It's like they made two different movies here.
 
One, the first 130 minutes, was exactly what I thought the movie would be, watchable but overlong with a lot of filler and mostly bland musical numbers. But there's also some surprises like the complex characters (and not extreme caricatures that musicals are so fond of) and great chemistry between leads.
 
The other movie would be the last 40 minutes, there is a complete change of tone and the quality of it increases exponentially. Emotional, gripping and having something to say would be qualities that I seek in movies and Sound of Music final 40 minutes has that in spades.
 
One thing is for certain, it has no business being 3 hours long.
