  1. Michael Keaton- BirdmanWhoever goes lead- FoxcatcherBenedict Cumberbatch- The Imitation GameDavid Oyelowo- SelmaTimothy Spall- Mr. TurnerTimothy Spall is in a shaky position, however. I have him ahead of Phoenix only because of the rumours surrounding the tone of Inherent Vice. I'll probably soon change my mind. Jack O'Connell can get a newcomer nod only if Unbroken becomes the frontrunner. The lack of reviews for Get On Up had me worried, but they're finally out and they seem good at least for the lead (more mixed on the film). So Chadwick Boseman is also a possibility.

  2. Marvel's biggest Box Office draws 1. RDJ2 Scarlett Johansson3. Hemsworth ?? Hemsworth should be #3 but his last non-Marvel wide release Rush lost money for the financiers so his drawing power is questionable.

Rush lost money? $90m on a $38m budget doesn't seem too bad, especially for an Oscar film. Jeremy Renner has a much more successful non-Marvel career than Hemsworth (American Hustle, Hansel and Gretel, Bourne, MI, The Town), though I wouldn't say he's the main selling point of these movies.

  3. It should make around $550 million.  Based on the numbers above, it added $33 million overseas over the past week, and still has China, Spain, Italy, and maybe Japan to come.

The first one, however, wasn't very huge in the markets left:Italy $7,505,879Japan $5,540,461Spain $12,458,930Total $25,505,270I think the sequel will increase at least in Spain and Italy, and with holdovers it should easily go past $500m. But I think it needs a breakout in China to get to $550m.

  4. And in the cases of the family stuff, I wonder if Hercules overperformed among the kid/family quadrant. I saw a good amount of kids at my theater, they couldn't all be going to see Planes/Dragon/Echo/Maleficent if all of them dropped (unless my theater is not representative of nationwide performance this weekend).

Nice thoughts. The Rock actually looks like the kind of person children would see an an idol. And he's already done family films (Tooth Fairy, Journey 2 The Mysterious Island) so he may have built a fanbase there.

  5. That is just insane. Can anyone explain to me again why Japanese girls love Frozen that much? What this movie has that set it far above the other movies in their eyes? I just don't get it at all. I know the movie is girly and cute and all but this level of adoration is just beyond normal. Or do I have to be a girly girl to understand it?

Do you realise that it's ridiculous at this point to claim that girls are the only audience? The movie clearly reached a far wider demographic.

  6. At least try not to fall to lazy, racist arguments.

I hope this does not refer (also) to my post. A historically accurate depiction of people of colour in Denmark in the times Frozen is set (same time as the composition of the tale,19th century, judging from the dresses used) would have entailed characters in lowly and degrading roles. Even if we include Sami among people of colour (I seem to understand that in English, unlike my language, "people of colour" means non-white rather than black) the argument would still hold. Sami were being exhibited in human zoos in Scandinavia in the nineteenth century.Of course, if we do not cling to historical accuracy (given the fantastical elements), then that's a completely different story.Edit: Back to topic, the character designs are wonderful.

  7. I have read the article in the link and it has confirmed what I suspected. There probably were people of colour in Denmark at the time, yet they would have been servants, decorations, toys or objects of wonder, especially in the context of a royal palace. A good representation is given in the recent Danish film "A Royal Affair". If people of colour had to be accurately incorporated in Frozen, it would have to be in very demeaning positions. I'm not sure whether this would have been welcomed by the public as a positive step.
