  1. I do agree that it’s a ridiculous overreaction from Disney and they’re punishing a journalist who had nothing to do with the Anaheim piece. Why not sue if it’s non-factual? I hope they reconsider their stance on this, because the issue will just continue to grow the longer they do nothing. Most people wouldn’t even know about the article if they hadn’t banned the LA Times from screenings.

  2. I doubt a sale will happen unless Fox is in a really desperate situation. But just going off Twitter, I find it interesting that while most discussions are on the comic books, there’s also interest in Eragon remakes. Even Christopher Paolini tweeted about it. It’d be great to see another Eragon movie, though I did like parts of the first one. If they can bring back Chronicles of Narnia movies, Eragon should get a remake. Fox could do it...but if they won’t, they should allow someone else to.

Of course, like New Line. I bet that Deadpool would be the only X-Men franchise making the jump to the MCU. People thinking this has developed overnight are fooling themselves. This goes way back, since Deadpool days and they literally using a freaking Helicarrier at the end of that film. It's going to go down and they are in some kind of power struggle, but I don't understand about what. This is a very advanced talks kind of thing, and it's not recent.

I don’t think Deadpool should be in the MCU. I loved Deadpool and X-men was my intro to superhero movies, but I’m totally fine with these franchises staying separate. I guess except for the one currently without a movie franchise at the moment (F4), which I don’t have any attachment to so not bothered if people think it’s best being incorporated into the MCU.

Great animated movies can make crap numbers...maybe not Pixar, but then again, Kubo should have won an Oscar and made $48M DOM.  It was a boy, with an instrument, which told a very sad story with a redeeming ending...The Book of Life made $50M DOM...so, yes, lots going for Coco, and the Pixar name being by far the hugest, hugest thing b/c of the way Disney fans are...but I wouldn't say "proven" when previous great movies in the same vein have disappointed...

A movie can do well south of the US and still crash and burn here (Ice Age 5)...the US market does not march in lock step with other markets...

You think Coco will only make $50m DOM? Or that The Star will make $100m+? You can list the similarities between Coco, Kubo and BoL, but that doesn’t mean they’re the same movies. The Pixar name isn’t why I’m interested in this movie, the story and animation is why. Coco gives me an Inside Out vibe, and no I'm not saying it’ll do as well as Inside Out. I just think it’ll do really well with families while The Star seems more niche.

I hope there are no more Thor movies.  I've come to terms with the fact that none of them are interesting to me.  The only reason I thought Ragnarok would be any different is they show off their greatest assets in the trailers and most scenes that aren't hinted at in them are generally pretty fucking weak (save for a few exceptions)

I could say I hope there are no more Transformers movies, since I find them largely uninteresting, but I won’t because no one makes me watch them. For those of us who actually like certain movies in the Thor franchise, I’ll say I hope there are more movies and that they’re directed by Taika. Humor is subjective after all and I felt that his style of humor was a big reason it landed for me.

    Wow, Mojo says $121 million.

The buzz just kept building for this, a month ago it seemed like a $90m opening was more likely. Maybe the Tomatometer mattered?

I think it had an impact. I’ve been excited for this movie for a while and if it had gotten a meh or bad reception (not just from critics but from fans or audiences), I’d still see it, but I might’ve waited for the second or third week instead of seeing it OW.

Sunday drops have been good lately with mostly upward revisions and the weather is pretty miserable on the east coast which could drive people to the theater more than usual.  Also 600k+ moviepass subscribers out there now...as an aside I wonder if hardcore fans will use moviepass to really drive numbers up..for example getting a ticket for JL every single day

I think some have been doing things like that for reward points. It seems moviepass has altered their TOS though and reserve the right to charge a penalty or suspend the account if they feel the subscription is being abused.

RT scores for Marvel movies are a result of payola and shading dealings.

Yes, I do think Disney is wrong to block a publication from reviewing their movies, especially for such political reasons. From what I’ve read, it’s Bob Iger’s political ambitions that has them upset at how LA Times covered their relationship with the Anaheim government.

But how does this prove anything about Marvel movie RT scores? It’s one publication, and they couldn’t even see the movie to give it a rating, that for all Disney knows could’ve been positive. Also, it’s not like they won’t see the movie and write a review, they were not invited to the screening (still very wrong though). Has something like this happened for the other Marvel movies? I don’t remember any news about Disney blocking critics from screening The Avengers or GotG...

How about Blade Runner and Ninjango?

This feels more like when Mockingjay was coming out and some commented there was less buzz and marketing - it was assumed it would eventually just build and then do about $160m like the previous one.

The fact that Mockingjay was a part 1 might’ve dampened excitement for the movie. And it also wasn’t as good as CF. Justice League seems like it’ll get a better reception and will be an improvement over BvS.

I am so sorry for your loss

  11. Loved it! Exceeded expectations and will definitely rewatch. Might be tied with SMHC for my favorite MCU movie this year. And is definitely top 5. I’ve always kind of liked Thor as a character, though TDW was all kinds of boringness. This movie, however, allowed Thor to grow and feel more relatable. He saw and lost his father, found out about the family secret. He lost his hammer and realized the power has been in him the whole time. He found and accepted his brother for who he is. Finally accepted his birthright as King of Asgard. Just so much growth in one character that I didn’t really think much of.  Valkyrie was awesome! Korg! Hulk/Banner dynamic was interesting and I’m definitely looking forward to having that explored more in future movies. While he was a supporting character, I don’t think he or anyone overshadowed Thor as the main character. Hemidall was good too, could’ve been utilized more. Even Skurge had an arc that was pretty good. The two negatives were it needed more Hela. I get that time constraints and keeping the focus on the heroes is important, but she was great in the scenes she had and I wanted more. Also, the 1st act was weaker in terms of pacing. A

  12. Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but Thor Ragnarok will open in 4,080 theaters.

‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ ‘Bad Moms Christmas’ to Spark a Lackluster Box Office

    Quote

Tracking for the third Thor movie has remained impressive since numbers came out last week with the latest forecasts in the $100 million to $118 million range for its launch weekend at 4,080 locations for the Friday-Sunday period. The rollout includes 3,400 3D screens, 391 Imax screens, 616 premium large format screens, and 204 D-Box locations.

A Bad Moms Christmas” is getting a two-day jump on Thor with an opening on Wednesday at 3,615 North American sites with projections in the $23 million to $35 million range for the Wednesday-Sunday period. The “Bad Moms” sequel was produced for $28 million with Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn returning as under-appreciated and over-burdened women — with their mothers, played by Cheryl Hines, Christine Baranski, and Susan Sarandon, showing up unexpectedly for the Christmas season.

  13. So I finally found time to watch this and it was pretty great. I haven’t watched the original or any of the shorts, but it was pretty easy to follow/understand. It was beautiful to watch on the big screen. I did start wondering when it would end when it got to around the 2 hour mark and I started yawning. While I think it would’ve been fine with a shorter runtime, it was kinda nice to be able to reflect on each scene as they happened and not have things happening too fast. Ryan Gosling was great (he has really pretty hands) and that scene when he found out he wasn’t the child...that hurt. There were obvious clues he wasn’t the child, especially when she cried over the memory, but it was still a great scene. I was surprised by how emotional I got during some scenes since I kept reading that this is a long cerebral movie. Jared Leto’s character was the only one I felt was unnecessary. Overall great and a movie I’ll probably rewatch. A
