Okay and? That's kinda what makes it obscure: that the average person doesn't know about it.

I'd say the average person is familiar with Pokemon, Dragonball Z, maybe Naruto. I could maybe see an argument for One Piece.

But just because there's very few anime that's not obscure doesn't mean that GITS isn't obscure just because it's well known in the anime circles.

Detective Conan, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter, Gundam. I only know about that.

I always like how shocked some people are when they find out that Anime is niche in Japan. Another thing that throws some fans off guard is the cost of actually buying anime over there. I used to know a kid that was such a fanboy he took up Japanese lessons just to import games and anime dvds early (it's good skill to have anyway, but that was pretty much the biggest reason). He finally took a trip to Japan and came back with nothing. He finally found out the high prices for imports online isn't due to import fees, and that one season of a show cost about £250. He coulda got the same bloody thing over here for £20 if he just waited a couple of months. Turns out the UK is the cheapest place to buy Anime on earth.

My goodness, that's so expensive as heck!!

Even a season of The Walking Dead costs only $15 in Amazon.

You get the odd movie that breaks out there, but for the most part, these are annual franchise movies like Pokemon, Doraemon and Detective Conan, that have been going on for years.

Most of the anime that the community enjoys seasonally is restricted to late night airing on TV, because there isn't an audience to justify showing it during prime time.

How about if there's a comparison between this niche anime thing in Japan and the popularity of American TV Series that are mostly aired in US during prime time? Are the TV series also considered niche as well?? Sorry, but I've never paid attention to the American television and their prime time programs, so I think there might be some correlation between the anime popularity in Japan and TV Series in the United States.

If you pay attention to Japanese culture in the slightest, you would know that in a day to day sense, anime is niche. Most shows are watched by comparatively few people outside of the big stuff like Dragonball Super and One Piece.

Hmmmm.. Can you explain more specific that "anime in Japan is niche in a daily sense"?

Yokai Watch is huge in Japan. I'm not surprised that almost happened at all

Yeah! I don't understand how anime is a niche thing in Japan.

Pokemon, Doraemon, Case Closed (Detective Conan), One Piece, Dragon Ball. Even some animes like Love Live!, Yo-Kai Watch, Death Note, Lupin, Hunter x Hunter are the most popular and their anime movies did really good in Japan.

I think the ¥5bn that the Second Assassination Classroom movie did in Japan last year invalidates that, and the first Attack on Titan movie in 2015 did pretty well too. Anime in general is a niche thing anyway, even in Japan.

There was definitely a way to make this movie work, but they just went the wrong way about doing this from day 1.

15 of 100 highest-grossing movies in Japan are anime movies.

9 of 50 highest-grossing movies in Japan last year are anime movies.

Spirited Away is the highest-grossing movie in Japan.

Even a random anime film like Yo-Kai Watch almost beat SW:TFA in Japan in 2014.

But most of the highest-grossing anime movies are distributed by Studio Ghibli, so I don't know whether this is bad news or not.

if a movie takes place in japan, has an all japnesse cast why would you film it in english with Japanese american actors? if I was in japan why I want to see that? Japan has 400 local films a year, I'm sure they would rather see thier HOME country do that version.

Do americans wanna see a movie made with white poeple from Japan taking place in america where everyone speaks Japanese? Would that sell? If america is going to make it, why not make it american

Also unlike movies in Japan, this movie isn't for Japan, its for the world. So why not make a world cast? Not to mention Scar is just the biggest female box office star

Yeah, I wonder what Japanese people will react if there will be a live-action adaptation of Pokemon or Case Closed (Detective Conan) or the Studio Ghibli's movies. Remember that these movies are more publicly well-known than GitS.

  8. The 1995 original animation of GitS was just a cult film rather than a huge box office hit. See my post below about the box office performance of the animation in the year 1995 when it's released. It turns out that the animation is not anywhere in the top 10. The same goes to the critically-acclaimed animes like Paprika, or Perfect Blue. These movies are not hugely popular, but become well-known among fans. That's why they are the examples of cult classics.

However, I wonder what if the Japanese public would react if there will be an American adaptation of Doraemon, Case Closed (Detective Conan), One Piece, Pokemon, Dragon Ball, or some Hayao Miyazaki's movies. These movies are famous not only by their fans, but also the audience.

Man didn't realize GITS is ScarJo's first rotten movie on RT since He's Just Not That Into You. Still looking forward to checking it out. Haven't been to the theaters since Kong and I feel like I'm the only person on Earth who had no interest in BATB.

She's a supporting character in He's Just Not That Into You. If I only count the main characters that she has played, GitS is her first rotten movie on RT since the Nanny Diaries. And Nanny Diaries was released in 2007.

Inspiring the Matrix doesn't make you...The Matrix.  I mean, being the sequel to the Matrix isn't necessarily going to do that either.  Well, ok, being the second sequel to The Matrix doesn't at least.

The same goes to the 2002 sequel of the original GitS. The sequel is less better than the original.

I start to wonder whether Blade Runner 2049 would have this kind of case.

It's no comparison between a japanese anime film and one of Disney's biggest animated juggernauts. Look at the box office numbers. Ghost in the Shell (1995) made 2.3 million dollars worldwide and Beauty and the Beast (1991) made 425 million. So there's just no comparison.

As far as I know, we had the first 3 Pokemon movies and the Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films that are considered huge, popular anime films in the US. GitS is nowhere near as popular as them. So, yeah no comparison!

It's certainly influential but it's an obscure property for the general audience. I was surprised to even hear from the likes of people at Collider, that they haven't seen the original film

Remember that when the original animation was released, GitS was a cult film rather than a huge box office hit. It is nowhere near as popular as other animes such as Pokemon, Dragon Ball, or One Piece.

Look at my post below. The original animation did not reach the top 10 box office 1995 in Japan although it's a Japanese animation.

So it looks like it's going to be a three way battle between China, The UK and Japan for the biggest OS market (all are currently predicted or projected to make about $90m). Should be interesting.

Will France be included as well? I say this because the story is set in France and there might be chance that France will follow the battle between those 3 countries..

1B is pretty much locked. Real question is can it beat DH2 WW for Watson highest grossing movie ever?

    Let's see:

    DH2:

    $124m in Japan

    $117m in UK

    $78m in Germany

    $67m in France

BatB has just opened in Germany, but it's very lower than DH2's German opening.

It also depends the box office performance in Japan, so yeah it's too early to tell.
