Your Name is my biggie, but I'll also go for Boy and the Beast, Garden of Words, When Marnie Was There, Ponyo and the cheesey as hell K-On Movie.
Your Name is absolutely gorgeous! Seeing it for the third time on Saturday! If the plot isn't enough to persuade people to go, the animation should be because it is simply out of this world! If only Disney continued with 2D animation for their theatrical releases... I'm still crossing my fingers for a 2D/3D hybrid ala "Paperman" to be utilized in a feature length film!

I managed to watch a few animated films I've wanted to watch for a very long time:
- Origins: Spirited of the Past, 2.5/5
- The Dragon Dentist, 4/5
- Momo no e Tagemi, 4/5
- Children Who Chase Lost Voices, 4.5/5
Since I have another day of nothing on my schedule in preparation for vacation, does anyone have recommendations for visually and narratively appealing anime films? I love fantasy films with fantastical beasts, adventure, etc.

I wonder how well Mulan will do next year. The public reactions from social media were not supportive or positive, especially considering how iconic "I'll Make a Man Out of You" and "Reflection" are. We were having a discussion about it in class and I swear there were melt downs when the teacher said, "Did you guys hear about Mulan not being a musical?" BUT if its cinematography, direction, etc. take inspiration from some of the most well renowned, respected, and greatest Asian films (since Asian films are known for their art direction, cinematography and use of colors to elevate the film and are just as integral to the story as the actors and dialogue are), then I can live with it.
Hopefully it does better than Cinderella and Maleficent domestically and worldwide. I don't really see it being a billion box-office contender now that the musical aspect is gone and Shang has apparently been removed from the film. But that's the beauty of storytelling: there are many variants and perspectives when telling and interpreting a story and we have to be open minded!
As for this week's box-office... I don't really care for Power Rangers or Life and am content with Get Out and Beauty and the Beast continuing to perform very well.

- $500-550 million domestic
- $650-750 million overseas

Cinderella felt pretty flat to me. Liked it though.
To each their own. I absolutely ADORED Cinderella because it just felt magical to me. To be totally honest, I was expecting a mediocre, flat, and carbon-copy of a film, but I was left flabbergasted after the movie was finished. As for Beauty and the Beast, I think I my expectations might have been too high.
-
I don't know what it was about Cinderella (2015)... it was truly magical: it was made with such great care, love, and devotion for the project and it truly projects off the screens. To this day, Cinderella (2015) remains my favorite remake. It was such a beautiful and amazing experience!
- Cinderella
- The Jungle Book
- Beauty and the Beast
- Maleficent
- Alice in Wonderland
The acting in Cinderella was MILES better than Beauty and the Beast, too, and it seems like everyone apart of the film were in equilibrium in terms of skills in acting. Truly one of the best experiences in the theater I've ever had, but that's just me.
I really loved Beauty and the Beast too, but it did not feel as magical as I hoped it would. It's not a bad film, nor is it a great film, it's simply a "good" film.
-
Our high school did Beauty and the Beast (tonight's opening night) for our musical and for the first time in forever, we've sold out: ALL 1,400 seats in the auditorium are filled. Usually, the amount of tickets sold is between 1,000-1,100 per night for a total of 7,000-7,700 for the entire week, but this week, we might get to 9,800...
Pre-sales for tomorrow night have also reached 450 out of 450 available pre-sale tickets, too! Some people went to the live action showing in the movie theater and then came straight to see us perform!
Since Disney's releasing Mulan next year, we might as well do Mulan for our musical, it's a damn good, symbiotic business!

Hidden Figures deserves all the success coming its way. Half of our school got to see the film last Friday and everyone loved it!
We erupted into boisterous clapping when Mr.Harrison said, "Here at NASA, we all pee the same color," and took down the sign. When the film ended, there was complete and utter silence before one by one we stood up and gave the film a rousing standing ovation.
Never have I witnessed a film touching so many people to the point that it received a standing ovation. It was an amazing and unforgettable cinema experience. Usually, when our school does cinema trips for field trips and such, the theater is a ruckus. However, for Hidden Figures, there was nothing but deep admiration and respect.
As one of my friends said, "Damn was that impressive!"

Tell that to Moana and TGD.
Moana's at $243.1 million domestically and $565 million worldwide and will comfortably ascend to $600+ million worldwide. It may not have been the massive success everyone was hoping for, but it surely made up for it by posting great legs in almost all of its markets. An original animated property earning $230+ million is nothing to scoff at.
PS: $250 million may be the magic number, but remember, only 20 animated films have ever passed that mark and only 12 have grossed over $300 million of the thousands upon thousands of animated films that have been released over the years.

Moana managed to cross the 1,000,000 admissions mark in its second week and dropped by 39.2% in weekly admissions. As with every other release, Moana got hit hard by the two local blockbusters that got released during its second week and the release of the final installment of the Resident Evil franchise which took away a chunk of its screens. However, Moana should rebound somewhat this weekend as 설날 falls on the 27th, 28th, and 30th of this week.

In This Corner of the World continues to rise up despite being released back in November has climbed to third place today. Could possibly be in in first position next week (not sure what comes out this weekend)
Thurs to Thurs
1. Honnoji Hotel new***
2. Your Name +45%
3. In This Corner of the World +127%
4. Rogue One -41%
5. Resident Evil -38%
In This Corner of the World performance is stunning: despite being a limited release, it managed to crack the Top 10, surge on a weekly/weekend basis, and could now potentially hit the top spot next week.
If any of you are unaware, In This Corner of the World is an animated historical drama directed by Sunao Katabuchi and written by both Sunao Katabuchi and Chie Uratani. The film tells the story of a pre-World War II Japan (specifically Hiroshima) and stunningly and heartbreakingly contrasts Japanese traditional with the culture of war and its detrimental, astonishing, and scarring effects.
The project was one that was crowdfunded and broke the Japanese record for most contributors and money raised for the creation of a film: contributors raised over ¥39 million. Additionally, fans raised enough money to send the Katabuchi overseas to show and advertise his film. All in all, contributors raised over $400,000 for both the creation of the film and advertisements.
Along with a great box office run that seems to only be beginning, In This Corner of the World has been lauded and praised worldwide: both for it's gripping and emotional storytelling, but for its depiction of life before war and its views on Japanese culture and the very essence and culture of warfare. In This Corner of Our World has won 13 awards of its 17 nominations and is nominated for a further 4 awards, has been named the best film of the year by many publication including Japan's oldest magazine, and Katabuchi has been named the best director of the year.
In conclusion, if you have a penchant for drama films and animated features, then you need to certainly view In This Corner of the World.

Moana's debuted with a first week total of 862,553 admissions: the 3rd highest among recent WDAS releases behind only Big Hero 6 and Frozen. Although in the midst of strong competition from two local blockbusters and Your Name, Moana is doing really well. I'm expecting a finish north of 3 million admissions and anything above $20 million.
Additionally, Brazil should post strong numbers above $20 million and could beat Frozen as the largest WDAS release of all time. If Japan follow suit with these really good late market performances, then anything north of $40/50/60 million should be enough to levy Moana above the $600 million threshold globally!

IT got bumped forward a week at the very last second. That may have something to do with it. (also it is great and kids are loving it).
Even last Monday it was being advertised as a 19th January release and then came out on the 12th.
It's getting rave reviews and the audience scores are on par with Zootopia, so I think Disney has another hit on their hands.
PS: Is it just me or is Moana's skin lighter in the Korean advertisements?

Moana is holding very well in SK and should finish its first week in the upper 800k region which is a great total given how strong Your Name is performing. It's no Zootopia or Frozen (Zootopia's performance is simply stunning), but it will still get past $20 million and given that two local blockbusters will be released and Your Name will continue to deliver the goods and could gross north of $40 million, that is a great total for Moana.
I'm expecting anywhere north of $20 million and $40 million from S. Korea and Japan respectively for a cumulative of $60+ million from those two countries. Remaining markets could cash in $20+ million for $80+ million which would bring Moana's worldwide cumulative to $582 million and around $20+ million from remaining markets brings its overall worldwide cumulative to $600+ million.
If Moana does "bomb" when concerning the current performance of WDAS films in Japan, then Moana MIGHT not hit $600 million, but that's a big what if. Even Inside Out grossed $32.5 million in Japan and that was defeated by Minions in terms of gross in Japan (IO, $32.5M VS Minions, $42.7M).

Moana had quite a large Saturday bump of around 187% which is larger than Frozen, Your Name, Big Hero 6, and Zootopia's. Additionally, should Moana increase on Sunday by a small/good margin, Moana should comfortably pass 900,000 admissions in its first week of release given a Sunday to Monday drop of anywhere between 57-67%.
Sadly, however, the prospects of Moana surpassing the 1 million admissions mark in its first week of release look iffy given how strong Your Name is playing and Moana being somewhat muted compared to the likes of Frozen (I know, not an apples to apples comparison).
That being said, Moana, given how strongly it has been received should surpass Big Hero 6 and become the 3rd highest grossing film from the WDAS Resurgence Era behind Frozen and Zootopia.
P.S: I also decided to change La La Land for BH6 for my chart given how similar BH6's performance is to Moana's.
