Writers never get any blame in discussions about blockbusters for some reason. The director is the quarterback of films apparently. People expect them to answer for all the success and all the failures regardless of if there are additional people to praise or condemn. For example, the same like 3 people have written most of the marvel movies.

Oh so it's possible she already had a history with not understanding why people are drawn to the property they're adapting and alienating those fans that are the very reason you thought making the adaptation was a good idea to begin with? Interesting.. No but seriously though, I've noticed that studios have this thing they like to do where they will buy film rights to some breakout IP, then indicate that they either don't know or don't understand why it was successful in the first place. The first time I realized it was when Percy Jackson was adapted and they made it into even more of a Harry Potter ripoff than it already was. You thought it was a good idea to buy rights to the thing because there was already a built in, practically guaranteed audience. How does it make sense to spit in that audience's faces and do what you think would be successful? If you don't believe it's accessible enough as is, what's the point of even buying it? Just make your own shit with its own name.

I'm telling you, it's because it's such an undeniable failure that they're having a hard time figuring out how to spin it positively. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney is trying to get ahead of the narrative and minimize press on how bad it's doing. I think they want no marketing of any kind and are really hoping that the only people talking about it are the people who actually go see it. Like I said before, it'd explain the massive budget (assuming deadline is correct, which is questionable) and the lack of marketing. At some point they realized it was going to be a shitshow and they said to themselves "well, we can either spend a little extra with ron howard finishing, then move forward with marketing as usual and hope that people like whatever we can salvage....OR we can slash the marketing budget by 75 percent and divert those funds to production to make a better final product. If we do that, the fanbase may be big enough that word of mouth markets it instead, and as a bonus now we have a better movie which means better long term profit"

No its because the news outlets need time to figure out a new dishonest way to frame the failure. Headline: with good social media buzz, solo set to open to +180M Article: disneys latest star wars installment is generating strong word of mouth after coming in above initial friday estimates. Insiders report the opening could baloon as high as 130-195M by the friday after next

Exactly. now you're getting it. Loooootta the actors well known from that show are kinda trash. But they have smart agents who are leveraging the success of that show. As we saw with Joffrey's actor, people can't tell person apart from character so they think they like the actors when they really just like their characters... Anyway, this is where the real fun starts. Get all of the "gotta see it opening day" viewers out of the way so we can get a real picture of how Solo will do.

I think that 300 million dollar number, if accurate, isn't as bad as it seems. I mean it's horrible, but I suspect this is why marketing was so trash. They may have decided to hold off on marketing, release embargos earlier, and hope that they could source marketing through the fans. Perhaps they were actually keenly aware nobody seemed excited for the movie and decided to spend the money on a product that may age better.

The important thing to note here is what I've been trying to argue for the past few days: it's not just a vocal minority that isn't interested and that they're not even mostly "boycotting" alt-right people. There are plenty of people who just thought TLJ was a bad movie, and just plain aren't interested. Finding out the movie is "good fun" or "fine" isn't going to convince them to see it. The numbers will probably prove it, and going back to that ~600 page thread will probably be funny in a few weeks. The younger, positive group always thinks that the more negative group is tiny by comparison. I tried pointing to what happened in certain elections in 2016. Was told that this point was irrelevant to the conversation. Funny, haven't seen them post much recently... Getting off topic, though. My point is that I don't know that all TLJ "haters" would actually like the movie. And even if they would, the full damage of that movie will probably only be seen next year when episode 9 comes out. We may think this is the JL of Star Wars only to find out that it's more like the Wonder Woman. If this goes on to make a bunch of money by the grace of the capitalism gods(EXTREMELY unlikely given international numbers, but let's humor the thought), people will probably think it means the brand can still be saved. But the true horror will come if it turns out this was just the eye of the hurricane.

Kevin Feige got away with early marvel shit (not sure what that refers to, though) because his time making superhero movies extends like 10 years before iron man. His superiors probably had some reason to trust his judgement in a genre that was historically considered a fucking joke. Kathleen Kennedy may have a notable reputation in film but I suspect that's not quite the same as being present from nearly day one and shaping a franchise/genre from the ground up. It's almost an opposite trajectory, actually.
