I think the extemely close proximity to Endgame killed that, especially internationally.

I think I've said it before, but Detective Pikachu came out at the worst possible year competition-wise. No matter where you put it on the schedule that summer, it would have been overshadowed by Endgame, by Toy Story, by Spider-Man, by Lion King, and so on. Even in the springtime, it would have been overshadowed by Captain Marvel and/or the build-up to Endgame. Even the holidays were a bad time with Frozen/Jumanji/Star Wars. If Pikachu came out in July 2018 or something, it would have at the very least made close to Lego Movie numbers IMO, at least domestically.

What is this film opening against Speak No Evil?

Another dodgy Angels film? Everything they’ve done since SOF has flopped.

It's a documentary by Matt Walsh. If you don't know who that is...I wish I was you. One look at his Wikipedia page tells you everything you need to know about that evil, despicable man.

Skimming through the reviews...many say Gaga is very good but underused and her character is cast to the sidelines outside of the musical pieces.

    I'm really disappointed.

Literally the only reason I wanted to watch this was for Gaga. Hearing her being wasted and underutilized just makes me wonder what was the point of all this?

I’ll eat crow on this one. Yeah the average rating is nothing special but with burton it was reasonable to expect yet another creative disaster, and clearly this isn’t that. Well done Tim, have a cookie.

Yep. Was admittedly disappointed that this was just another boring, safe bit of nostalgia slop, but I'll take a bland "greatest hits" sequel compared to what Burton put out the last decade. I just finished rewatching all his movies, and his run from Alice in Wonderland through Dumbo can honestly be a contender for worst run of 2010s movies for any filmmaker. Zemeckis at least has one or two bright spots in the last decade or so.
