if Captain Marvel goes for #2, has there ever been a franchise with #1 and #2 in weekly BO?
-
Let's compare Alita with Ghost in the Shell, shall we? How much did GitS make in Japan?
-
8/100 at Metacritic. The worst Metacritic score ever for animated movies.

This might turn out to be the next Norm of The North in terms of reviews.
I predict that the RT score will be almost the same as Cars 2.

Hi Kevin, the Tuesday spot for Valerian was just from previews. Its first day is today. Hard to tell from previews if this is good or not, but we should know by end of today how much it did from its first showings in Paris. Around 6 hours from now we will know.
Nice! Thanks for the info!

Sorry that I don't follow the French box office very much, but is that a good position for Valerian prior to the release on Wed?

Im sorry but I have no fucking idea how this movie is non american and french in anyway. Star Wars has a less American cast in this. Wtf you cast to american leads, and Rihanna. Honestly how is this different. The story was typical big budget Sci Fi
I think casting French actors and actresses wouldn't help the movie obtain much money.

That settle that one.
Guillermo del Toro on Pacific Rim then ? That had a rumored 190m net budget.
Wait! So, do you think that 225m is still gross budget? If you say that, then it might be between 200m-210m net budget, but it still beats the Pacific Rim's net budget.

James Wan Fast 7 ?
Fast 7 has $190mil budget. Valerian's budget is higher.

197 million euros budget means $225 million!!
Does this mean that Valerian becomes the most expensive film by a non-Anglosphere director?

Fox wanted Jen too. The movie was greenlit because of Jen. In those circumstances it is hard to say someone else should have gotten the role. And Russel altered the script so Joy never went to college, whereas the real Joy did and didn't get married etc until after that. It wasn't strictly following Joy's story, including on her age. Regardless, I was just reacting to your consistent use of Jen as your sole example. It is obvious to anyone that the disparity you are talking about exists. And every veteran big name actress I know of except Meryl Streep benefited when they were younger (a short window) and suffered from it ever after. Maybe Helen Mirren.
Can I add Maggie Smith and Judi Dench on that list? I have no idea that Maggie Smith was nominated for the Oscars in the 60s and 70s. All I know is that she's Professor McGonagall.
Judi Dench should also be included. She's TV actress in the 70s before she became a star in the Bond movies.

That Handmaiden opening is indeed great. When was the last time a non-English language film got in to the top 5?
There's a Polish film who got into the top 5 in December 2016.

The movie with the highest RT score that Luc Besson directed is this badass action film:
Damn! Even the actress who plays the main character is more badass than Angelina Jolie and Milla Jovovich combined!

Woah! Going in style had a huge jump at my theatre today! 11M+ here vs 8.2M Friday. I'm thinking the "old people" genre as a whole might have to be readjusted to how I calculate my numbers. If I use the "new system" (I can't decide which I'm going to stick with because they both seem to work depending on Genre) it would be a 5.1M Friday and a 6.8 Saturday. All this really means is that it's really over performing
Also lol I had a customer (really friendly regular I love this guy) compare Ghost in the Shell to Blade Runner today. Not in terms of what it was about or visuals, but how good the movie is and "potential to be a future Classic" I'm just glad some people are able to enjoy it
Well, the director of the original animation of Ghost in the Shell said that his movie's style was influenced by Blade Runner (I'm talking about the 1995 original animation), but he wanted to make a different story.

My point was the American title was changed to Case Closed. (I don't know where you are from, but I was under the impression it was Case Closed in the UK.)
My larger point was that Detective Conan is very obscure. Case Closed a touch less obscure. It wasn't even able to garner enough interest in a dub to last a bit over 100 episodes, while One Piece or Fairy Tail flew past that mark. Add on that even Viz had to slow down the manga translation due to sales.
Conan is just popular in anime circles, but no where else.
Also, I love anime nerds talking about love action anime and yet keep citing the same three movies over and over again, like those are the only live action adaptations of anime/manga ever made.
Oh yeah! I know that the Western version is called Case Closed. Sorry!

If you're calling it Detective Conan, then you certainly know more about it than 99% of the US.
I'm not an American. My friends and I know more about Conan since we bought its comic books when I was 7.

Hi @Olive, any buzz for GitS in Japan? The movie will come out on Friday.

Considering how bad Attack on Titan live action was, I think it's safe to say Japan tanks its own animes in live action adaptations quite frequently. Shin Godzilla was an absolute best case scenario and miracle for 2010s JP genre film.
Shin Godzilla is one of the movies from the Godzilla franchise and in Japan, its franchise started from 1954 and kept on releasing similar movies in which Godzilla battles against any forms of giants like Mechagodzilla, Space Godzilla, etc. So, Godzilla franchise is not based on anime.

Attack on Titan live action movie was laughably bad, that's what happened when you don't have the money for good effects and hire models to play the characters. That's a Japan move industry problem in general.
Don't forget Japan will release the live-action movie of Fullmetal Alchemist in December 2017. Here's the trailer:

Anime turned into live action movies are cursed, look at Dragonball one of the biggest anime brands around, just like video game turned into movies are cursed.
Rurouni Kenshin is the only one decent live-action movie based on anime.
And yeah! Even Japan struggles to adapt its own anime into live-action movies.
