Variety: 'The Purge' Surges to $14 Million Friday
We have our first declination of the evening.
Well, with 14 there's no way it reaches 30.
-
1:1 for The Purge, 0:1 for Insidious
Now which one was Insidious ... I don't remember that one or who starred in it.
... oh wait, was that another Ethan Hawke one with the weird thing where people see this demon or something.
... hmm, seems I was way off on that one after checking IMDB.

Yes you do Ed.
... also dat nice 21:1 ratio
... and Purge, lots of tweets, but 1:1 ... ugh, this is going to drop like crazy through the weekend and into next week.

Wow, 16 million + would be an amazing start for The Purge ... hell, I think I figured only high teens total for the weekend a few weeks back. 16 would guarantee 30 ... but not sure how much more due to that 3.4 midnight ... I suppose could go as high as 35, but probably not. More likely 32 or 33, especially if it sucks.
... nice box office lift on a weekend that looks like a lost cause after AE left.
-
I started following box office in general WAY back in the 90's ... would always follow the weekend box office #s on Showbiz Today each week on Monday afternoons, back when films like Independence Day, Twister, etc. came out ... so what, 1996-1997. The discussion on those shows back then seems archaic when thinking in today's world. Once had more internet access in the late 90's, early 2000's mostly followed reports from Gitesh and just stories on yahoo each week.
In 2005 or so, before Sith, I found Boxofficemojo.com ... followed stuff on that site ... then in 2006, found WorldofKj where I began being intrigued by the 'yahoo review' box office phenomenon ... one of my earliest recollections on that aspect was in 2006 when Poseidon was an utter bomb ... and then MI3 was really disappointing a few weeks later.
I was addicted to following each week ... and hell, every day or so since.
Of course, still haven't posted on KJ ... and just recently started posting here, despite being a member here since pretty much when it was created.

IM2 grossed another $20m. That would put IM3 at a pace under $405m, and I don't think it's going to have IM2 late legs.
Yeah, between MOS taking the comic book fans, and MU taking the families, it could be tough ... will be close to Spider-Man though.
So if it does 405 ... that's like what 360-365 w/o 3D, or am I way off on that. I'm terrible with 3D converting.

Even knowing the story, it was shocking to see happen ... especially the death of Talisa. Only negative was Catelyn killing the Frey wife ... it looked so fake ... the girl had nearly no face when she died.
Walder Frey with a good looking daughter ... didn't they tease in season 1 that one was decent.
Walder Frey in general was just a beast this episode ... laughing my ass off for the first part ... and disgusted throughout.
-
Imagine how bad it would do if Smith was not in it? (Well it would have a different date I know)
It wouldn't have been made ...
... well, I take that back, studios are dumb as fuck sometimes.
-
Perhaps it is having some nice late night business.
Too bad ... late night business should help good films ... not crap.
BTW, speaking of crap ... Wild Wild West with Big Willie is on TNT ... never seen it in full, never want to, never will.

You mean Junior Highschool?
I was in 10th grade when sign came out
Nope ... I was 20 years old.
Like I've said, I've been following box office online for 8+ years. I'm not a youngster anymore.

-
DAM I feel old lol
Yeah ... I was a going into my junior year in college the year Signs came out ...
That I've seen
Unbreakable A-
Signs B+
Sixth Sense B
Village C+
Happening C-
Lady in the Water - Not Seen
Airbender - Not Seen
Damn ... not shocked by After Earth ... it had bomb written all over it.

Boy, that Fast 6 # seems kind of low ... while Hangover is not totally tanking like I thought it would after the initial #s. Well, it's still tanking, but not free falling each day.
- 1
-
LOL That works.
But I meant FF6 2nd weekend vs After Earth.
Oh ... well, yeah I think FF6 will still be looking @ 60% drop ... F5 dropped 62. Still would be 35+ second weekend ... and I have doubts AE can beat that. It might be close.
-
FF6 over After Earth or no!?
You mean 4 day over AE total ... if so, I could see it happening very easily if AE debuts under 40 million. Well, IMO, no way that film makes more than 120 million without 50+ weekend given MOS 2 weeks later.
117 is great for F&F6 ... 47 for STID is also great. THO3 is just terrible.
-
More like 35/30.5/26.7/ 18M around 110M for 4-day. Remember with MD weekend, F6 should be less frontloaded.
Yeah, see post above ... made the Memorial Day mistake ... history shows that should be closer to 10% than 20% ...so I figure 107 4 day.
Of course, this is all assuming near the higher end of Rth ... not 33, if that then it's probably 85 & 101
-
Why would it drop so much on Saturday and Sunday?
Well, that's a 20% drop ... and yeah, it's too high ... revise 35/29/25/18 ... so 107 4 day I guess, 89 3 day.
... several top Memorial Day performers have dropped in that 10% range on Sunday ... I'll go 13% for F6.
For Saturday, I do think some of the demand will be more up front due to sequel, so still see even with Friday minus midnights.
-
It'll be doing a lot more than F5 over the 3day. If not 100m, than mid-high 90s.
With a 35 million Friday, I doubt it gets to mid 90's over 3 day ... 35/29/23/16 103 4 Day

BTW, I never really was a big fan of Tyrese in the other films ...but I tell you what. I really thought his character's egotism was on point in this film.
33-36 ... man, I figured we'd be going higher as the night went on, not looking possibly lower.
Star Trek with 10-11.5 ... so should be around 45 for the 4 day.
Thanks Rth.

Saw Fast 6 ... insane, ridiculous, defying all logic ... but very fun. End credits scene caused people to go nuts. (Although to be fair, the auditorium was filled with what looked like some sort of junior high school class trip ... so they were all stupid.
Sold out ... and the stupid theater only had it in one auditorium. Sure those two showing of Hangover were packed ... yeah, probably not.
A-
I expected 40 million after that midnight #, 35 would feel a little disappointing for me, but still ... it's doing 100 million over 4 days, so whatever.
EPIC is surprising ... didn't see it going that high. Didn't think much of any buzz for it.

Interesting estimated Sunday holds. STiD at 24% drop while every other movie in top 10 is at or well over 30%. I think other than STiD every other movie should increase from estimates as Monday is a holiday in Canada.
I'd be surprised by that hold, even with the monday holiday in Canada ... I get the feeling that 84 million will become 83 million at best tomorrow.
I saw STID, it was good IMO, not quite as good as ST09, but fine.

Funny video Baumer ... that clip is always great for stuff like this. (I'm the one who commented on youtube and said lurked here)
