  1. because Transformers isn't pretending to be something deeper than it is. Everyone involved with Maleficent is all "we're trying to give a deep re-imagining of the classic villain" when in actuality, the movie means nothing and is mindnumbing. Transformers is just as mindnumbing, but you don't see Michael Bay saying in interviews that it's gonna be a deep movie with tons of intriguing themes

Were people involved genuinely saying a "deep" re-imagining? They said re-imagining, for sure, but "deep"? I know Jolie spoke about a rape metaphor but this is more linked with her non-film activities (chairing the conference on rape etc.) than with the marketing for Maleficent. And even if they were, were people here believing that and expecting it to be a "deep" movie? This was essentially always going to be in the vein of Alice and Oz, neither of which is regarded as a "deep" movie. It is directed by a production designer and so visuals were always likely to be the (only) strong point. It is moreover aimed at small children. And is the hatred towards Maleficent genuinely driven by a disappointment over lack of "depth"? Are people here going to the cinema and coming back claiming "oh dear, why was there no high-level philosophical discussion in there"?

  2. Find a non-comedy example. Then we can talk :)

Transformers (or does that count as an unintentional comedy?) is my example. A movie currently boasting a RT score which is almost a third of Maleficent's and yet, being targeted at young males, apparently being spared the level of virulent hatred Maleficent gets. I'm not saying it does not get any hatred, but some members seem to be of the "who-cares-about-the-rest-as-long-as-the-explosions-are-good" persuasion, while Maleficent gets called an abomination. Why are they turning a blind eye for Transformers but not for Maleficent? Even better, why can't they understand that others (say, its target audience) may be turning a blind eye for Maleficent?

  3. you seem to be unable to understand.

Sorry but this forces me to reply. The lack of posts derives from the fact that there was no information on the movie. It's not a big franchise with constant rumours pushing the thread on across hundreds of pages. When the trailer for HB2 was released, many people claimed they enjoyed the first movie, which is an example of leniency towards a movie with pretty much the same negative critical reception as Maleficent (at least as recorded by Metacritic) from a group of individuals which may be regarded as part of the target audience of the former but not the latter. Again, we never talked about numbers.
  4. With $15,488,531 Maleficent passes X-Men and becomes the third highest grossing summer blockbuster of the year so far in Germany. It should soon beat Amazing Spider-Man. This week it outgrosses both Oz ($15,222,137) and Snow White and the Huntsman ($15,084,870).

  5. Dang, that sucks. But as far as countries whose weekend totals were reported, Australia and Brazil held from the earlier estimates, and France INCREASED a little bit, so other than Mexico dropping from estimates, I wonder what territories lost it $3.5m.(Or did someone at Fox put UK preview grosses into the original reported total, then change their mind and take them out so they could be held over to beef up next weekend's wide UK opening number? Eh, probably not...)

It had 14 new territories this week, according to Deadline. It may be a little bit from some or all of them.
  6. While Incredibles is not as popular as Finding Nemo, I just think it will be easier for Pixar to create a quality Incredibles 2 than a Finding Dory, I mean, Incredibles seems to be built as a franchise, like Toy Story and Monsters Inc. In Finding Dory, it just seems to have a the same storyline as Finding Nemo, though this time it is Dory that is lost.

I agree. Incredibles 2 feels more "natural".
