That said, $500 million is still not a good showing for a movie in the Harry Potter franchise, and definitely wouldn't bode well for said franchise's long-term viability.
Warner made a mistake thinking that a few spin-offs with new characters except Dumbledore and Grindelwald and scripts written without a plot in the books would be what the fandom wanted, the franchise still sells very well but we don't want to see random wizards and magical creatures. We want Tom Riddle or the Marauders if they wanted to do something many years before Harry

In 1994 Wynona Ryder was coming off a run of Beetlejuice, Heathers, Edward Scissorhands, Dracula and the Age of Innocence. All in the previous 5 years. That is an A Lister.
Ronan and Pugh may be better actresses and they may, hopefully will, become bigger names. But comparing Ronan and Pugh now with Ryder then in terms of marketing is just....no.
And contrary to what twitter may tell you, there were just as many feminists in the 90s, being just as relevant, as there are today.
And Terminator, Addams Family and X Men don't have beloved source material?
Perhaps the beat comparison for this movie is the 2005 Pride and Prejudice. Another adaptation of a popular classic featuring some up and comers but which nobody really asked for. This has relatively outperformed that by some margin.
You can think whatever you want, i don't need to make comparations between actresses and other movies to make a point. If you want to think that LW wasn't one of the most anticipated movies of 2019 it's okay, i know what i saw and read since the movie was announced in 2018

Little Women will have outgrossed a Terminator film, an Addams Family film, a Winnie The Pooh film, a Charlies Angels film and an X Men film. Those properties were all big in the 90s too.
It will finish with roughly the same adjusted gross as the 90s version - which featured a much more established box office draw in the lead (Ryder was a full A lister), in a far more competitive market, having been successfully released abroad which the 90s movie wasn't making the movie more profitable overall
A domestic period drama is not the same sell now as it was in the 90s. At that time you could sell period as opulence and spectacle - no chance of doing that now.
That this version improved financially over last one given how many advantages that had over this....yeah, its a pretty impressive achievement.

"Many advantages that had over this" Now we are living in the era of the social media, this movie had huge hype there since the trailer came out, the cast is A-list for the most part, Emma Watson and Timothée have promote it to their huge number of followers on Instagram and Twitter and the cast did a worldwide promo also Saoirse and Florence had Oscar buzz since the first screenings. The fanbase now is bigger than 25 years ago so i don't know what advantages are you talking about, it's a very good film with great reviews and a feminist take which right now is more relevant. Please don't compare it to those box office flops because their source material isn't beloved like the LW book

Actually, its performance has been awesome considering its Oscar buzz hasn't been that big. It will crack $100m and it may happen by Oscar night.
LOL what? So you are saying that a movie nominated for 6 Oscars including BP with an Oscar nominated female director and Oscar nominated/winner cast and crew hasn't great Oscar buzz? Also it's funny how a few people here talk about LW like it hadn't a big fanbase in USA so crossing $100m with that fanbase + Oscar nominations is not a surprise to anyone. The 1994 version grossed $50m without inflation

Awesome movie, the lead character is like Jesus in WWI and that scene near the end WOW. I see this movie winning a lot of Oscars

Ana De Armas might just be a rising star.
She is, she's the new rising star in Hollywood along with Florence Pugh. Now she's going to play Marilyn Monroe in a biopic and in Spain we are very proud of her because she has dual nacionality

Sorry can't hear you over all the...
LOL that girl Andrea is obsessed with her, she is in Awardsworthy forum trying to prove she's the best young actress and a megastar to anyone who disagrees with her on the Little Women thread. It's very scary and she hasn't posted this reviews
This was why the little bitches who focused on one or two tweets saying that Watson was the weakest really needed to shut the fuck up when it came to actual publications. The last two reviews have basically stated that Pugh is the best but the entire cast is excellent.
I mean
A few line readings fall flat — whenever Watson slips out of her American accent, all bets are off
Among the large cast, Watson somewhat fades into the background
I won’t go through all the other players in the ensemble, but most of them inhabit their roles with just the right pep and insight. (Only Watson, as dour eldest sister Meg, runs into some flatness.)
And while Meg gets a few good scenes, she’s still under-served compared with her younger sisters.

then why are you complaining that the conversation shifted to Watson? And for the record, I'm no one's stan. I don't care for actors careers. They are all overpaid for what's essentially a team work that they take sole credit for. I simply pointed out that working with Gerwig is good for Watson resume and that Meg was not an awards role anyway, but if you disagree by all means give arguments instead of playing "stan" card.
LOL ok

But you said it yourself. We Watson stans are something else and since we are Watson stans why should we focus on other actresses? Now the real question is, why Florence and Luminuous Sersh stans are focusing on Emma Watson? Eh?
I don't see Florence and Saoirse stans focusing on her mate, they are just happy that both of them are getting rave reviews and their Oscar nominations are very likely, especially Saoirse

It's a win because she has Gerwig on her resume and if she behaved well on the set she'd get references and more work. It's not all about reviews for otherwise some really big stars wouldn't even work considering how much beating their movies and performances get or used to. She's still under 30 and could bounce back like Kstew and RPattz with their indies, arguably actors who received more critical beating than Watson.
Also, Meg was always a background character. The story is focused on Jo first and foremost (Louisa May Alcott's self insert) and then Amy and Laurie with aunty being most memorable of background characters. I'm not surprised that Stone dropped out. She probably found a good excuse (scheduling conflict or similar) but Meg March really isn't a role that stars and awards are made of. However, resume is a big deal and Watson has Gerwig on it which many actresses around her age don't.
Jeez the Watson stans here are something else....why are you focusing on her when the reviews are so good for everyone BUT her and Eliza? When a movie is universally praised like this one you should focus on the standouts (Saoirse and Florence) and if this cast wins the SAG award (which i highly doubt) the win would be for EVERYONE, not just one actress . Also i'm sorry but she isn't doing indies anytime soon unless they have big names attached, i follow her career since HP and her MO is only doing movies with a famous director or a prestigious cast and she turns 30 in 5 months, she cannot play the innocent bookworm girl anymore PS: her casting was a last minute decision by Amy Pascal, the producer when Emma Stone dropped out

The long-shot gimmick already makes the movie worse than Dunkirk though. And at this point, every movie is a frontrunner for BP lmao.
That's your opinion, the long-shot is getting a lot of praise and other Oscar-bait movies are getting more mixed reviews. Anyway Mendes and Nolan are both great

I'm interested, but this movie will show Nolan's power at the BO. This film will do peanuts compared to Dunkirk
Nolan is my favorite director but this movie will be better than Dunkirk also many people are saying this is the frontrunner for BP this year

This was really good and funny, but I'm not surprised it is flopping. Cinema is a dead zone and I'm waiting for the next technology which will replace current cinema. If streaming is the future, I think they can to do better than its current system.
It's not that deep, i think people is getting tired of reboots and sequels in general, look at Terminator, MIB or Dark Phoenix. Movies like Parasite, Rocketman and OUATIH show that when a movie is good people will see it on cinemas but Sony doesn't attract massive audience besides Spider-Man and Jumanji. That's why i think Little Women won't be a big hit even with Oscar buzz...it's another remake and the competition late-December is insane

being 100th remake really sunk A Star is Born. What a boxoffice, critical and awards flop.
A Star is Born was a remake yes but it was a modern version, with one of the most popular singers as the lead actress and it was a really good movie that's why it had lots of acclaim in Venice,TIFF etc.

A twenty five year old film is not fresh in anyone's mind unless it's some undisputed classic of cinema.
It's a classic and you can read the comments below the trailer online to see that many people are saying they love that version and this one can't be better

It should do great cause it's a great counter-programming.
I think you're overstimating the appeal of Little Women. Yeah the book is a classic and the trailer doesn't look bad but it has eight adaptations, the 1994 movie is still very fresh in people's minds and it's near perfect also if it was that good Sony would show it at fall festivals to gain strong awards buzz. Tbh i don't think it will flop but it won't be a huge hit either. The only recent massive hit from Sony is Spider-Man Far From Home and Little Women will compete with Star Wars IX and Jumanji 2

I finally saw this movie today and it's pretty DANG good. After the trailers I thought this would be average at best but this is legitimately Disney's best or 2nd best remake (can't decide b/w this & TJB). Robin Williams as Genie will always remain immortal but Will Smith was tremendous too and it's a good thing that he did his own thing. The real scene stealer or I should say best performer was Naomi Scott hands down, not only did she act well, her singing was just unreal, it was beautiful. Other cast did well too and I don't understand the criticism about Jafar, I thought he was fine. Hopefully there's a sequel.
8.5/10.
I've seen it today and i totally agree

Well he has a new name now and that name is great for new theories about him,Grindelwald and Dumbledore (the two most interesting characters). If the script of FB3 isn't very dense and the focus is on his new identity it could be very good

Gotta love the overreactions by some. This will still turn in a profit for WB, not to mention the countless merchandising out there, hell, the screenplay is in the best sellers list and has been for several weeks now on Amazon UK, FR, US, along with the screenplay for FBAWTFT, it all trickles down to HP as well.
That's the beauty of this. Also, it's funny how you don't see the pundits say that COS decreased from PS (might have been a different time but it still applies), domestically and worldwide, and POA did from COS. And TLJ from TFA, JW: FK from JW and also countless others (hell, The Lost World from JP). This happens. FBAWTFT may have had fantastic legs, there's bound to be a portion of people who didn't care that much for it who simply did not return for TCOG.
Add to that a LOT more competition. FBAWTFT only really had Moana to worry about and that didn't even open as high as WIR did this year domestically. TCOG faced WIR which overperformed, Creed II which increased on Creed, The Grinch which has been having INSANE drops for weeks. Add to that Venom overperforming in China and taking a ton of screens away.
Then the film being more divisive and also a very different beast than FBAWTFT. China and SK didn't dig it: quite a decrease. Although some markets increased like France, Russia, Germany (will probably when all is said and done), etc. France has great WOM, so does Japan. In a way, it's encouraging because the film OPENED, it just faced more competition, and being more frontloaded and divisive, it'll end up lower with still a strong result.
David Yates said the third film would be a lot lighter and simpler which I believe will probably make it closer to FBAWTFT. I just hate the haters having a field day and ridiculously saying that it's done. This is a five part story, JK asked for it and you just need to have that span to be able to go from 1927 to 1945 (third film will jump a few years ahead), and to properly develop Dumbledore, Grindelwald and all the other characters. I believe that whatever hiccups (I personally love the film and don't have any issues with it) were felt by some with TCOG will all be resolved or will pay off when the other films come. Trust Jo.
Finally one positive person! I totally agree when you say that the pundits don't mention the decreases in the first HP movies and the competition is way bigger than two years ago,add the bad reviews and mixed WOM and there you have almost -$200 M
