I agree with this. Sometimes the best performances are the simple, quiet ones. I thought Bullock did that very well. I was surprised about the backlash she got from winning BA.

I think a lot of times (not all) the performances are more than just emotional, testy teary-eyed shouting. But the Acedemy just chose those montage to be shown cause they're more showy.
