  1. Well, I guess Action Point is what happens when a film is not efficiently advertised. If I have to have the thought come to me in which I consider whether or not people know that a film is coming out, then yeah, the film is in a bit of trouble.

I'm rooting for Adrift to do as well as it can. Hopefully it pulls through in the wake of Solo's disappointing gross.

I think Upgrade will do a little better than people think based on its positive reception. I'm thinking that'll push it above $3M.

  2. Infinity War is a masterwork, but I wouldn't say it's Best Picture material just yet. Same with Black Panther. Great films in their own right, but we need to wait and see how good the Oscar candidates will be. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts those films will tell more important stories in the long run.

  4. I'm sure A24 has a fanbase that goes to their acclaimed, high-profile releases, but I wonder if First Reformed might eat into a small sliver of Hereditary's gross because of how well it's doing in its platform release. Am I reading to much into it? I probably am.

The most important thing is that the movie is good. Box office is secondary. Though i admit, if it fails to crack 1B Worldwide or 100M OW DOM, i will probably have a meltdown.

I don't think we have to worry about this film's quality with J.A. Bayona in the director's chair.

    That's my take.

Being shopped to other studios amid dispute between Sony and the producers:

This article also has information about a petition to stop the release of this film. The petition involves the father of the girl that was attacked by two of her friends who were dedicated believers of the Slenderman internet creepypasta. The petition has over 19,000 signatures, less than 1,000 away from its goal (which is 20,000). I've posted the link below.

  7. I'll go ahead and say it. I can probably squeeze my pointer finger and thumb together to help explain how close I was to making a thread that would've had Adrift topping its debut weekend over Solo's second weekend. But I really don't think it can break out quite that much, not with the reviews it's getting. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised and see Adrift put up a good fight; I can see this film catching the interest of quite a few moviegoers.

  8. Solo: A Star Wars Story

    May 28th, 3:00 PM, 90-95% full

    Pointe Theater 14, Wilmington, NC

Many of the audience members were children and teenagers. The theater was so jam-packed that me and my dad had to sit separately.

    Trailers

Bohemian Rapsody (some kids started dancing to the Queens music; it was really cute)

    Mowgli (murmurs)

    Skyscraper (murmurs)

    Adrift (significant audience engagement)

Ant-Man and The Wasp (large amounts of laughter)

Laughs at appropriate moments. Gasps at appropriate moments, including the ending's big reveal. Applause at the end, which surprised me. The big takeaway, to me, is that the film's soft debut apparently doesn't mean the general audience is ceasing to like the brand.

Pete Koslow, a reformed criminal and former special operations soldier, is working under cover for crooked FBI handlers to infiltrate the Polish mob's drug trade in New York. In a final step toward freedom, Koslow must return to the one place he's fought so hard to leave, Bale Hill Prison, where his mission becomes a race against time when a drug deal goes wrong and threatens to identify him as a mole.

Three Seconds will release wide on August 17th.

From John Carter point of view maybe or the Lone Ranger.

Wait a minute -- Solo has basically grossed just about as much in its domestic OW as The Lone Ranger did in its domestic total. This is certainly not a flop on that kind of level. This is a mere disappointment compared to those films.
