  1. I am still betting for Spirited Away numbers  B)

That would be amazing, but unfortunately, no. I said this before, no other movie will touch or even be close to Spirited Away, ever. Okay, maybe some movie in the distant future will get there, but definitely not Frozen.

Also yes, $100m minimum (or lock) is crazy and illogical. Minimum means it cannot be lower than that, and we know it could. So $100m possible yes, minimum no. And I'm actually rooting for it to get to that number. But for me now, it's around $75m

  2. I think I like Japanese title the most, アナと雪の女王 (Anna and the Snow Queen). Not only it shows there are 2 main characters, but also it sounds exciting. Like there will be something interesting between Anna and this Snow Queen.

Really strange about Indonesia, it's a booming movie market with 240 million inhabitants, that doesn't make sense.

I really think BOM is crumbling over the time, it's worse and worse.

Yeah, Indonesia is still a small market, but growing rapidly. Until 2009, the biggest box office for a movie was $5.2m, and since then at least 18 movies made more and the biggest one right now is $15.3m. I believe this year we will have our first $20m+ movie (TASM2 or TF4), but unfortunately we will never know. :(

  3. In Thailand, Frozen is called " Adventure in the Snow Queen's cursed Kingdom" very long name.

Rapunzel = The long haired princess

Brave = The great female warrior

Wreck it Ralph = Villain with a heart of a hero

That's like the answers to "What's your Native American name?" quiz thing lol. I did that quiz on the internet once, and I got "The Handsome One Who Lives Below". I'm not sure where "below" is, but at least I'm handsome lol.

What markets haven't opened yet outside of Japan?  BOM still isn't reporting anything for:

    Indonesia

I don't know why, but BOM has stopped reporting box office numbers for Indonesia since June 2013 :(. Frozen was released here on November 29, 2013. I did manage to find the latest update for Indonesian box office on the internet and it was August 2013. According to that, DM2 broke the record for the highest grossing animated film ever with around $6.5m.

Disney/Pixar films consistently produce great box office numbers here, but there are always one non-Disney/Pixar that manage to be the biggest animation each year (except 2010, where TS3 and Tangled were #1 and #2 animated films). I really want to know how successful Frozen was, since it had amazing WOM, and was in the theaters longer than any other animated films (including DM2).

  4. It's possible SK and the US alone will get it to 1b, so even China to go is extra on top.

Topping TS3 doesn't look too crazy.

11% drop sunday to sunday could me mean 45m more in SK. It on pace w avatar now.

    1.025b + Japan

    TS3 Global going down!

Avatar has a challenger in SK!

Yeah I was lowballing the numbers. China could be bigger too. TS3 is the target now. And then in several weeks, we'll be talking about Skyfall WW. lol

  5. yes. Defenitely things are getting out of order. No way Frozen hits pixar sequel levels in Japan but should do very well considering its release date. I think 50M should be the target until we see something different.

I dont think any movie in future will beat Spirited Away numbers. I doubt we will see any movie beat even HP1.

Yeah, it's literally untouchable. In Yen, there's a HUGE gap between Spirited Away (30b yen) and the 2nd highest grossing movie, HP1 (20b yen). And the ticket prices have stayed the same for 20+ years, so until the prices increase somehow, no movie will be close to Spirited Away.

Anyway, I'm optimistic about Frozen in Japan. Yeah 50m should be the target, but personally I could see 70m.

  6. Nice! 60m+ OW for Lego! 250m+ total?

Btw, it looks like Lego is doing great here. The show that I went to was 90% full, even though it's facing a local comedy that broke OW record for a local movie last week (and is having sold out shows in its 2nd weekend). So I think it will do good business in this part of Asia. Interestingly, I saw more teens and young adults than families in the crowds. And those people (including me and my friends) enjoyed it as much as the kids, or even more.

  7. Wow that's amazing for Frozen in SK, why has it resonated so much with audiences there?

I was gonna ask the same thing. I thought animated movies weren't popular in SK. KFP success is understandable since it has Asian theme. But Frozen? Never thought it would be the 3nd most attended foreign movie ever, and have a chance to be the 2nd! That's just crazy.

After Oaken says he'll throw in a visit to Oaken sauna he looks over there and says something like "hoo hoo, hello family" and waves to them and they wave back. Definitely his family. Looking at the size of the guy in the sauna I'd say that's Oakens' son with his wife and 3 kids.

I thought because it's a family, and Oaken probably didn't know their names, so he just called them "family". It's possible, right? But yeah they could be Oaken's family too.

  8. Is it true that the owner of the sauna cabin where Anna meets Kristoff, is gay?   Cuz there's a topless guy in the sauna surrunded by kids.

    It's possible, yes.

Wasn't there a woman in that sauna?

    Posted Image

Since she looked older than the other kids, I just assumed she's the topless guy's wife. I also don't think it's Oaken’s family, just a random family visiting the sauna. I can't say for sure though.

  9. Everyone has to make choices about what films to see or not, just like you choose not to see those Chinese films. Different people have different tastes and things that you like isn't going to be liked by everyone. I can say that I myself have no interest in seeing Frozen because it doesn't look like the kind of film I like. So yes I will miss out on it, just like everyone else misses out on other films.

That's right, everyone has to make choices. But there are people who might love that kind of movie, but don't have the opportunity to even choose it because of the limited theaters/screens. Now THEY will miss out on it.

  10. Well yeah, but back then most people here didn't know there would be big competitions for Frozen. Until a week ago, I didn't know The Monkey King would be released just days before Frozen. I thought after DM2 the market would be empty. Although, I should've figured that there would be local blockbuster movies released on Lunar New Year. And btw most people thought 30m was average, NOT conservative. Only few of them thought 50m was possible, and they're not familiar with Chinese box office. Also, not until recently someone pointed out that Frozen would be less appealing to Chinese audience. So yeah, I think I understand why people came out with that numbers.

And I get about the movies-are-disposable thing. It's the same here too, but for slightly different reasons. Theaters have limited screens so after 3 weeks they have to give the screens to new movies. But what I meant was, did they already have some kind of agreement before its release about how long Frozen would be played, or the limited time is just a natural thing? Like if there were no movies released next weekend, would it still be in the theaters?

  11. Is Lego a thing at all in Asia? I know it has a huge European and American presence, but I'm not sure about the rest of the world.

Well, everyone here are familiar with Lego. The kids play with it and the adults played with it when they were kids. I guess it is popular, but I'm not sure if it's THAT popular.

  12. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Frozen will be making much of a splash in China. It is only slated to be kept in Theaters for 10 days and with less than 13% of the total screen share. This is mostly due to the local animated movies that have recently been released over there like the Monkey King.

Actually the competitions that Frozen is facing are NOT animated movies. The Monkey King is a CGI-fest live action movie. But that's not important. Anyway, is Frozen really in theaters only for 10 days? Or there are just so many competitions, especially from local rom-com movies on VD, that Frozen is presumed to only have 10 days to make money, while not necessarily out of the theaters?

  13. its pathetic that we call a 10M gross in a huge market like Japan as impressive. It appears there is limited appeal for hollywood movies in Japan. Its crazy considering how many hollywood movies used to gross 10B Yen earlier.

You got it wrong. $10m isn't impressive at all. But for a Thor movie, it is. Actually the increase from the first movie is the one that's impressive. That shows that superhero movies are getting more accepted in Japan. Usually, only Spiderman did big numbers there, while other superhero movies tanked. For example, X-Men 3 only made 1.5 billion yen in the year when Hollywood movies were bigger (Dead Man's Chest and Goblet of Fire made more than 10 billion yen). But for other movies, say Frozen or TF4, $10m would still be a very disappointing number.

  14. Disney Japan just released the official japanes movie version of let it go! :)

That's Takako Matsu? She's one of my favorite actresses in Japan! I know she can sing, but I didn't know she could sing that well :o. The singing is great but the lyrics though... I don't know, a little bit cheesy? Kinda too literal. It would work as a J-Pop song, not so much as a musical song. But that's just me. :P

  15. I have been thinking about what kind of impact to expect from japan and i have the feeling that many themes in the movie will resonate extremely strongly with the gp there. Though i mostly know about japanese culture secondhand i believe things like sacrifice for the good of others, being persistent in the face of great odds and the european fairitale setting in general should be bid draws... and as already mentioned by others 1B WW should be pretty safe since SK can make up for china underperforming and as long as japan does not completely bomb (which, as you mentioned should not be the case) everything should work out :)

That IS so Japanese. I never thought about it but yeah, Frozen is very appealing in that way.

Well, big Miyazaki numbers in general would be nice. But SA would probably mean it'd end up #1 WW for 2013.

That would be amazing, but even Miyazaki numbers in general are hard too reach. Only Avatar managed to match them ($150m+) in the last 10 years. But Finding Nemo's or Toy Story 3's number ($100m+) is possible if everything goes well.

  16. SK Friday

    212,625 +22.4% from Thursday,+25.3% from last Friday

    current total: 2,095,473

    projected Saturday: 530,000

    Projected Sunday: 500,000(total: 3,100,000)

Next Friday will be Lunar New Year's Day, we can see no drop next weekend.

will be around 4.8M after next Sunday.

That's just crazy! So the target now is 6m+ admissions then.
