Didn’t people say the same thing about The Fall Guy? I feel a lot of films in the past year were supposed to have some sort of walkups, but they just never manifested.
IO2 is also a different beast, it’s only really comparable to something like Kung Fu Panda 4 ramping up at the last minute.
I just don’t see where the interest, let alone excitement, is for Twisters. At least not yet. Or why we should assume a bunch of flyover state people or whatever you want to call them will show up in droves at the last minute.
I think the one thing that has been consistent, and I'm sure the tracking team can correct me if I'm wrong, is that movies that skew more white typically have bad walk-ups. Elvis, Indiana Jones, Fall Guy, Furiosa, Flower Moon. I think even Top Gun didn't really have big walk-ups.
By contrast, stuff skewed more towards Black/Hispanic viewers typically have bigger walk-ups. So GxK, Equalizer, Creed, Apes, Minions, Kung Fu Panda, Inside Out, etc.
So yeah. Not a great sign for Twisters, though I believe the consensus is it should still cross 40M at least, maybe even 50M. That's still fine.

This is also great for Bad Boys. Following Rise of the Beasts’ second weekend, it gets to over 30M. That would be an insane hold right there.

It seemed like a perfectly kid friendly movie from that trailer cut. Is it, uhh... not?

Wild Robot looks like a movie that deserves all the box office…but with the way non-NTCs perform nowadays, I don’t think it will get there. 😕

Okay, gonna be honest here -- I had no idea Borderlands even existed until I got the trailer for it last night but it looked... passable entertaining?
Also didn't know about Wild Robot before that seemed likewise likely to be okayish
lol what was Borderlands doing playing in front of a kids movie?

Any bombs yall looking forward too?
Won't lie. I can't wait to see Borderlands crater. That's going to be epic l.
Looking forward to bombs is kind of weird. Like unless it has Harvey as a producer, or it’s a movie promoting something horrible, why would you want a movie to be a failure?

It's not the NWH thread but weekend threads can get a bit shooting the shit about random stuff while we wait for a real number to come in, so:
Yeah as a purely factual objective matter NWH was extremely well received
The nostalgia of villains+T&A largely carried that, the actual plot was pretty painfully stupid and that's not exactly revisionism plenty of people were saying as much at the time
Yeah you can talk about this stuff while we wait for numbers. But you have people sniping at each other, trolling, being mean. And like…we don’t need that. We really don’t need that.

Moderation
It is too early in the day for this. Please act like adults and treat each other with respect. If you can’t, I will have to threadban some folks. And I know none of you want this on a weekend as exciting as this.

That Variety review really makes it clear I'll have a bad time. These Illumination sequels always feel like a bunch of TV episodes stitched together, and I hate that.

Would’ve thought you’d be all for another Chalamet film.
Oh I’m still going to see it, because I’m a whore. I just can’t imagine where else you would take the story, unless you just do Charlie and the Chocolate Factory again. And is that really what we need?

EXPERIENCE
ALL
THE
FEELS
It has been a good while since we’ve had a big weekend like this. The whys are for a number of reasons we have all agonized over for months now. But leave it to good ol’ Michael Rat and those masterful wizards at Pixar to bring people back to the multiplex once again with a nostalgic favorite that’s a literal emotional roller coaster.
Inside Out was a phenomenon 9 years ago (God, I feel so old right now). It took the classic 90s sitcom Herman’s Head, and decided to create an existential and moving story about growing up, dealing with heavy changes in life, and how feeling sadness is valid and healthy. As much as any other emotion in fact. It was an instant box office success despite the record-breaking popularity of Jurassic World the week prior, was praised as one of, if not Pixar’s best movie ever, and has even been used by psychologists to help patients understand what they are going through.
The basic concept and creative world found in Riley’s mind meant a sequel was a no-brainer, pun very much intended. And yeah, we finally have one nearly a decade later, with a new generation of kids experiencing their own equivalent to Toy Story 3 or Finding Dory. A nostalgic return to an old favorite. But it’s not just nostalgia that’s getting people hyped. The trailers promise tons of new and wacky emotions, great jokes, and a heartfelt look at puberty and growing up and dealing with turbulent and even more complicated emotions.
Disney Adults and general audiences are going crazy over this, with the movie expected to give us our first 100M+ opening weekend since Barbie a year prior, at least according to the wonderful and amazing tracking team. Some even say it’ll make a billion dollars. Can it reach such amazing heights? Is the public ready to cry at Pixar once again? Or will the summer doldrums continue? Only time will tell, but let’s just try and have some fun in the meantime.
But if you want to have fun, you gotta follow the rules. You know what time it is...
1. ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS. THIS INCLUDES SPOILERS UNDER A SPOILER TAG. This also applies to every other movie currently in theaters and every new movie/show recently released on streaming. So no Bad Boys: Ride or Die spoilers, no Garfield spoilers, no The Acolyte spoilers, no The Boys spoilers, etc.
2. GOOD VIBES! Big weekends like these are supposed to be fun. So don’t be a party pooper and ruin things for everybody. You don't have to fight others who have opinions different than yours, you don't have to make fun of somebody for not knowing the nuances of box office IMs. It's all just silly fun, so don't make it something it's not.
3. THE REPORT AND IGNORE BUTTONS ARE YOUR FRIENDS.
And lastly...
4. DON'T BE A DICK
We good? We good. Now...
WITHOUT FURTHER ADO
LET'S DO THIS SHIT
