I don't think being backloaded has anything to do with the Covid situation. I'm from the Middle East and it's the same here. Respectable previews but the weekend is almost sold out through Sunday.

Even if it flops in China because of shut down theaters... They'll just re-release it at a later date. The original Avatar made like 70 million when there was a re-release

Grace Randolph has been saying for years that she hated Avatar 2009, and now she's raving about The Way Of Water......

The deciding thing will be the "Wow factor". If critics walk out of the premiere tomorrow and praise it for replicating the cinematic experience of the first one, we know that it will be a word of mouth monster. Then I think 700-800 million opening weekend is a lock.

"Avatar: The Way Of Water Just Out-Earned Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Entire worldwide Run In A Weekend"
Imagine that headline. The Internet will never recover.- 1

OW will be hurt due to World Cup Semis on THU and Final on SUN. Ranging for 0-20% impact over weekend in diff markets. Overall impact need to figure.
The world cup semis will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec 13 & 14).
Third place play-off, which frankly no one watches, is on Saturday (Dec 17)
The final is on Sunday (Dec 18)

Internet culture war is irrelevant to Avatar. These YouTubers are going to be surprised when it breaks a billion within a week despite their campaign against it.

It's laughable how backloaded these presales are across the opening weekend.
Why? It makes sense. It's a family movie. That's how most people remember it. People were dragging their family members to the theater back in 2009. -
A lot is said recently about VFX driving people to the theaters not being a factor anymore like in 2009 because you can't push it further, and oh boy....
The scene that was shown at the end of the re-release involving water... I've never seen anything like that and I'm a movie buff. General audiences are going to lose their minds. It'll have the exact same impact.

This is the one movie you'll can sit back and enjoy the ride instead of diving into reception from the Internet. The internet delivered a collective "Sigh" when the re-release was announced and yet it made $76M in 3 weeks.

So, around 28 million second weekend?

60%+ 2nd weekend drop here we go.
Don't be so sure. A healthy Thursday-Friday jump solves everything.- 1

So, Worldwide Shazam made 366M from a 159M opening weekend.
How much is Black Adam going to make from a 140M opening weekend worldwide? Let's assume there's no China release. -

Shazam made $16M overseas through Thursday, if I remember correctly. -

Batman Begins, the opening of one of the most beloved of superhero trilogies....
$150m Budget plus big marketing budget
$48m opening
$373 Worldwide total.
BA will beat that opening and likely that worldwide total despite not being a Batman movie.
The problem is that nowadays, every time a DC movie underperforms, comes an MCU movie to rub it in by grossing a billion. It's a constant reminder to WB executives and investors that these movies are not delivering.- 2

Sick source for those numbers btw.
Black adam was probably never touching 200m tbh so that fact that anyone took that article seriously is laughable.
The source is a company that works WITH Warner Bros. since 2020 called 'Cinelytic'.
Conflict of interests I'd say to put those numbers out.

Wow, I forgot Shazam had $3.3M special Fandango previews before its opening Thursday. -
So... no site is going to bother and report Wednesday overseas gross? Deadline or Forbes usually do it.
-
I'm guessing.... 300 million overseas with those initial numbers coming in (If there's a China release).

I've seen people go as far to say it'll open under 50M just because of Rotten Tomatoes like 20M worth of tickets just disappear because of an online rating system 😅

i wish i could love literally every movie as much as erik davis does, truly.
These people are handpicked to hype the movie. That's why I worry. If some of those people are saying bad things, imagine the likes of David Ehrlich getting their hands on it. -
Is the bump in sales for Black Adam over the last 24 hours considered big?
-
The bad reactions to it are really bad. Rotten Tomatoes score isn't going to be good imo

People sometimes fail to understand how big the World Cup is in most of the world. It's a terrible week to open in.
