But my goodness, the amount of money David Heyman made on Potter and FB must have been fucking ridiculous. Plus Gravity and the Paddington films.

David Heyman is masterful at branding. Notice his choice of words in interviews. For him it's always about finding the truth and sincerity in the material and characters. And he's effectively sold the notion that his production teams are like a big happy family. There's a reason he is as successful as he is.

Just get a damn new director - this series is too expansive to have had the SAME DIRECTOR FOR FIFTEEN YEARS.

I always admired Heyman for his inspired choices for directors in the HP series, but he has became far too comfortable working with only people he's been working with for the last fifteen years. He could even give Paul King, who he has worked with on the Paddington series, a chance to direct Potter.

Don't think he will get much jobs..

I'm sure he has been offered a lot of projects in the past he has declined. All the studio executives would care about is his resume of highly profitable blockbusters. On the other hand he's not an unknown director anymore such as the directors Marvel often hire these days, so he would probably getting offers primarily from WB.

how well Rowling and Kloves particularly weaved the beasts lore into the wider war.

She made it unnecessarily difficult for herself from the initial premise she created in merging Newt's story with Dumbledore/Grindelwald's, but it's too late to change that now. It worked out okay in the first film, but she didn't strike the right balance in the second. From the early reactions on Secrets of Dumbledore it seems Rowling and Kloves got it right this time, probably thanks to Kloves' input.

I do hope I will feel as enthusiastic about the movie as these guys, but the previous two left me barely satisfied, with the first one still being decent enough and the second great in parts, but underwhelming as a whole. I look forward to the day I find a Fantastic Beasts movie... fantastic (sorry about the pun, but I blame the world premiere from London where everyone but Fogler had a fantastic evening).

2 Soundtracks have been released on YouTube. I gave this a listen and i think it sounds really good. Howard delivering the goods once again it seems.

Instantly forgettable to my ears, although it's only two tracks. But even if the soundtrack as a whole is less memorable than CoG (the music was one of the best aspects of the film), I am still confident SoD will be a lot better in most other aspects.

Crimes, strangely, is actually a film about Leta Lestrange. The best character who got killed in the end lol.

Yeah she does get a redemption arc of sorts, but then you have another character hunting down Credence to avenge his father, Newt deciding to pick a side, Nagini coming to terms with her blood curse (off screen), Queenie's journey for equal marriage rights for muggles to marry wizards and so many other stories packed in there. Allow me to remedy my own statement: Crimes does have a lot of themes, but they don't tie together elegantly at all into one overarching theme that the audience can sense that, "ah so that's what it really is about."

Crimes of Grindelwald, I will say, always had the most interesting ideas of any of the WW films but was so haphazardly and schizophrenically stitched together that it ended up muddling so many great ideas that had so much potential (Queenie, etc).

Yeah, that's true. Good ideas, but muddled storytelling and I'm not sure it had an overarching theme that unified all the subplots. I mean, that's probably why it's so difficult to explain what the movie is about shortly to anyone who hasn't seen it.

  9. Continuing on my rewatch, I think CoG actually has a lot of style in its directing (well except it's too messy in the circus action scenes making it hard to follow the action). But a scene where the style suits the material perfectly is when Queenie is looking for Jacob in the rain, utilizing sound and close ups to get into her head. Not to mention that haunting overhead shot of an umbrella approaching her.

Overall the film has engaging ideas and concepts, it's fast-paced, the music is atmospheric, but it's just far too muddled and overcomplicated for its own good. I even contemplated cutting out a couple of characters and scenes while watching it, if it would have affected the narrative at all? If they can fix that for SoD and simplify the storytelling a bit while keeping up the stylistic choices, I think it can be quite enjoyable. It should be akin to Spider-Man: No Way Home (and I'm saying this as someone who did not enjoy the second one, nor much of a Marvel fan in general); it had a complicated premise told in a simple, understandable way with a real emotional core.

Getting David Yates back was their first big mistake. It's a new franchise, take a risk and go with someone who has a fresh vision.

You know, upon rewatching this yesterday, I found it had a lot of charm and probably even more everyday magical background and foreground elements than all of Yates' prior Potter films. The earlier scenes at the bank seemed inspired by older slapstick comedies, combined with deadpan comedic delivery in the shot compositions. The world building as a whole is great as well, but at some points it feels almost excessive, as if they realized they needed to compensate for the film having a far less engaging story than Potter.

The darker, more intense scenes, however, are more similar in tone to Yates' Potter films. Tonally it's obviously a bit of a strange mashup, and one of the biggest faults of the film, but that's how the script is written, so I'd say Yates delivered on what the script asked for.

However I will agree that when the foundation of the series was laid the producers could have taken a slight risk by hiring a new director.

They still haven't given a decent explanation why he's working with Dumbledore.

They sort of explained it, but it was in a deleted scene lol.

Nonetheless I find it implied with the plot twist in CoG that Dumbledore wanted Newt to get involved with the obscurus in the first film due to his prior experiences on the matter, as well as his empathy for all kind of misunderstood beasts. Dumbledore must have suspected the mass destruction in NY came from an obscurus, possibly even Credence, but evidently he didn't tell Newt directly. And we know Dumbledore can't face Grindelwald himself, but he probably knew Grindelwald might be interested in the obscurus and may have hoped Newt would stop his attempts to get his hands on it.
