The47th
I haven't found a thread for this, and I really think it's worth opening one. The Comeback is a 2005 TV series starring Lisa Kudrow, that follows the making of a reality show focused around Valerie Cherish, a sitcom star that is planning her return to the spotlight. The 13 episodes consist on a raw cut of the footage for the reality show, hence showing us an honest and un-edited version of the hapennings around the production and the other projects that Valerie engages on. Despite having only one season and being received with mixed reviews at the time, the show provided Lisa her seventh Emmy nomination, and with the time it has been recognized as a show that was ahead of the curve in terms of character portrayal and storytelling. Entertainment Weekly named it one f the 10 best shows of the past decade. What is more exciting is that The Comeback is making its return to HBO this November with a six-episode second season. After all this factual presentation, let's get to business. This is an insanely funny, smart, complex show. It is actually insane how they were able to mix so many ideas and provide the characters with so much depth and still make it work as a comedy show. There are so many readings to what you're seeing on camera and it is so well acted and filmed that sometimes it's hard to tell it's scripted. It provides with clarity a dual vision to the main character, who is so desperate for attention, she engages on this production that is going to make public all the most humiliating aspects of her life, but at the same time she tries to hide them and play them down. But the thing is, the harder she tries, the more obvious they seem to the public. And the more she attempts to portray herself as charming and funny, the more manipulative and fake she seems. Ultimately, the joke will be on her, as not only we are seeing Valerie's real persona, but the producers will also manipulate the events recorded, so the actual reality show ends up being completely different from either what it really happened or what Valerie wanted it to be. Anyway, it's a wonderful, wonderful show, and you could spend hours talking about the different readings and all the other meta-components of the story. A good proof of that is this interview I watched last night. An incredibly incisive analysis of the show. filmlover
This show was absolutely hilarious. So overjoyed that it's coming back. Long live Valerie Cherish! "Note to self: after a long day at work, I don't want to see that!"
