Yep. Small-ish release, especially considering the fair bit of buzz it seems to be getting, not to mention marketing. I've seen more TV ads for this than anything this January.

Kinda surprised because you’re right it has strong reviews but that’s going to affect its OW unfortunately

Keyser is way better than Pulse though.

I love Keyser and all the data they provide! I love this thread in general and all the users who contribute to it.

Pulse was just personally helpful. Although not perfect. If there was a movie that I wanted to track, especially the smaller ones, I could use its data. Like I wanted to see how The Gentleman was doing and a movie like that was easier to track using pulse tracker versus locally where my theater doesn't put showtimes up until the Tuesday/Wednesday before release for a movie like it.

so apparently box office admissions slid to 1.24 billion in 2019 lowest since 2005.

If/ b.o admissions slide below 1 billion a year, is that when studios and or theatre chains start panicking? Just odd seeing such huge sales numbers and seeing that less people are spending more money to go to theatres.

Admission prices keep going up which make it seem like admissions are also on the rise but that's not the case. A lot of people just wait for movies to pop up online unless they're a "must see" movie so unless chains start cutting back on prices or give more affordable monthly plans, admissions will probably stagnate/keep falling.

    @Nova @JB33

imo 99% of people have no knowledge of the January dumping ground.

the most release-schedule knowledge most average people know, it seems to me, is - summer has blockbuster films, and winter (Nov - Jan) has awards films.

That hasn’t been my experience personally. Anecdotal of course but my core group of friends have caught on with the trends.

yes of course your personal life and family is the real success. but as hollywood people with big egos that are already VERY rich im sure she'd rather get a hit movie than 15m dollars. she (they) doesnt need money

i also heard ryan and scarlett divorced because he got jealous of her being more succesful so i hope thats not the reason blake barely works

Of course they want hit movies. I mean no one makes a movie hoping it’s poorly received or bombs. But I think if you’re going to last in this business you have to have thick skin and realize that some of the projects that you pick aren’t going to be successful. And as actors once they’re done shooting, they really have very little control unless of course they’re involved behind the scenes. Once the camera stops rolling, they have no control over the editing, marketing, release date etc. In a lot of ways the only thing they can do is give a strong performance. After that everything else is up to other people involved in the project. Which is why I doubt these people view their “success” based on how many hit movies they have or don’t have.

I have nothing to say regarding your last point cause I’m not someone who pays attention to celeb gossip. I hope it’s not true though.

  6. Streaming changed the game when they started paying actors millions of dollars up front to star in their movies and TV shows. Plus their TV shows and movies have started to enter the awards conversation as well. So as an actor/actress you get the best of both worlds (a big paycheck plus acclaim) without worrying about the box office results. There’s no shame in it and Im not surprised to see more bigger stars gravitate towards it.

Pretty much, yeah. Though is the whole January stigma known amongst the GA? I figured it was just us box office nerds.

None of my friends see the movies released in January because they “suck,” is a quote ive gotten several times over the years when asking to see a film with a January release.

I know, hey? It's like, okay it's a bust. Just release it and be done with it. Don't hold it back and analyze.

However, maybe this was always meant to release limited first. The box office sites do that a lot, they list certain movies as going wide when they end up releasing limited first. Sometimes the roll-out for a film is announced in a press release, usually for more prestigious projects like when 1917 and Just Mercy were announced to open limited at Christmas and go wide on January 10, but often times nobody knows. You can only take your best guess. In this case, Roadside Attractions has released smaller movies like this wide right off the bat before (Forever My Girl and I Can Only Imagine, both in 2018) so I can see why BOM or The Numbers would have expected this to be a wide release for the studio.

Now if it doesn't release at all, well fuck.

The audience scores for this aren’t bad on IMDB (7.8) so I’m not sure if this is going to get panned.

But in general I just don’t get the idea of moving a movie to January just to dump it. Like if the movie sucks, it’s going to die whether it’s released in January or released any other month. We see terrible (and I mean terrible) movies get released throughout the year and die at the box office. So why not just let these other movies die in their original release dates and release something good? Lol

It would be a shame if this movie ended up good but getting moved to January destroys any BO potential for it.

That's January for ya. It's where movies that studios have no faith in go to die quick deaths (unless you're an expanding Oscar contender).

Why don’t studios just let the movie die where it was originally intended to release? Not sure when the release date for this was but like just release it and let it die then? I feel like January has the potential to have better box office business but it’s really just become a grave yard for films. Shame.

Also this has a pretty notable cast and I literally had no idea about it until right now.
