2 Fast 2 Furious was loaded with CGI race sequences, but the logic behind them was still somewhat grounded in reality. Ironically, as over the top as Fast Five was, most of the action was practical, which was a huge upgrade from the entirely CGI Fast and Furious reboot in 2009. I would say Fast and Furious 6 is when the laws of physics were almost completely abandoned. Furious 7 is when the series fully embraced the Roger Moore era style of over the top gadget based action.

Yeah, they did a good job not revealing too much here while enticing the audience to an epic journey. 700M WW doesn't seem too far fetched at this point. It doesn't have much direct competition until Christmas.

Interested to see how this will perform with a proper exclusive theatrical release, and the fear(s) of COVID almost entirely behind us. Of course, I'll be there day one in IMAX. This is the more exciting section of the novel, and WOM was pretty good on the original. I can see this performing slightly above expectations. 600M+ global might be possible?

I agree the Sonic films are better. I've seldom seen chemistry between a live action and animated character on the same level as Schwartz and Marsden. Mario Bros beats those two films on an aesthetic level, but Sonic is better in every other department. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the Mario Bros film. It's just the Sonic films are more well rounded.

As a fan of the series before the Wii era, I enjoyed all the little easter eggs and visual references. I must say that I had a fat grin on my face each time they playfully transitioned an action scene to the 2.5 dimensional side scroll angle. I do agree the story is paper thin, but it isn't without its charm. The OST is quite good, but the pop songs they chose were WAY OFF. Took me out completely in a couple of scenes.
I can see why this film is on track for a record opening. It's harmless, safe, and cute entertainment for kids with enough references to keep old fans engaged.

The animation looks stunning, but it appears to suffer the same fate as the original Mario Bros. film. Adapting a platformer with a thin story into a film that can engage an audience is an uphill battle for any screenwriter. I will definitely see it for the visuals alone. I'm just disappointed they haven't cracked the code with this series yet. I'm sure younger less assuming audiences will devour this, though. It looks like pure eye candy, and I heard the second half is breezy with some enjoyable action sequences.

I'm crossing fingers for 70+ million. I'm not expecting Top Gun: Maverick numbers due to the MPAA rating, but an original action IP operating at the highest level of proficiency deserves a fitting lion's share in its farewell.

Is 60M OW too high of a prediction for this? I can see it performing better than 3, but not by a substantial amount. The films have a built in audience for us action aficionados who enjoy practical stunts and polished action sequences. I just don't think it'll ever have a huge breakout similar to something like the Deadpool series. I'd like to be proven wrong, though.

A little surprising Banshees and Elvis got completely shut out. Otherwise, mostly predictable night at the Oscars.

I think it's almost official that Everything is gonna be the big winner. Banshees and Elvis might pick up a couple. Maverick and Avatar get one tech award.

The running time might be an issue for some people, but seeing this cast on the big screen is a must for me. Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, and Marko Zaror. It's rare you see them on the big screen in the US. I can't wait.

The Adventures of Green Screen. A new predictable adventure with stakes that are seemingly meaningless. The only true artists are at the CGI companies who comparatively work slave wages. Coming to a theater near you.

A series that started off as a tongue in cheek satire of the slasher genre is now in its sixth iteration, and trying to be a little more serious. Craven rolling in his grave.

What has this series become? I pine for the tongue in cheek satire. I don't know how I feel about the direction this series is going in. To be fair, I have had low expectations since 3.

Happy about Banshees win(s). I was hoping McDonagh would take it, too. His best work since In Bruges, It just slightly edges out Three Billboards. Easily his best directed film from a technical standpoint.

Argh. Link won't work. It was a clip of M3GAN promoting theater etiquette before the trailers start. Blumhouse did a pretty good with the tongue in cheek marketing.

What are the predictions for this on OW? Will it be the first film to take Avatar out of the top spot, or land as a sort of cult classic dud? This film and MaXXXine are my most anticipated horror films right now.

Good luck to those dealing with this winter storm. Stay warm and safe. I lived in Chicago for a couple of years during winter. It was -10 °F with wind chill quite a few times (wind chill exponentially makes it worse). I wish that weather on no man.

That's what I meant. The big legacy films/directors are not faring so well right now. I think Scorsese will exit the festival with high praise (out of competition).
