     Critics Consensus

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence remain good company even when Bad Boys strains to up the ante, proving there's still life left in this high-octane franchise.

Critics have never "Loved" this Franchise mostly because they loathe Michael Bay.   But Audiences have always given Bad Boys high scores.   "Bad Boys" and "Bad Boys II" got trashed by critics but audiences like them.  "Bad Boys For Life" got the best critical reviews of the Franchise.

Not sure how it works, Did RT lower their certified score to just 68-69%?

20th Century/Disney’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues to show playability with just a 28% drop from last weekend overseas, adding $15.2M in 52 material markets for a $197.1M international cume. Notable holds include Germany (+32%), Brazil (+3%), Australia (-7%), France (-13%), Mexico (-23%), UK (-31%), China (-40%), Japan (-50%) and Spain (-50%).

The global total is now $337.1M and the latest installment is the best of the franchise so far in India, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Iraq, Lebanon, Lithuania, Nigeria and Turkey.

Following its muted debut last session, Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga had a $21M international weekend in 77 markets; a good 38% drop from the holdovers but coming off of a low base. The overseas total is now $64.7M for $114.4M global.

There were some strong holds, including Germany (-4%), Belgium (-24%), France (-26%), Brazil (-27%), Australia (-30%), Korea (-30%), Holland (-32%) and Saudi Arabia (-39%).

Korea is a standout here where the movie is still No. 1 and has grossed $8.2M. Also notable, Japan opened the prequel to No. 1 at $2M, bigger than Blade Runner 2049 (+5%), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (+18%), Fury Road (+20%) and Dune: Part Two (+62%). Repeat viewers are expected with excellent word-of-mouth and positive reviews.

International hold is so much better than domestic. I guess near 200m finish is likely given the lack of action tentpole.

The tabby added such new markets this session as Poland with $2.4M, which is 45% higher than The Secret Life of Pets 2Australia debuted to $2M and Indonesia bowed with $700K, 8% above Puss In Boots: The Last Wish.

In holdover markets, Germany climbed 131% to take over the top slot in its fourth weekend for a local total of $7.6M. The UK came back for seconds down just 5% in its sophomore session for a cume of $8.1M. Mexico has now preyed upon $19M, which is 9% ahead of the lifetime of The Secret Life of Pets 2. Malaysia jumped up 21% in its second weekend to elevate its cume to $1.5M, the fourth highest total of the year for a Hollywood title in the market.

Still to release markets include France and Japan.

  5. The movie is good but tried too hard to address the criticism to the last movie, i.e. little plot and dialogue. This round the movie felt unnecessary plot heavy and the dialogue sound too unnatural in an apocalyptic world settings.

I know the movie had to address why Furiosa is one arm in FR, but damn, the way the movie depicts still hurt and thrill.

  6. Another issue lingering with American cinema is overdependent of English-language title. I feel like American public only watch their own movies. In Malaysia, when MCU fatigue and strike impacting cinema, regional movies from Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, SKorea, India and Japan quickly filling up the market and ensure the industry staying afloat. Diversifying content regardless of region or language is really paying off for Malaysian cinema to recover.

For USA, people should start seeing the benefit of this diversification. Don't forget that last year both Heron + Godzilla-1 combined made 100m is the reason why December ended up pretty ok without mega-hit like A2 or NWH.

  7. Looks like How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is becoming a hit in Malaysia cinema too. Cinema is quickly adding showtimes to keep up the demand as good WOM quickly spread. Monday is public holiday and that should help the movie further. Whereas twilight continue to hold very well in 3rd weekend.

Willy Wonka and Top Gun are bigger brands than Mad Max though. I feel anyone should have been able to guess that a spin off/prequel 9 years later to a film that wasn't even a huge hit likely wasn't going to light the box office on fire

The point is not about brand, is about people obsession to only figure out a reason after a movie become a flop or success. It looks like they are just giving explanation to fit into something that already happened.

The point is not about "Nobody wanted this or that", it is more like "Nobody know what everyone wanted".

Too many were focused on hyping up the prequel that we are learning nobody wanted (Furiosa).

i don't really buy this "nobody wanted this or that" theory. Nobody wanted top gun sequel but it blow up to 700m++, it is only until then people start to attribute the breakout to various reasons. That is classic way of captain afterthought. Likewise for Wonka, a prequel that went so successful. I bet if that movie turns out flopped, people would easily attribute it to "because nobody wanted a Wonka prequel".

  10. The terrible May ends up at 550m finish. All except Kingdom and IF severely miss my expectation. I had Kingdom and IF at 140-150m and 110-120m respectively and I am glad both of them made it. Fall guys I had it at 125m on the basis that TLC did 105m but it likely ends up with just 90m. Garfield and Furiosa are the biggest miss. I thought Garfield could do 180m-200m because even an original like Migration did 125m. Whereas I always peg Furiosa at 130-150m as I was thinking Hemsworth and a good quality action flick could bring it there since even BT made it to 100m.

I don't think my expectation was very unrealistic but sadly the market isn't function properly.
