78,366 admissions were sold last weekend across Greece. Numbers not seen since February 2020. What came as an even bigger surprise was the second-place finish of 'Black Widow'. Although it beat 'F9' for the year's biggest live-action opening so far, it failed to beat Pixar's 'Luca', which got a screen boost in its sophomore frame leading to a bigger weekend than its opening. Despite opening lower than 'Tenet', 'Luca' scored a bigger second weekend – the biggest second weekend since March 2020. The Pixar flick is now the biggest 2021 film so far (beating 'F9') and, the way things are going, crossing the 100K-admission milestone has become a lot more likely. 'Black Widow' had the third-lowest opening for an MCU film, only ahead of the two 'Ant Man' films (18,674 admissions for the first one, 18,970 for the second one). Based on the historical record, 'BW' should barely scrape past 50K admissions and will be vying to outgross 'F9', which is currently sitting at 54.6K admissions. Back to the weekend's chart, 'The Father' came in a close third from almost only a quarter of 'Black Widow's' screens. 'Druk' and 'Digger' were the only other holdovers that didn't drop more than 50%. Sequels 'Conjuring 3', 'F9' and 'Croods 2' got obliterated by the loss of screens.

Next weekend sees the release of Liam Neeson's 'The Marksman', animated 'Space Jam: A New Legacy' and action horror film 'The Forever Purge'. Will it be enough to topple the Disney's domination at the top of the charts?

Cumulative admissions for the public holiday weekend reached 49,972 (up to Sunday) and 58,116 (including Monday). The tenth addition to the 'Fast & Furious' series scored the smallest opening of the series – a hard pill to swallow. That being said, we don't have any numbers for the first film, although I doubt it would have earned less than 'F9'. In order to avoid the shame of being the lowest-grossing 'Fast & Furious film', it needs to surpass 'Tokyo Drift's' 115.4K-admission tally. As you may have guessed, this is no easy feat. All odds are stacked against it.

In other news, 'Croods 2' doubled its screens and more than doubled its admissions. It's still miles away though from reaching a respectable tally. 'Cruella' on the other hand has fared relatively worse, probably because it is not the most family-friendly Disney live action fantasy film. 'Digger', a new Greek drama film achieved a 695-admission per-screen average. This would have been a successful number even during normal times, let alone after the virus's arrival.

This weekend saw 45,556 admissions sold across Greece, an encouraging number, but still nowehere near normal, even for the summer, which is classically the quiet season for Greek cinemas. 'F9' held relatively well, but with multiplexes still closed, its chances of reaching the 100K-admission milestone are very non-existent. 'Monday' managed to draw attention thanks to its being a Hollywood production filmed in Greece. Despite last weekend being a holiday weekend, this weekend saw several increases: 'Croods 2', 'Soul' and 'Raya', the latter of which has re-joined the Top 10, all saw small boosts. The DreamWorks sequel has so far been the winner of the season among animated films. Greek film 'Digger' also increased and managed to maintain a strong 626-admission per-screen average.

Indoor cinemas have finally re-opened and the difference is measurable. This weekend, the first of the second half of the year, recorded 64,199 admissions, the most a weekend has ever recorded since that virus of unknown origin entered our lives. Pixar's 'Luca' was the major driver behind this as it recorded the biggest opening of the year so far. It scored far more than the openings of 'Soul' (4,080 admissions) and 'Onward' (9,042 admissions) and it was on par with 'Monsters University' (19,138 admissions) and 'Brave' (21,040 admissions). Its opening was also bigger than 'Coco' (16,667 admissions), but the latter capitalised on the Christmas holidays to achieve an 8.25x multiplier (137K admissions). 'Luca' will be lucky to reach 100K admissions.

Danish–Dutch–Swedish co-production 'Druk' (which means 'binge-drinking') outperformed 'The Conjuring 3' despite opening on a third of the screens. This was also the first weekend in a long time with more than one opener above 10K admissions. Depressing yet encouraging at the same time...

Despite the opening of indoor cinemas, last weekend's Top 3 all got crippled. 'Croods 2' had to deal with stiff competition from Pixar's new outing, while 'Monday' and 'F9' had to deal with the one-two punch of 'Druk' and the 'Conjuring' threequel. Greek film 'Digger' continues to make (small) waves and will soon cross 10K admissions.

This coming weekend sees the arrival of another Disney-distributed film, Marvel's 'Black Widow'. Expect it to reach even higher heights than what we've seen so far...

  3. Greek cinemas are back in business! Admittedly, I'm a bit late with my reporting. Cinemas have been open since Friday, May 22, but I have been extremely busy as of late and haven't had time to catch up. Plus, the first few weekends were quite boring, since not much was happening. Seven weekends have come and passed since then and I will split the reporting into two: the first four and then the last three will be available in my next post – hopefully, if not today, at some point over the weekend, so that next week I  can resume my weekly posts. Let's go!

Plase note that this was a three-day weekend, instead of the usual four-day weekend, since cinemas first opened on a Friday. Furthermore, only outdoor cinemas have been given permission to open. Multiplexes remain shut until further notice. This may explain some of the numbers we'll be seeing. Total admissions reached 16,930, which is better than last year's first post-lockdown weekend (12,070). A trio of not unusual options dominated the top of the charts: an American drama film, an animated film and a Greek film. None of them of course performed especially well, but nothing more was expected anyway. 'Soul' scored the worst Pixar opening ever – even lower than 'Onward's' 9,042-admission opening from March 2020.

Total admissions for the weekend reached 25,963 – numbers not seen since last September. Last weekend's top three all saw a screen expansion, but not all of them capitalised on it equally. 'Nomadland' remained in first place and almost managed to reach 10K admissions this weekend, while 'Soul' saw the biggest % increase of the Top 10 and has now almost achieved a 3x mulitplier. The fact that this film has been available on Disney+ since last December of course doesn't make things easier. 'Amercement' did not drop too hard, but hasn't really achieved a noteworthy performence either. No new films were of note.

The weekend's total admissions amounted to 42,752 as we are seeing a slow but steady increase in box office traffic. The long-delayed 'Croods 2' opened with a third of its predecessor's opening weekend admissions, which had scored 21,987 admissions back in April 2013. 'Croods 2' notably achieved a better opening than Pixar's recent film 'Soul', which dropped hard but its third weekend is actually on par with its opening weekend. 'Croods 2' was not however the lowest opening for a DreamWorks animated film. These are the lowest five:

    DreamWorks Animation (since 2003)
Title Opening weekend Release date Total admissions Multiplier
    Turbo 7,681 Thu 18 Jul 13 42,935 5.59

    Rise of the Guardians 4,485 Thu 29 Nov 12 24,065 5.37

**Opened on Easter weekend, during which most cinemas are closed.

'Cruella' scored the worst opening as of yet for a Disney fantasy live-action film. It even fared worse than 'Saving Mr. Banks' (5,998-admission opening in January 2014). 'Quiet Place 2' did not do far worse than its predecessor, which opened with 7,989 admissions in April 2018. That being said, it was an Easter weekend back then and the film actually increased on its second weekend – a fate not expected for its sequel. As a result, the original's 73,791-admission lifetime tally is completely out of reach for the sequel. Last week's #1 film, 'Nomadland' fell a steep 48%, but has achieved a sizeable 34K admisisons. Could it reach 50K admissions? Interestingly, two new Greek films have joined the mix, althouth they've failed to make any ripples.

Only outdoor cinemas are allowed to be open, thus the rainy weekend crippled box office admissions to 23,188 (a 46% drop). The competition for the limited number of screens has resulted in a bloodbath. It is probably the first time ever that the difference between the highest and lowest screen count in the Top 10 is only 12. In an unexpected turn of events, 'Cruella' managed to scrape past 'Croods 2' for first place. Both of them just about surpassed the 10K-admission milestone. In the meantime, the all-time classic animated franchise 'Tom & Jerry' scored a win against Disney's latest princess 'Raya', although both of them were pretty disappointing. The latter scored the worst opening for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film, with the exception –maybe– of 'Winnie the Pooh', which opened on Easter Weekend 2011 (its opening-weekend tally is unknown). With 'Nomadland' also dropping precipitously, the Top 5 were all within 800 admissions of each other.

    Stay tuned for more...

  4. Here is the long overdue list of biggest films in 2020.

    2020
    Rank Title Admissions
    1 1917 260,434
    2 Χαλβάη 5-0 (Halwaii 5-0) [GR] 223,962

    8 The Gentlemen 61,655
    9 After We Collided 56,098
10 El robo del siglo [Argentinian] 51,996

The top three films were all released prior to the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The most successful film of the pandemic period so far has been 'Tenet' with 109K admissions.

Total admissions in Greek cinemas during 2020 fell by a whopping 67.3% to 3.1 million, compared to 9.6 million in 2019. This was a slightly smaller drop than the EU average of 69.2%. There was an identical drop (67.3%) in total ticket sales, with the yearly gross reaching 19.9 million euros, down from 61.0 million euros the year before. The only interesting development is that the market share of domestic films rose from 5.3% to 28.2%.

Cyprus saw an even worse drop (79.4%), with admissions falling to an abysmal 177K.

I have now updated the first page with all this information and some more.

During the above four weekends, the cumulative admissions sold were:

    • 12,401
    • 13,886
    • 9,655 (new record-low)
    • 7,833 (new record-low)

These were the last four weekends before cinemas closed. At the time the plan was to re-open on January 7. Yet, tomorrow is May 7 and cinemas are still closed. Greece is slowly and steadily descending into authoritarianism and totalitarianism. For obvious reasons, I was not interested in reporting on the box office at all during October and there has been no box-office news since. However, for completeness, I have decided to add the last four weekends before lockdown, since I had missed them in October. There is nothing really to comment on about individual movies. 'Scoob!' managed four first-place finishes in a row – whether that's an achievement in these times is for you to judge. The race between 'Scoob!' and 'Greenland' was mildly interesting to observe since they closely followed each other. This post will be followed with another featuring 2020's Top 10 list – the most depressing Top 10 list you'll ever see, for sure...

Cumulative admissions fell to an abysmal tally of 9,815. These are numbers no one has ever seen before and by far the worst since the end of lockdown (since ever!). There is little hope that anything will improve since, on top of all this, many major blockbusters are being pushed further back into the distant future. 'Scoob!' has now threepeated on top, 'Mulan' is back in second place and 'Tenet' achieved the smallest drop of the Top 10. Most films plummeted by more than 55% while the only new opener, 'Vivarium' couldn't have performed worse.

This was the third worst weekend since the end of the lockdown period, with 20,669 admissions. The only weekends with fewer admissions were the two first post-lockdown weekends in early June, with 12,070 admissions. 'Scoob' dominated for a second weekend with a decent hold. Another animated film, 'Trolls 2', also achieved a decent hold, as is common with kid flicks. Most other holdovers plummeted, with the exception of Italian film 'Il traditore' and 1974 re-release 'Chinatown'. Only two new films made it into the Top 10, 'The War with Grandpa' and 'Wet Season'. The second one was relatively more successfull, since its 184-admission per-screen average was the only one in the Top 10 above 100 admissions. Things look grim for the next few weeks (if not months), with another lockdown looming...

Weekend admissions were 29,382 – the lowest since the start of the new season – thanks to a storm that caused severe damage and floods in many parts of the country and thanks to a coordinated campaign of terror by the government and the mainstream media regarding the "second wave" of the pandemic. 'Mulan' and 'Tenet' fell by 70%+ as did 'Trolls 2'. Even 'Il traditore' plummeted, despite tripling its screen count. 'Scoob!' and 'Greenland' were in a close race for first place. The formal 4-day weekend was won by the prior, but the latter won when taking into account previews. 'Tenet' reached 100K admissions and 'After 2' reached 50K admissions. Don't expect them to reach any other milestones. If the cinema crisis continues in the longer term, the financial viability of studios and exhibitors is gonna be in big trouble.

  9. Welcome back to the Greek box office thread! It's been six whole months since I last posted here. The Wuhan coronavirus pandemic has truly devastated us all. I have an unpleasant feeling that the box office will take years and years to fully recover. I'm worried we might even see some studios go bankrupt. Life will never be the same unfortunately, thanks to this manufactured crisis (no, I'm not saying the virus is manufactured, I'm saying the crisis is). Nevertheless, after six months, and with major releases starting to re-appear, it's worth having a go at returning to normality and hoping that we manage to put the whole thing behind us. Cinemas re-opened in Greece on the 4th of June. From then and up to the 27th of August, no film managed to score a single weekend above 10,000 admissions. Weekly reporting will resume with the weekend of August 27-30, which is when 'Tenet' was released.

    Weekend of 27th–30th August 2020

Rank Title Weekend admissions % Change Screen count / Change Total admissions Week

    10 Jungle Beat 610 +117.1% 10 -6 9,716 4

Weekend cumulative admissions: 48,496. 'Tenet' was the first high-profile flick to be released since March. Christopher Nolan doesn't deliver the mega-hits that he used to anymore. Perhaps its the choice of actors or its the lack of an intriguing storyline. Of course, this pic would've done better in normal times but it still opened far lower than 'Dunkirk' which was released exactly 3 years ago. In other news, 'Trolls 2' is lagging far behind its predecessor, which opened back in Novermber 2016 with 24,056 admissions and ended up with 99,384 admissions in total.

    Weekend of 3rd–6th September 2020

Weekend cumulative admissions: 55,253. Five new release entered the Top 10, while the top holdovers performed relatively well. 'Tenet's' drop was good thanks to a Wednesday start last week. The film will definitely surpass 100K admissions. 'After 2' opened to less than half of its predecessor, which finished its run with 100,956 admissions after an April 2019 debut. 'Trolls 2' is in a similar situation, with a predecessor near 100K admissions and itself struggling to make half of that. Oh dear...

    Weekend of 10th–13th September 2020

Rank Title Weekend admissions % Change Screen count / Change Total admissions Week

    10 The Apartment (re-release) 603 -70.2% 6 -6 9,295 3

Weekend cumulative admissions: 50,364. 'Mulan' scored one of the lowest openings of all time for a live-action Disney film, on par with 'The Jungle Book' (20,488 admission), 'Tron: Legacy' (19,262 admissions) and slightly better than 'Alice 2' (13,083 admissions). Of course, it got nowhere near 'Beauty and the Beast' (57,900 admissions) or 'Cinderella' (44,917 admissions). This was despite an ultra-wide opening. Meanwhile, the 100K-admission milestone is guaranteed for 'Tenet', although it seems unable to get much further than that. 'After 2' will barely earn more than half of its predecessor's total, a fate that is yet uncertain for equally troubled 'Trolls 2'. The performance of every other film has been so dismal I can't be bothered to talk about it.

Coronavirus knocked on Greece's door (officially) on 26th February. This had an immediate impact on cinema attendance, since cumulative admissions for the weekend of 27th February – 1st March dropped to 57,466. The previous low for early late February-early March had been 74,192 admissions, back in March 2014. However, another factor was the Monday public holiday – in Greece the Monday at the beginning of Lent (7th week before Easter) is a public holiday called Clean Monday. Thanks to the good weather and the spectre of coronavirus, Greeks had many reasons to avoid cinemas. Admissions plummeted and all films aiming for some sort of milestone immediately lost sight of it. Notably, the weekend witnessed the 7th smallest photo finish since 2008:

For a week or so, the official count of total cases remained less than 10. However, the following week they started rising by about 10 per day. Of course, I need to stress that these are official figures and, in reality, there must have been many more undetected cases. The box office took another hit, since not even two high-profile Hollywood releases could keep it afloat. Attendance dropped further to 55,559 admissions, With total cases having reached 100, the government closed schools and universities on 11th April and cinemas were closed on Saturday, 14th April, along with theaters and other businesses. No information has been published for the first two days of that weekend (12th and 13th Arpil). Cinemas of course remained closed this weekend as well and a curfew has been imposed (with certain exceptions) for 2 weeks, until Monday, 6th April. Therefore there will be another 2 weeks at least with no results.

Hopefully this will all end soon.

  11. MEDIA Salles has published annual results for 2019 throughout Europe. In Greece, 9,570,000 admissions were sold. This represents a 2.3% increase from a dismal 2018. All numbers back to 1989 can be found on the first page. Here is a graph of the last 15 years:

    dTvmI2Q.jpg

Since the crisis broke in 2008, one can see a very clear downhill trajectory (with a small uptick in 2009). After 2015, there has been a partial recovery and a plateau.

Cyprus, for which 2018 results had not been reported last year, has enjoyed two consecutive years of big increases. 791,000 admissions were sold in 2018 and 860,000 admissions were sold in 2019.

    tcIb9W3.jpg

Cyprus had a big dip in 2013 due to the economic crisis, which precipitated that year. It dipped further in 2014 but has now fully recovered to pre-crisis levels.

Openers were appalling. Not just the two embarassments at #1 and #2, but also 'The Aeronauts' and Greek film 'Apostratos', which failed spectacularly (2,835 and 2,230 admissions from 49 and 8 screens, respectively). 'Parasite' remains focused on its goal of 150,000 admissions, after another screen expansion. 'Little Women' dropped heavily coming off the Valntine's Day weekend. We could say 'Halwaii 5-0' is hemorrhaging at this point, while '1917' and 'Eftyhia' also dropped significantly despite small screen losses. 'Eftyhia' remains slightly behind 'Worlds Apart' at the same point in its run, despite a slightly bigger weekend. It would be quite disappointing if it ended its run a few thousand admissions behind the latter's total (669K admissions). Hopefully, it will move ahead, even if only for a few hundred admissions. Cumulative admissions for the weekend were slightly above 100,000. The box office is in desperate need of another hit, but next weekend seems like it's gonna be as dull as this one.

For a third weekend in a row, Greek crime parody film 'Halwaii 5-0' topped the box office and is on the verge of crossing the blockbuster milestone of 200K admissions. However, it is not clear that it can reach 250K admissions. For now, it is focused on surpassing Greek comedy sequels 'Bachelor 2' and 'Bach3lor' (236K and 238K admissions respectively). It experienced quite a sharp drop, compared to its softer sophomore drop, which is an indication that it wasn't the couples' pick for Valentine's Day. 'Little Women' and 'Parasite' managed to satisfy the demand, though, with '1917' and 'Eftyhia' also playing their part. 'Little Women' had a very good hold, but when taking into account the screen expansion and the Valnetine's Day factor, its hold is a bit underwhelming. 'Parasite' managed an impressive comeback, but it still ended up selling slightly fewer admissions than last year's Oscar Best Picture winner, 'Green Book', on its post-Oscars weekend. Overall, it is aiming for close to 150K admissions by the end of its run. '1917' may have lost the big award a week ago, but it still managed a superb drop. 250K admissions is now guaranteed and, by the looks of it, it will manage to stay safely ahead of 'Halwaii 5-0' (thankfully). Fun little piece of trivia, it has overtaken 'The Favourite' (225,203 admissions), which was also a hugely hyped Oscar Best Picture contender. In the meantime, 'Eftyhia' is now only 1,100 admissions behind 'Worlds Apart' at the same point in its run, which also happened to be a Valentine's Day weekend. The film dropped 48% on the following weekend, so next weekend is 'Eftyhia's' chance to move ahead. 647,000 admissions down, 22,000 admissions to go...

As for openers, the scene was as dreadful as it was boring. In fact, I can't even be bothered to report on it. Here's a chart of all Oscar Best Picture contenders and their (non-final, in some cases) totals:

    Oscar Films 2019
    Title Total admissions
    Joker 904,988
    1917 243,405
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 232,159
    Parasite 104,757
    Little Women 50,040
    Ford v Ferrari 43,358
    Jojo Rabbit 31,253
    The Irishman Unknown
    Marriage Story Unknown

Authoritarian-minded Netflix refuses to report numbers for its own films. Although '1917', 'Parasite' and 'Little Women' still have some steam left, the list's rankings will not change from now on. Prediction for these three films' final totals: 270K, 150K and 90K respectively.

On another 150K-admission-plus weeekend, 'Halwaii 5-0' retained first place, mostly thanks to paltry competition. It didn't hold very well, but it also didn't drop too much. 250K admissions seem like a safe bet from now and even 300K admissions are not out of the question. As for 'Eftyhia', it is still closing in on 'Worlds Apart', as it is only 2,700 admissions behind it at the same point in its run. It had a relatively high drop, but Valentine's Day could potentially serve as a booster next weekend. It is now 36,000 admissions from its target, 'Worlds Apart's' 669K-admission total. The third main interest of the weekend, '1917', had a small drop and has again switched places with 'Eftyhia'. It achieved this despite losing a third of its screens, meaning that it increased its per-screen average compared to last weekend. Although the film didn't win Best Picture on Sunday, it is still being talked about a lot and is bound to endure for a while. Sunday night's winner, 'Parasite', sold 1,385 admissions this weekend, a boost from the 1,274 admissions of the previous weekend. With an 89,434-admission total, it now seems that the 100K-admission milestone is doable.

As for openers, 'Little Women' was not as little as 'Birds of Prey', but both movies were smaller than what would qualify as success. Here is a list of films similar to 'Little Women'. I made it myself and I'm not an expert in the genre, so please point out any serious omissions.

    Comps for 'Little Women'
Title National OW Release date Total admissions Multiple
    Pride and Prejudice 38,200 Wed 4 Jan 06 130,000 3.40
    Mona Lisa Smile 39,000 Fri 30 Jan 04 130,000 3.33
    Little Women 22,124 Thu 6 Feb 20
    Hidden Figures 5,728 Thu 23 Feb 17 14,273 2.49
    Lady Bird 5,696 Thu 1 Mar 18 11,890 2.09
    Brooklyn 3,195 Thu 31 Dec 15 9,940 3.11
    Testament of Youth Straight-to-DVD

The totals for 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Mona Lisa Smile' are my own estimates. 'Little Women' has opened in between the duds and the successes and its total is probably headed in a simialr direction. It was otherwise a quiet weekend.

With another 179K admissions sold this weekend, the box office remains in booming mode. 'Halwaii 5-0' confirmed my fears, as it exploded onto the scene with 688-admission per-screen average and the highest opening for a Greek film since 'Worlds Apart' (95,343 admissions). There is of course no way that it will even approach the latter's final tally (669K admissions), since that film opened on the weekend before Christmas 2015 and capitalized the holiday period. Nevertheless, 'Halwaii 5-0' is a guaranteed hit, with 200K admissions very likely to be reached. It will need to hold very well in order to cross 300K admissions, but it is not out of the question. A more detailed explanation of why this film was very likely gonna be a blockbuster can be found in the previous weekened's analysis.

In the meantime, 'Eftyhia' was not decimated by 'Halwaii 5-0'. To the contrary, it had a solid hold. At the same point in its run (7th weekend), 'Worlds Apart' sold 14,633 admissions, for a total of 616,444 admissions. 'Eftyhia' is less than 6,000 admissions behind, with a 7th weekend that is bigger by more than 5,000 admissions. The odds are now in its favour and without any major surprises, 'Eftyhia' should claim the title of the Biggest Greek Film of the Decade. If 'Halwaii 5-0' didn't manage to push it off the cliff, I doubt that there is anything in the near future that can.

'1917' had a sizeable drop, but has now crossed the 200K-admission milestone. If it wins Oscar Best Picture next Sunday, it should get a boost, although I don't see it going much farther than 250K admissions. Most holdovers had near-50% drops, while 'Pets United' endured as the biggest animated film on the market despite competition from Russian animated sequel 'Sheep and Wolves 2' (2,869 admissions). As for other openers, 'The Lighthouse' scored an impressive 1,181-admission per-screen average. It says a lot that people would rush to see a black-and-white horror film with a 1.19:1 aspect ratio. It may be a minority that seeks such stuff, but it's an active one. Below the Top 10, 'Frozen II' dropped 47% to 1,599 admissions and has reached 320,514. Turns out it'll barely beat 'Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa' (323,607 admissions) to become the 4th biggest animated film since 2000. Finally, 'Jumanji 2' dropped 65% for a 1,162-admission weekend and a 91,009-admission total. It won't reach the 100K-admission milestone and it's only beaten its predecessor's total by 14%, despite opening 59% higher.

[UPDATE 5th Feb]: Unfortunately Flix got many weekend box office figures wrong. All other box office websites agree on the corrected figures. I usually take the weekend figures from Flix because it is the first to report them, but they don't tend to be the most accurate. The numbers now displayed on the chart are the correct ones.

Overall, 154,596 admissions were sold during the weekend in Greek cinemas, a drop from last weekend but still a decent total. January 2020 has been a big success, beating all previous Januaries back to 2012. 'Eftyhia' reclaimed the weekend's top spot from '1917', totaling four weekends in first place. 'Eftyhia' continues to soar, as it surpassed Greek comedy 'The Island' (549K admissions) and is days away from overtaking 'Skyfall' (580K admissions), to become the third-biggest film of the previous decade, behind Greek film 'Worlds Apart' and 'Joker'. The prior is in big trouble, as' Eftyhia's' momentum indicates that it will surpass that film's 669K-admission total. It is now less than 100K admissions away from that goal and, with a 30K-admission-plus weekend, achieving it would be a certainty, except... this Thursday marks the release of 'Halwaii 5-0'. If this film ends up being a success (more on this later), it could potentially eat into 'Eftyhia's' audience and prevent it from topping 'Worlds Apart', which it certainly deserves to beat. '1917' had another solid drop and it remains on course for a 250K-admission finish. The film is also potentially threatened by 'Halwaii 5-0' although it's hard to quantify the risk in any meaningful way. We'll just have to wait and see. With word-of-mouth for '1917' spreading quickly and with a lucrative awards season so far, chances are its box -office run will get boosted by an Oscar Best Picture win early next month.

Holdovers generally enjoyed small drops, which is in part thanks to the week's weak openers (pun intended). All three openers that got into the Top 10 were very mediocre. 'Jojo Rabbit's' Oscar noms were clearly not enough to persuade people to watch it. It's not being talked about much anyway. Neither of the three openers achieved notable per-screen averages. As for last week's openers, 'Bad Boys for Life' had the best hold of the Top 10, 'Dolittle' also held well and remains in the lead, while 'Richard Jewell' is slowly disappearing into insignificance. Greek romantic drama '...Forever' has enjoyed a decent run, which is now coming to an end, while 'Jumanji 2', which had opened higher than '...Forever', has been falling precipitously over tha past weeks. This is the first weekend that it didn't drop more than 50%, although it came quite close. It may not even reach the 100K-admission milestone. Given that it opened 59% higher than its predecessor, reaching a total only 25% higher is a big embarassment.

Now, back to the big threat. 'Halwaii 5-0' is a Greek parody film starring one of the most famous contemporary Greek stand-up comedians, Markos Seferlis. The title is a portmanteau which combines the words halva and Hawaii. Halva (or halwa) is a traditional Greek sweet, but it is also used in a derogatory way to signify a person who has gone soft and chubby. Hawaii Five-0 is an American crime drama TV series. This film is a parody of Hawaii Five-0 in which the owner of a big halva factory is murdered and the protagonist, a detective played by Markos Seferlis, has to find the murderer among 5 suspects. It is yet another Greek-made rip-off with a stupid, cheesy and cringey premise, but with Markos Seferlis in the lead role, I have already heard from far too many sane people that they plan to watch the film. I can see it opening relatively big, although holding power is a totally different story. We'll be here next Monday analysing the results. Fingers crossed that 'Eftyhia' doesn't get decimated...

  17. 'Eftyhia' was #1 during the weekdays, since it sold 29,318 admissions from Monday to Wednesday. Last week, it sold 40,249 admissions over the same three days. That's a 27% drop, which is better than the weekend's drop! The total has now reached 539,304 admissions, which means it just passed 'Endgame' (538,330 admissions) to become 2019's second-biggest film, behind 'Joker'. It also surpassed 'What If...' (531,447 admissions) to become the second-biggest Greek film of the decade, behind 'Worlds Apart' (669K admissions). If it achieves another 30K-admission weekend, it will already be at 570K admissions and I think 'Worlds Apart' will be in serious trouble....

'1917' sold 21,757 admissions from Monday to Wednesday. Last week, it sold 31,367 admissions over the same three days. That's a 31% drop. Although worse than the weekend drop, still very good. It is now at 144,960 admissions.

It seems that this weekend will be another battle between the two for first place. 'Cats' and 'Jojo Rabbit' will be released, although I doubt they have any chances at challenging the above duo.
