Unironically, the most exciting thing in film world rn is Saltburn blowing up on streaming. Everyone is talking about it, don't know why the studio wasted it in the platform release that couldn't reach the right audience. They geared it to Poor Things crowd whereas the movie proved a hit with TikTok one.
how big we talking?

Yet half a year ago SoF was able to use that huge push explicitly for the Fourth of July victory as a legs springboard (both films clearly got different degrees of genuine earned media out of that one day victory). Obviously you can't treat 99.th percentile outcomes as representative but that comparison is sticking with me (though I'm open to it being a bad one)
thing about SOF is that pretty much no one had heard about it before a deadline article announcing it had 10 million or so in pre-sales, and its also a fairly accessible movie, having parts of it being an action thriller
vs
a 100 million budgeted movie pushed by warner bros and oprah, that seemingly doesnt have that much wide appeal

Using the 30/70 split that Aquabro 2 currently has, it only needs to make $118M domestic to beat Black Adam's worldwide total. Can it do it?
doesnt work like that due to china
make it something like 35/65 (I just made that number up)

I rewatched, it does hold up surprisingly well, even the stupid parts are so fun to watch.
I’m kinda baffled how so many people are hating it very strongly and making very serious essays about how it tries to be a Parasite 2.0 and fails
I simply can’t believe people really thinks a movie with the shot below is aiming to be a profound statement
it tries to be fun and succeeds at being so, but near the end, when it starts running out of fun, the lack of depth seriously hurts it

Low to mid 300s seems more likely to me but Jan/Feb looks pretty dull so I dunno, maybe. Wouldn’t bet on it tho.
apparently its at 216 already
think we can probably scratch off the low

I have no interest in Wonka but I am glad it is doing well for the health of the box office, because people had a weird hate boner for the film before it was even released and because The Marvel fans on Twitter have been sobbing about that film rightfully being called a bomb while Wonka was called a hit "despite opening 7 million lower." So 2 out of three reasons are petty but I've never claimed not to be petty sometimes.
"the trailer looks bad" is not a weird hate boner

heard what if s2 isn't particularly good
I do wonder how hardcore fans are feeling and how much more they can take

Distributor screener apparently.

out of all the possible 4 hour cuts that can exist
I never would have expected hunger games 5 to have one

I agree that it is worrisome, hence why I'm skeptical about it. But something in Q1 has to break out unless we believe that cinemas will be completely deserted for 4 months, save for Dune (which won't be a mega hit anyway) and a couple more of decent releases.
Lisa frankenstein might have a break out chance too, but it has no star power and has nothing going for the male audience. At this point it's really hard to predict what will happen but I'm pretty sure that at least one of the smaller Q1 releases will crawl to 100 M, if not for anything else then just for the pure lack of competition.
mean girls is the only thing the ga even slightly familiar to the GA
inertia might get it there (100 m)

fences did +45% from thursday
I imagine that given the pretty terrible legs so far and the demos it targets it can behave somewhat similarly to it
but I cant see a path for a weekend beyond 15 million, probably 13 max

Not sure y'all are familiar with Mark, but he's a German box office tracker and a pretty reliable source for early numbers (if he wants to share):
As you can probably guess #2 is Migration and #4 is Color Purple...#5 is Anyone But You, which somehow enjoyed a fourth daily increase.

Yeah id personally go so far to state that anyone who scrolls on their phone during a movie disrespects the art of cinema. Its the same as snorring during a play for me. Im normally a very calm person, but whenever i see someones phone light blink up during a movie, i get unreasonably aggressive.
there is a massive difference between scrolling and turning it on for a second to check if the text (or vibration mode call) you just received is something important

I’m sorry but I cannot get on board with this “people should be allowed to check their phones during movies” thing and you should really try your hardest to not do that during a movie because it’s really disrespectful to other people. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing bright screens elsewhere other than the big one I’m watching.
Honestly that is one thing (of many, gonna try to be the positive one about theaters here ) I love about going to the theater: I’m forced to stay off my phone for a couple hours! You should embrace that, not try to incorporate your tiny screen even further into your lives
the lives of others dont stop just because I stop checking my phone
I stopped going to the theater closest to me because phone signals didn't reach inside it (it was underground)

I've just realised something. Assuming TCP's budget is actually $90m-$100m (from Oprah's interview)... the movie can be considered a bomb, right? It's not gonna do much overseas.
oprah will tell her fans to buy it on digital/physical and it'll be okay in the long run
but yes, since it likely isn't making more than 150 million its a flop/bomb

It's funny to see that being brought up right when its director has a new movie making the rounds. And yeah, its drops seem really bad to me, especially for the early 2000s. I guess Sony was counting on Lord of the Rings falling flat on its face.
disappointed to have a michael mann movie feel like such a non-event

whats ali
famous 10.2 million Christmas opening day to 58.2 million dom total
whats really interesting is that despite opening at 8 million less (5 million if you discount the "previews"), TCP will have a very similar 3rd day to Ali

More like The Woman King, b/c it's not breaking out from 25+ Black women, no matter how good it is...here, I was hoping that group would at least drag their families and friends, but that dragging seems limited (the 25 and under males number was a big warning sign that it was mom and grandma without the grandkids)...
Not sure how they can advertise it into this weekend to try and break that cycle. But some marketer needs to come up with something...
cant ignore the supercharged opening day when discussing expectations for this
had it released on aquaman 2 day and done 25-30 million during the 4-day then I doubt anyone would have been disappointed
just dont see this having much commercial appeal outside of a few specific demos, and dont think any marketer can do much about that
