Fair enough, if I'm being honest I'm not predicting 300m either simply because it's rare to have 2 good bond films in a row but I do think it's possible. One thing I will disagree with though, TDKR was most likely hitting around 500m without those shooting. Still would have fallen below TDK but I'd argue those shootings effected it's total gross by about 50m. Parents were refusing to let their kids see the film when that happened and I live in the UK. I imagine it was a similar case in the States.
If bond is a really good film though, 300m should happen.
I agree it is rare to have two good Bonds in a row, but the Bond team have upped their game and are very focused on creating quality products. Casino Royale really raised the bar very high, then Quantum of Solace may have fallen flat in terms of plot, but it was the nearest thing to an arthouse Bond movie, then Skyfall again raised the bar. So, I think the benchmark is Skyfall and Casino Royale. Quantum of Solace was a great effort, but you can see the producers are operating at a different level since Daniel Craig took on the role. Hopefully, they have learned the lessons of Quantum of Solace. With two out of the last three being among the best Bonds, I think there is a very good chance Spectre will again exceed expectations.

This will be the biggest Bond ever. $1.5 billion worldwide.

QOS cost $200m+ so I doubt Skyfall cost less than that.
Bond's budgets are now massive and keep growing in part because the producers fee for the Broccolis is included in it and just keeps getting bigger and bigger. They also get a % off the gross and of course there's MGM so Sony's profit isn't nearly equal as it would normally be for a tent pole this size. Even if it makes a $1b they might make less on it than the last Spider-man.
Edit: Wow docs say it's mid $300m's and they want $100m cut from it somewhere
Don't forget that Bond has a lot of prestige associated with it. A third of the budget will come from product placement sponsorship, possibly a lot more than that, given the success of the last movie.

I've seen 7 Bond films. I know they're all the same and they're all sexist. According to others, it's generally accepted that they are.
Exactly
I don't agree that the most recent Bond movies are sexist. There have been several strong female roles that have been more than one dimensional. Obviously M is a good example. Vesper is another. In the past, the Bond girls were often more decorative and more sexual objects than thinking women with personalities (example Live and Let Die and the Man with the Golden Gun), but I don't think that is the case now. Also Bond did slap women around (example, Diamonds Are Forever), but that was part of the character of Bond.He was as prepared to slap a woman across the face as he was to kill a man. He has slept with women to get information out of them and, of course, they can never resist him, but equally if he was a gay spy, he would sleep with men to get information. I don't think that would be sexist or homophobic. Yes, it is a prerequisite that a Bond women must be stunning to look at, but is it really sexist to celebrate the beauty of women on film?

Bond at the U.S. Adjusted according to BOM.
The question is if it will act like Thunderball after Goldfinger or act like You Only Live Twice after Thunderball (really not expecting a halve in admissions even if I do think it will drop). Was Skyfall the peak due to the convergence of the 50th anniversary, Olympics etc? O/S just keeps on expanding but Skyfall was so big how much more room for growth is there. Add to that the $ is now a lot stronger so exchange rates are less favorable.
Adjusted for Ticket Price Inflation

The worst thing about being born in the 20th Century as opposed to the 23rd century is that a person born three centuries later will have the chance to watch many, many more James Bond movies. I dread to think that many more Bond movies will be made after I die, that I will never be able to see.

Could we be looking at $200 million?

I'm very very disappointed with the Tammy number. What on earth are audiences liking about this movie? It's the stupidest film I have seen in decades.
Maybe you answered your own question there.

Edge of Tomorrow w/ estimate
Wednesday: 0.52
Thursday: +45% - 0.75
Friday: +35% - 1.01
Saturday: +50%
With those kind of numbers, $100m is looking a lot less likely.
-
Tammy is performing solely on the goodwill of McCarthy and her previous hits, but she's better than this movie. I hope it's a misstep and she'll bounce back with a better film next.
Have you seen the movie?

Tammy may be 21% RT, but it is also at 60% want to see it, and Identity Thief only got 19% RT and that made a tonne of money.

Another hit for the queen of comedy, Melissa McCarthy.
I don't know why she has so many haters, but in the last 18 months she has opened three out of three movies to numbers that most other A-listers can only dream of.

Come next weekend it will have already made $125m.
As I was saying.....

We will still be discussing the box office performance of gravity in ten years time.

A new opener, IMAX, no kids movie, jumping 10% on its first tuesday? That's just great.
I just wanted to compare it to "Skyfall" but that one had a very strange drop on tuesday, so it's pretty hard to find a good movie to compare. Maybe "Hunger Games", but that one came from a much bigger opening, so not convincing.
But really? What is the lowest, "Gravity" could go now? 32m next weekend, and that's the absolute worst case. That would bring it close to 110m, how would it not pass 160m easily then?
The question should be, how would it not easily pass $250m?
-
A movie does a little better than expected (on day 1, mind you), and fanboys go nuts. Happens over and over again.
Who are the "fanboys" for this movie? It is original material.

Wait for second weekend numbers before talking about 200 million, let alone 300.
Come next weekend it will have already made $125m.
-
Wait for Saturday numbers at least before talking about $300 million. I think the hype will make this movie frontloaded and this will end up doing much better in bigger markets,
I'm not seeing a lot of hype for this movie, other than incredible reviews.
-
I seriously wouldn't count 300m out if this nears 60m for OW. 5x multi is in the cards, imo.
Agreed there. If this opens to 60m with this level of WOM, 250m is almost a lock and 300m is very possible.

Once again I am blindsided by a Sandra Bullock movie. Not sure if she wins movie star of the year, or if that honor should go to Melissa McCarthy.

What backlash? Skyfall had great word-of-mouth. That is why its opening weekend was only 29% of total gross. It took nearly twice as much money as the two previous Bonds added together. Of course they wanted Mendes back because he made a movie that was loved by critics and audiences and made a ton of money.
