At the risk of over-reading, I do raise a slight eyebrow at comments like this:
I'm sure this has already been throughly discussed in this thread, but, I dunno. If the stars of the film keep telling folks not to expect Happy Fun Times, maybe it's not going to be all that Fun.
===
I have stepped back from some of my concerns, as on reflection (and the IW/EG example) catharsis done right could do gangbusters in this environment. At the same time I'd be lying if I didn't have a slight concern overall given that Fun Is In right now.
How will people react if they're expecting one type of movie, but get another? Gonna find out soon enuf, I suppose.
Wouldn’t be spider-man:endgame without some serious sad vibes

Then we might as well stop thinking of movies as art and start thinking of them as pure product. Might as well blow up the Mono Lisa and replace it with a meme.
Way ahead of you buddy. Vast vast majority of movies that are interesting to me as a vector of daily gross I will never see, and certainly not pay for a trip to see.

Then maybe we should change the forum’s name to Artistic Quality Theory. Sounds way cooler to me
It seems like a lot of people want to be posting on Artistic Quality Theory instead! I think there are actually a lot of places to do that, but it’s certainly not why I’m in this particular place.

Matrix doesn't come out on the 17th.
And Berg unleashing his powers on a musical that's getting raves is far more a cinematic event than spider movie #15 that has messy marketing with kinda ugly visuals.
WSS+M4 combined total will be like NWH 2day. By all means, like what you like. But money talks as far what normal people consider a cinematic event and what they do not, and we are on box office theory rather than artistic quality theory or whatever.

Correct. And that's bad. And we should be doing everything we can to stop it?
Like… what? Serious question — what is to be done? Posting about how you wish less vfx/CBMish movies were still successful theatrical exclusives to a degree they have been in the past isn’t going to magic the GA into wanting to see them again. The streaming genie isn’t going back in its bottle, home tech is only going to get better and cheaper.

-
Musicals don’t have that V.F.X.
Therefore, to much of the GA, they’re home movies more than go out in your car movies. This was a secular trend even before/without covid and the comparison to a 2014 release like Into the woods is pretty meaningless imo. 2014 was before the streaming era and 2021 is well in the middle of it.

This applies to you too bucko.
Okay, okay, I’ll cool it with some of the more trolly jokes. But on a serious note I do think discussion about the fact that some movies are doing extremely well still (inducing one in 7 days) is a pretty natural and inevitable response to other movies doing not so well and concerns about broad market health.

We’re gonna need more than 6 marvels per year to save this industry. Maybe 8.

Yeah the true fri could actually be kind of okay. Got the most brutal 2nd and 3rd weekend competition of the year, so quite curious how it can leg.

I actually do think they’re fun 👀
Anyway no need to meltdown about this adult singy movie with low numbers when we have a real cinematic event lined up in 7 days.
Showerthought — NWH probably sold more $$ on Th than WSS, right?

That was my guess based on the location in your profile. The other is in Orange, CA. Just for fun (is fun the right word) I took a look at sales.
63 shows
6977/13181 sold
$118,922.13!

In India I have a theater selling 7k tixs for opening day so far on 20 shows. May get may be 6 more shows eventually for OD of 9-9.5k tixs.About 7k US as well looks like. Should go over 10k final.

Ep was awful. Show is awful. I can definitely assure you it has plenty to piss off book readers, really badly handled start and as it doesn't seem to get better I am done unless s2 or 3 gets glowing praise from trusted sources.

Looking like mid-high 40s now, FLOP
SpoilerKind of liking Fri numbers so far. We’ve still got a long way to go.

Can reduce show frequency tbh. Would rather have fewer, more satisfying shows.
I’d rather have 3 well paced 8 eps than 4 poorly paced 6 eps I guess, but the actual ideal here is 4 well paced 6 eps imo.

Why just the unvaccinated? Vaccinated people can still get Covid, pass Covid, and die of Covid too. My fiancee has Covid right now and she's the only one in our household who is vaccinated and the only one with Covid. I had a co-worker who was in his early 40s die of Covid even though he was fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated aren't the enemy. People need to stop this discriminatory crap
Vaccinated people are much less likely to get covid, pass covid, and die of covid. You should all get vaccinated, you’re risking your own lives and other’s for nothing.

Here's where the comps would be if it had no more presales until an hour before shows began...
BW - 3.57x (47.14m)
SC - 6.87x (60.42m)
Eternals - 4.99x (47.39m)
Venom 2 - 5.53x (64.1m)
This seems to be really blowing away the final comps from other regions, interesting.

Feige sticking these 1 hour shows to just 6 episodes was very short sighted. Even 8 episodes instead of 6 would’ve fixed a lot of pacing issues.
I bet Feige would love 8 instead, but he doesn't have a *complete* blank check. We've already got like 1200 minutes of live action this year -- I think 1600 would have dramatically improved quality via pace but it is a 33% higher spend for higher ups to approve sight unseen.

Higher totals will rely on really great WOM, but even if legs are cbm normal will be a great result.
