The weekend was down 27.88% from the same weekend last year. As a result, 2019 has lowered its lead under 9%, to 8.92%.

Despite the very solid weekdays and great overall holds, the week cost 2019 almost a full percentage point. In 2018 The Meg was a slightly weaker performer, but thanks to Ant Man 2 the week received some serious (at least for August standards) boost.

Hobbs & Shaw dropped in line with expectations, but I'm upping its projected total a little due to the strong weekdays.

Wonderful holds for Spider Man, MIB and Toy Story 4. Far From Home has now a small chance of beating The Amazing Spider Man, currently #12 in thye superhero chart with 12.77 millions, and the highest grossing non-Raimi Spider Man ever (not like there are many...). MIB will finish 30% above Godzilla,  and 20/25% below Pets 2. In May, nobody thought that would translate into a sub-3M gross. Toy Story 4 is saving some face thanks to some great late legs - considering it's getting close to 1M admissions and will certainly get past that once SIAE releases the actual number, the movie has moved from failure territory to big disappointment.

And in 2 days...The Lion King. I'm expecting a 8M 4-day opening (10M+ 5-day) for a total around right between Alice in Wonderland (30.4) and BatB (20.5). It has a bigger potential...but bad weather is nowhere to be seen.

Only a 8.6m weekend, if  we subtract Germany and Japan we get $4m that is pretty bad tbh.

Yeah, that's pretty bad. Obon was good but lower than expected, Germany is Germany and the holdovers fell pretty badly.

Say 40M from current markets (Japan will boost the multiplier), 10M domestically and 15M from remaining markets - that's 1.082B. Totally unlikely to see a finish either above 1.1B or below TS3.

The weekend was unexpectedly DOWN, though by just 1.71% from the same weekend last year. Despite that, 2019 has increased its lead to 9.79%, mainly thanks to the H&S previews and BtS' relatively strong OD.

I just can't believe the weekend was down from 2018's, when The Meg opened with 1.68M. Thought H&S would comfortably beat that, but it did by less than 20%.

Hobbs & Shaw was...A DISASTER! Its 4-day opening beat the ODs (!) of the previous 3 chapters by just 25/30%. Its total will finish below the OWs of all of them. It was also very frontloaded. The heatwave certainly played a role in this, but it's not like holdovers were really hurt by that (the overall drops are totally fine), so this is mostly due to lack of interest. With no bad weather on the horizon, H&S will just barely beat The Meg (5.00M total) and compete with Slop 2 for the title of biggest failure of the year.

Bring the Soul did pretty well, but it was heavily frontloaded, so it will likely drop to the bottom of the chart as soon as next weekend. Also, to be honest. before the movie opened I didn't even know the band existed.

Spider Man: FFH is the winner of this weekend. Sub-50% drop despite the great weather, meaning the absolute certainty to beat Civil War in the sh rankings.

    10) Suicide Squad > 12,11

    11) Hancock > 12,00

    12) The Amazing Spider-Man > 11,77

    13) Spider Man: Far From Home > 11.50 (projection)

    14) Captain America – Civil War > 11,29

    15) Aquaman > 10,77

    16) Batman V Superman – Dawn of the Justice > 10,55

The Spider Man movies used to be bigger, but at least it's a big improvement over Homecoming's depressing result (lowest SM movie with <9M).

Toy Story 4 held surprisingly well and has now beaten The Grinch among this year's animated titles. Makes the disappointing result less abominable.

No idea what happened to Hotel Artemis...

Outside the top 10, Aladdin increased over last weeknd (from 21K to 23K) and is now very likely to pass the 2.4M admissions mark.

This week...basically nothing except Crawl. Nobody wants to release a movie the week before TLK and in which pretty much everyone is on vacation.

why don't they count Friday into the OW? shouldn't it be similar to thursday previews in NA or 5 day openings in other countries

What cannastop said (which is a practical reason), plus:

*Friday is a real opening day, and it's not part of the weekend range, so there's no logical reason to include its gross into the OW.

*Thursday previews in NA have become ridiculous at the point they can be hardly considered as previews. Not a good idea to copy a cheater.
