The academy already "recognised" Scorsese with a win for The Departed so I wouldn't be surprised if they simply feel they don't owe him anything at this point, and they honestly just went back to snubbing him right after
Post The Departed, he made 5 movies and 3 of them were both nominated for Director and Picture lol. His upcoming 6th movie will also receive those nominations
The idea they went back to "snubbing" him is categorically false! Shutter Island was delayed from fall 2009 to early 2010 because it was not an awards film. It's a genre and commercial play and critically one of his more lower rated films. Silence could have been an Oscar contender but it was his most "inaccessible" film in quite some time and suffered from a wonky release strategy. Late December with a trailer premiere in November. Paramount also had Arrival and Fences to campaign.

when are SAX tickets on sale and im assuming no plf?
Saw used to be a luxuriously consistent and profitable franchise and this seemed like it had potential to return to that status but idk.. lionsgate is also a disaster rn
-
The Nun 2
9/7 4:00PM DOLBY
Less than half full (30 people if that?)
Trailers:
The Creator
Saltburn
Thanksgiving
Saw
The Exorcist
Flower Moon
Bob Marley
Dune
Color Purple
Obvious and expected reactions during the jump scares. Mostly quiet throughout
-
Jawan
9/7 12:30PM IMAX
At least 75% full
Trailers:
Expendables 4
(2 other bollywood films I didn't recognize)
Massive applause when SRK first appears. Cheers throughout
-
jawan had more seats sold than Pathaan did at the 1230IMAX. The theater went insane for almost 3 hours straight like they were switfies at the eras tour.
-
the 4pm dolby for Nun 2 was less than half full.
The 1230 IMAX for Jawan was at least 75% and probably had more seats than the opening imax showing of Pathaan

This seems both more outwardly emotional and more logistically impressive/showy than The Irishman so I think it stands a better chance at winning something. Gladstone is the most obvious contender, production design (Jack Fisk is an industry legend who's never won) and adapted screenplay are also possibilities.
it is not beating poor things or barbie for production design lmfao

SOW, Nomadland and GB ; three winner without SAG and WGA win and 3 "exceptions" in the span of 10 years aren't exactly "exceptional" at all. And $900m is as much as how appealing it can get for a 3 hours talkie historical drama.
so just because it grossed an inexplicable amount, you think this 3 hour historical drama thats told non-linear is the type of broadly appealing film that wins populist awards and plays well on a consensus ballot? I do not. Shape of Water is the closest comp from the films you mentioned but that still had the movie narrative in its favor and 2017 was a year of unconventional contenders. Obviously Oppenheimer is the frontrunner but the early frontrunner usually falters by the time and I still think the narrative of the movie might alienate it with certain voting bodies ala something like The Revenant

It’s a blockbuster with an A Cinemascore. Just because it’s going up against your favorite gentrified filmmakers doesn’t mean you have to resort to bad analysis.why are you trying so hard to be funny? you just make yourself look even more obnoxious than usual. and lol at you of all people mentioning "bad analysis" as if a blockbuster with an A cinemascore locks it for best Picture. You try so hard to be shady yet wouldn't my "gentrified filmmakers" also have blockbusters with A cinemascores?

You said it like majority Oscar BP winner would need a SAG win. The shape of water, Green Book and Nomadland won in the past 10 years without even getting into SAG ensemble nomination in the past 10 years.
Oppenheimer doesn't need SAG ensemble win to prevail at the Oscar. A nomination alone will keep the movie momentum.
why would oppenheimer win Best Picture when it's losing SAG and probably WGA? Shape of Water, Nomadland etc are the exceptions. I don't think it's as broadly appealing a contender as recent winners have been

Why is Oppenheimer so unlikely to win SAG in your opinion? Genuine question btw, I know little of how these awards circuits really play out.
SAG prefers diverse casts and not primarily white men... Everything Everywhere, CODA, Parasite, Black Panther, Hidden Figures. The most recent exceptions are Trial of Chicago 7 but that was a Sorkin film with hammy acting during the pandemic, Three Billboards but that had 2 acting wins and was female-driven technically and Spotlight

Kind of wild that Disney is bowing The Bikeriders, Poor Things, and All of Us Strangers in December (they also have Magazine Dreams somehow still slated for that month but we all know that's going nowhere for obvious reasons). Clearly expecting at least one of those to stick, all a matter of which one ends up connecting the most.
Bike riders is 20th. The other 2 are Searchlight

So final update before tomorrow:
PICTURE:
1. Oppenheimer (Universal) (88 MC/93 RT with 8.6 average and 91% RT audience with 4.5/5 average + 4.3 Letterboxd + A Cinemascore + 300.1m DOM/778.8m WW)
2. Barbie (WB) (80 MC/88 RT with 7.9 average and 83% RT audience with 4.3/5 average + 4.1 Letterboxd + A Cinemascore + 596.1m DOM/1.3b WW)
3. Flower Moon (Paramount)- Cannes (89 MC/97 RT with 8.6 average + 3.9 Letterboxd)
4. Past Lives (A24)- Sundance (94 MC/98 RT with 9.1 average and 94% RT audience with 4.6/5 average + 4.3 Letterboxd + 10.8m WW)
5. The Holdovers (Focus)- Telluride + TIFF
6. The Zone of Interest (A24)- Cannes + Telluride + TIFF + NYFF (98 MC/96 RT with 9.2 average + 3.9 Letterboxd)
7. Anatomy of a Fall (NEON)- Cannes + Telluride + TIFF + NYFF (89 MC/98 RT with 8.4 average + 4.0 Letterboxd)
8. Saltburn (MGM)- Telluride
9. Poor Things (SEARCHLIGHT)- Venice + Telluride + NYFF
10. Maestro (NETFLIX)- Venice + NYFF
ALT:
Air (AMAZON)- SXSW (73 MC/93 RT with 7.7 average and 98% RT audience with 4.7/5 average + 3.6 Letterboxd + A Cinemascore + 52.4m DOM/90m WW)
The Color Purple (WB)
UNLIKELY BUT SHOULD HAVE FANS:
How Do You Live (GKIDS)- TIFF + NYFF
All of Us Strangers (SEARCHLIGHT)- Telluride + NYFF
The Killers (NETFLIX)- Venice
Feel very strongly about the top 8. Venice is not getting shut-out so the last 2 spots I have Venice premieres. The initial Sept release and wackiness of the material/trailer for Poor Things expressed inaccessibility, but it's still a Searchlight film from a popular director and A-list actress. It has prestige and an excellent festival strategy as well as likely support from many branches. The reviews for Maestro might be all over the place but it's Netflix and has undeniable backing with it from Cooper, Spielberg and Scorsese. Might have too much bait to miss out and actors will love it regardless.

Yeah. Aside from The Boy and the Heron (which is TIFF opening night anyways), we're going to know the reception of all the remaining big fall movies by Tuesday. It's going to be hard for anything to stop Oppenheimer's narrative at this point.
Oppenheimer can easily lose Best Picture. In fact, I would predict Nolan winning Director and it losing BP to like Barbie. Oppnheimer isn't winning SAG by any means which alone will diminish it somewhat
-
Even without actorly promotion (which sucks for Gladstone since this is a historic career changer for her), the fall season is lacking and this is one of the only films that can be truly eventized. It has prestige, the cast, the acclaim and the genre. And Leo is still one of the biggest draws alive.
Domestically, Leo and Scorsese's only collab that didn't gross 100m was Gangs of New York in 2002 (77.7m). Leo's last theatrical film to miss 100m was J. Edgar in 2011 (37.3m). And in the span of the present since Gangs in 2002, Leo's only other sub100m films were:
December 2008: Revolutionary Road- 22.9m (platform release, never played wider than 1077 theaters)
October 2008: Body of Lies- 39.3m
December 2006: Blood Diamond- 57.3m
July 2019: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood- 41m OW/142.5m DOM/377.4m WW
Dec 2015: The Revenant- 39.8m wide OW/183.6m DOM/532.9m WW
XMas 2013: Wolf of Wall Street- 18.4m OW/116.9m DOM/389.8m WW
May 2013: Great Gatsby- 50m OW/144.8m DOM/353.6m WW
XMas 2012: Django Unchained- 30.1m OW/162.8m DOM/449.8m WW
July 2010: Inception- 62.7m OW/292.5m DOM/825.7m WW
Feb 2010: Shutter Island- 41m OW/128m DOM/299.4m WW
Oct 2006: The Departed- 26.8m OW/132.3m DOM/289.6m WW
Dec 2004: The Aviator- 8.6m wide OW/102.6m DOM/208.3m WW
XMas 2002: Catch Me If You Can- 30m OW/164.6m DOM/355.6m WW
With IMAX and the desolation of the fall slate... I could see numbers similar to, like, Ford v Ferrari. Right now, I'd say OW around 35m, domestic around 120m, and WW around 300
