Barbie: Deadline is reporting $36.5M until thursday for Barbie, around R$4.7M on thursday for a estimated total of R$177.7M. If those numbers hold up and are accurate, third weekend should be around R$20-23M.

    Endgame do 30m third weekend

Spider man and some other superheros are also popular, but not to the level of the local anime characters.

Sometimes we have manga version of these superheros, but I don't think they ever got very popular.

This Survey shows according to Brand Awareness,Spiderman is also as much as Dragon Ball in Japan, kids, elder, teenager,no matter who you are ,everybody know spiderman.

So I think at least Spider-Man is the household name, not sure about other superhero.

That is very interesting, I remembered having to read some foreign literature when I was in school, but most were translated so not in original language. I wondered if they teach newer literature these days like Harry Porter.

It is funny that Japan is very westernized, but at the same time not every brand or IP is popular here, even though they make so much money overseas. I am not sure, even without the scandal, if Barbie would be big here. But the look of Barbie would be appealing to many people I think. And I think the social satire actually would work here as well.

I heard Spider-Man as a single hero is very popular, but superhero as a whole is doing not good.

They have done some promotion for the movie in the past couple of months. One of the selling point was the the original barbies were made in Japan, when it was cheap to make toys here. But it is funny that the toys never took off here. But then in Japan, since the local toy makers are so big, foreign made toys don't usually get very popular here. And Japanese kids, and sometimes adults, have a slightly different taste in the toys I think.

I have definitely heard of Barbie before, but maybe not commonly referred to in Japan. I think the word Barbiecore is common in the west, but I've only heard it used since last year when referred to some of the movie images that was released last year.

I think in general the western cultural reference is not very high here, not in daily use anyway. Maybe people who are more actively online, and more exposed to people from other parts of the world would have more of such cultural reference. The only recent western media that gained big popularity here in a big way that I could think of

is Harry Potter. Emma Watson is probably the most popular actress in Japan for many young people.

And we also have some western literature that every one, especially girls know like Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, which is somewhat of a feminist icon in a way to Japanese women. Is Anne of Green Gables popular in China as well?

Government force student to read some western/Russia famous fiction book, every 2-3 grades student should do that because is their homework, and the story plot of the book will test in some exam(like ,Chinese exam is 120 marks ,and “familiar with famous book” is like 5 marks),so yes, they’re popular.

Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings are also mandatory for student to read,Harry Potter/Sherlock Holmes is mandatory for elementary school,The Lord of the Ring is for junior high school,Shakespare’s novel also, there’s a list of book that every students should read and will test in exam.I was not so happy for reading these book when I was a student(because you really need to read a lots of book at spare time, meanwhile you need to study your own class),but thanks to this policy, all of classic western character become super well-known.

Barbie is not really a popular brand here. They sell it but it's definitely not close to its popularity in the West. Licca chan is quite popular though, and I think it's from Mattel.

Same in China,Barbie doll is never popular, the yearly revenue of Barbie in China is not even as much as Australia consider we are the way bigger market,Mettal even closed the store in Shanghai to make sure they can cover the budget of business run in China

But the things is confused that Barbie is not popular brand but is a super well-known brand. Is just like James Bond and Batman,James Bond and Batman’s box office performance in China is sucks ,but everybody know these two character.Bond even become some kind of daily used word(like when you try to do something dangerous people will say ‘who do you think who you are?007 ?’Something,so as Barbie ,is become daily culture reference, like when a girl making a very heavy makeup people will said “what a deadly Barbie makeup”..

This is kind strange things, the brand that everybody know but won’t pay money for them

  6. Will this hurt Barbie popularity as a Brand in Japan?

Really curious since Barbie brand hurt its reputation because of feminist in China, but the brand is never been popular in China according to Mattel’s finical report, thought Barbie dolls is well known but is not popular.so there’s not much problem(when your market is niche ,most people won’t care what happened),curious about situation in Japan
