I'm not sure if there will be a movie that open around $50-60M and misses $100M DOM. Paranormal Activity 3 came close, but that film still made over $104M.

I will never forget Watchmen opening to 55M and just barely cracking 100M DOM with a final gross of 107M. A hyped/awaited film that is actually horsesh*t quality-wise could open to 60M and fail to crack 100M i think.

    Spoiler

Side note, i actually like Watchmen. Its Snyders only good film imo

  2. I know a lot of Pixar loonies (one of them even likes Cars 2!) and none of them went to see this. The main reason was the difference in animation of the nature and landscapes (which were amazing) and the dinosaurs. They looked incredibly fake in a weird way. I think that turned some people off and the fact, that nothing about the story was in any way interesting or fresh, judging by the trailers. It was the first time that Pixars Marketing team failed big time.

I saw the movie a few months ago and it was solid. It just pales in comparison with other Pixar masterpieces. Unlike them, this film will be forgotten.

The Thing is an excellent example for building tension. From the first minute, you are just IN this movie. The music, the setting and the characters just fit and that is something not every Carpenter movie can say of itself. The effects are still stunning and its downright hilarious how bad the CGI effects from the 2011 movie are compared to this masterpiece.

Aliens is an incredible interesting movie. The first hour basically nothing really happens. Sure, there are character introductions, the setting and mystery is established and the Vietnam allegory is more than obvious, but the film for me kicks off with the failure of the operation. But i cant help it or me, its all just so entertaining. Cameron just has a way to make movies entertaining no matter how long they are. Aliens has some great action, but the focus is on Ripley and her evolution from survivor to heroine - now thats how you make a fantastic female protagonist! Weaver was already great in the first one, but nearly all of her most memorable moments are from this movie. The only small downside is that even tough i have a very good Blu-Ray version of this film, the effects show some age and some of the sets are reminiscent of the Star Trek TV Show in the 60s which is actually not really a negative, it adds to the charme. All in all, this is one of the best movies of teh 80s and for me the second best sequel of all time after T2.

  5. Sci-Fi-Horror Week for me

    #1: Alien

I love this movie. But i feel that i would like it even more if i found this film to be actually scary. Because its not. Its just very suspensfull. Ridley Scotts second best movie (imo) creates its own unique world, establishes different, interesting and likable characters and shows of great visuals in the first half - and the title star has not even appeared. I dont care if they showed the Alien for only 4 Min because the suit looked terrible or the budget was too small for more alien scenes - the moments when we dont see the alien but we know it is somewhere and could attack at any moment make this movie stand above your typical monster movie. Granted, its not as rewatchable as its (first) sequel and some scenes could have been a tad shorter but this will stand the test of time as one of the best SciFi Movies of all time.

    BATB just passed TTT worldwide.

Side note, but that shows hos insanely succesfull the LotR trilogy was Worldwide. To make these near-billion grosses with the first two films and then to pass that mark easily with the third film in the early 2000s is just massive. Same for the HP movies, all of them (except maxbe the third?) would have made a billion in todays money.

  7. Watched this and the 2005 one with a friend the other day for comparisons sake. Altough im a bit nostalgic about the 2005 one (i know, i know, im a bit younger than some of you :P), the original is clearly the better film. A perfect Wonka, Wilder mixes kindness and humour with some truly dark moments of kinda murderous proportions and im a sucker for dark british humour so theres that. Charlie is a bit annoying but at least hes a real child and not the Jesus from the 2005 one. The other kids were solid, but Veruca is scene-stealing, a great performance.

The Movie has clearly aged, but that adds to the charm and the loacations are kinda timeless. Its just a charming and entertaining story altough you can equally see it as a childrens moral story with a lot of humour or a seriously dark tale. I appreciate both versions.

For all the spectacle, it also doesn't really offer anything new. You sit there reminded of other, better movies.

And this is coming from someone who generally liked it more than most.

The trailers reminded me of Blade Runner. The visuals seemed to be great. Problem is, i then wanted to see Blade Runner and not GitS
