  1. The score on Douban is now even 4.9 Maybe people went to watch it because of the unexpected great box office, and probably quite a number of people really dislike if after watching it and give it an extremely low score to even out.'
  2. I think Disney will have to go half Chinese or full Chinese, seems mean to say that, but Golding does not seem Chinese/East Asian enough.
  3. The production company of the Korean original also has a share in the box office, they must be rooting it hard now
  4. I think it can, given its run, China's box office is just so confusing.
  5. I just read some news about its release back in Taiwan. Many Taiwanese people are amazed/shocked by its success, as Dear Ex which was released slightly earlier that month, but did not have such crazy hype, even the reviews were generally more positive than More Than Blues. Then the director of MTB talked about how they set the target audience as teenage girls and college girls and organized two preview screenings with only teen girls and college girls. All teen girls gave really positive review and half of the college girls thought the film was great. Then via these teen girls who eagerly shares the film in social media, and leads to great hype and therefore wonderful box office.
  6. I understand what you mean, but this film is crazily overperforming. Just read some sort of analysis about its box office, and some people said Douyin (Tik-tok) plays a big part in the marketing. Basically it's now super popular in Douyin (which targets younger audience I think), and people likens it to EX3, which also did a great job in Douyin marketing, but has a rather low score in Douban, and extremely good box office). China is indeed a weird market to understand, I can understand those films with strong nationalistic appeal doing extremely well, but this is seriously WOW!
  7. I just thought Disney never wanted to fire him in the first place, and losing him to DC and not being able to find a good director replacement does hurt him. At the end of this saga, congrats to James Gunn who not only got reinstated as the director of GOTG, but also getting a new big franchise film in his pocket
  8. 14 March is White Valentine's Day, so maybe they want a love story? But seriously this film is so f-ed up
  9. I seriously hate it with a passion 😄 The entire story is problematic, the male and female protagonists are horrible selfish people who hurt everyone around them in the name of "unconditional" love. When I watched it, I just kept think WTF?!!! Anyway, the marketing company did a lot, and did well too. They had lots of actors and KOLs (one of them is Hu Ge, the Chinese actor who has 60m followers on Weibo)
  10. Seeing you post makes me register for an account here, hahaha True that the reaction for the film is really bipolar I have watched the film, 7% of rating being 2 stars or less seems fair to me, and I honestly expect higher low score as I really hate it. I guess for people who hate the film with passion, giving a 1-star or 2-star is a no brainer, and if I can, I would give it a negative star. Reason 2 and 3 does not seem like the reason behind of the low score. WOM is not that good, the score of Douban is really low. But the marketing company did mobilized a lot of KOL to promote the film and encouraged people to go watch it. I guess that worked. By the way, marketing companies would also pay for some companies to help them get higher score in social media. It's really common in China, as well as Hong Kong.
