Is it just me or are these numbers for Queen and Slim really damn good? Especially given the # of theatres it is in? Could surpass Widows #'s last year, which arguably had more hype, marketing, and bankability.

Saw it yesterday and it was fantastic, though I don’t think I’d have the fortitude to watch it again.  Similar to JoJo Rabbit in that regard. Thank goodness I saw Knives Out in between the two of them, so there was some levity in the mix.  All three of them, I’d recommend.

  3. The Part I / Part II thing is discussed in a Collider retrospective this week:

    Quote

In April 2015, as filming was about to get underway on Captain America: Civil War, Marvel signed directors Joe and Anthony Russo to take the helm of Infinity War 1 and 2. That they were hired before even making Civil Warspeaks to the strength of not only their work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but also their working relationship with Marvel Studios throughout the development of that film and Civil War. Clearly the Russos and Marvel saw eye to eye on how to make these kinds of movies. The next month, the Russo Brothers’ Marvel screenwriters and MCU veterans Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were tasked with writing the two-part epic.

However, at this time Marvel realized that Infinity War would no longer be a “Part 1” and “Part 2” scenario, despite their previous announcement. Feige explained that shortly after revealing the release dates and titles in October 2014, Marvel realized they wanted to make two distinct movies, not two half-movies:

“We announced [in 2014] Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2. Very soon after that, as we started talking about it, we realized that’s not really what we were doing, and that’s not really what we wanted to do. We didn’t wanna do half a movie and then half a movie. We wanted to do two distinct movies, and we can talk about is it a cliffhanger or not at the end of Infinity War—and it’s semantics perhaps—but we always looked at it as not a cliffhanger. Thanos won and the movie is over. And now that you’ve seen Endgame it’s a tonally very different movie than Infinity War and stylistically very different than Infinity War, which again was always the intention, so very soon after calling them Part 1 and Part 2, we said, ‘Oh we’re not gonna do that.’”

As expected, a bunch of bullshit. I'm not sure if you know how to read a text, but Billboard is expecting 700k from her first week, not 550k. While HDD has it between 725k-825k which would put is as the second biggest album of year on the OW alone.

    http://hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=317667&title=NEW-RELEASE%3A-EARLY-READS-ON-LOVER

I know that you're a desperate Madonna stan who can't stand the fact that Taylor has managed to show more longevity than this woman despite relying on talent instead of image, but you don't need to go that low trying to paint an OW of 800k+ when everyone is struggling to sell it on total as a bad thing, especially when it's a seventh album. The only one on Taylor's level these days is Adele.

And we can praise one woman without unfairly dragging another.  Madonna is the most consistently successful female pop artist of all time.  Most records sold, biggest touring artist, and first ballot Hall of Famer.  Trying to make the case that Madonna doesn’t have talent or, of all things, longevity, is absurd.  Taylor Swift will be quite happy if she lasts half as long as Madonna, and she’d be the first one to say so, I’m sure.

Not that this has much relevance to the weekend thread, so I’ll tie it in by saying none of the week’s releases are likely to leave an impact on pop culture like Madonna or Taylor Swift, but Ready or Not sure was a great moviegoing experience!

No hits on the album. No one cares outside of her core devoted fanbase. Pretty soon she'll be to old for whatever it is she's doing in that gif, and with no talent to fall back on she'll be over.

I’m not even a fan, but the fact that her album already has the best selling week of the year after one day and will be the biggest opening since the last time she put out an album proves she’s continuing to operate on a completely different level than the rest of the industry. The only person who can move more units than her is Adele.

Given that she’s written everything she’s ever released, as well as big hits for other artists, it’s ridiculous to claim she has no talent to fall back on.  She could retire from performing and still have a massive career as a songwriter for other artists.

I'll keep beating this drum - TIERED Pricing.  If these smaller scope/budgeted films were priced anywhere from 50-65% of a currently priced ticket then more people would see them in the theater instead of waiting to see it at home.

My son and I went to see Good Boys today and are planning to go see Once Upon a Time, Ready or Not, the Spider-Man expansion, and Scary Stories, at the very least, over the next two weeks.

This is after many years of going to the movies for big event films only.  What changed?  We just bought the Regal Unlimited passes.  In NYC, a movie ticket is at least $15.  Two movies in, and we will be getting every one after that for 50 cents a ticket.

You are 100% right. You cannot expect people to pay the same amount of money for vastly different experiences.  Tiered pricing is another great solution, especially since not everyone is going to go to the movies frequently enough to justify a subscription.

What? How do you know this.

A lot of people saw that film, chances are a lot of these "trolls" did too.

I’ve already provided a link earlier in the thread.

You’re using discredited Rotten Tomatoes audience scores to promote your latest conspiracy theory about Disney buying reviews. The only reason we’re even talking about it in this thread is because you attempted to support your completely insupportable claim that Disney does this, because “look at the difference between critics and audience ratings!!!”

    It’s transparent. It’s tiresome.  It’s disingenuous.

Common sense, really. When a movie like Captain Marvel has more ratings in the first 12 hours (the vast majority of which are negative) than Infinity War had in 8 months, it's clear there was a review bomb.

Applying the same to TLJ isn't much of a stretch, given the similar set of people who took issue with both

    And Black Panther as well.

But what qualifies the alt right troll angle as a fact? Rationalization on the part of people who did like the movie is a bit skewed source of statistics.

The fact that Rotten Tomatoes confirmed the attack and adjusted its policies in the wake of it, as have other sites which allow for fan ratings/reviews.

The review bombing isn’t an open question up for debate. It is confirmed to have happened and is an ongoing issue for films perceived to have a feminist or anti-racist agenda, and the confirmation has come from those who run the sites themselves.

Thankfully, procedures have been put into place to minimize the impact of this and have movies reviewed by those verified to have seen it, or at least purchased tickets for it.

mm in the trailers there was a scene promoting asking for consent before you kiss someone. I do agree the swearing is a bit excessive. I don't think 11  year old boys actually talk like that lol.

Dear God, do they talk like that!  One of the most entertaining things about working in a school is when kids that age get in trouble for using foul language, usually in a way that reveals they don’t quite understand what the words mean!

So Roz Weston is an Alt right troll?

Pointing to a negative rant by someone who isn’t an alt right troll does not disqualify the fact that The Last Jedi was bombed by alt right trolls.

Except Last Jedi was targeted by alt right trolls LOL. Disney has plenty of PANNED movies.

Disney manipulates the critics!!!  (Yet rotten ratings for summer tent poles The Lion King and Aladdin.)

Disney fudges the box office!!! (Yet Dumbo, Solo, Nutcracker, Christopher Robin take a bath.)

This growing insistence on conspiracy theories to explain away facts that threaten one’s worldview is corrosive and cheapens meaningful dialogue.

If Avatar 2 breaks box office records and scores with critics while being distributed by Disney, I am sure you’ll be the first one to call the reviews bought and the box office fudged...

Have you seen the movie? Cause that's definitely not in the movie lol

From what I’ve read, the movie criticizes toxic masculinity far more than embracing it. The age of the kids has a lot to do with that, because they simply aren’t old enough to indulge in what they’re being exposed to.

That all seemed obvious from the trailer, too. One of the main reasons I wanted to see it, so I am glad the reviews came in strongly.

I'm still here and will be ready for Avatar 2.

remember 2.78b in 2019 isnt a big deal.

4 billies in 2021 will show you that

2.795b isn’t a big deal, even though no other movie in history has grossed it.

Here’s a hot take for you:  if Avatar 2 “only” grosses 2 billion in 2021...it is still a big deal. That’s rarefied box office air.

4 billion would destroy all records.  I’d never bet against Cameron, but that’s a heavy lift for a sequel that is one of four announced sequels releasing two years apart.  If these movies engross the public the way LOTR/Potter/MCU did, I’d imagine it’s the finale that is the best bet for breaking records.

what was up with the new Spider-Man?

was it supposed to have good word of mouth?

the movie really fell apart on itself with all the reality magic, did anyone else feel like this wouldn't go over well with audiences?

It’s the top grossing Spider-Man worldwide and has improved over its predecessor domestically and worldwide by a good margin.  What more was it expected to do?
