/950. T4 will do very, very well.
Disagreements about quality are obviously valid. The idea that a drop in quality has shown in the marketplace seems pretty evidence-free.
I’ve read that DS2 was a disappointment financially. Maybe a little. But is the argument that the sequel to a $232m movie should have made more than $410m-ish because of cameos/hype? If that argument is correct, that sounds like a pretty robust franchise.
