  1. I'm confused. I thought last Saturday was part of the Chinese New Year holiday period. Can someone clarify which days were the Chinese New Year holiday period (someone said it only had 6 days this year?)? And was this current weekend a working weekend?
  2. How is Warcraft a co-production? It was made before Wanda acquiring Legendary, isn't it? Can someone on this forum verify/confirm whether Warcraft qualify as a co-production?
  3. So the reviews are out, and it is horrible. Do people think this will get good legs? I guess the fans will be watching it, but will it attract general audiences?
  4. The reaction for The Jungle Book is good, but surprisingly not as good as you would've expect given the critical reviews. It currently has a 8.1 on Douban (it was 8.3 or something before, but has dropped a bit since it opened) and 7.7 on Mtime. Whereas Zootopia still has a 9.3 on Douban and 8.7 on Mtime even though it was been in theaters for over a month.
  5. So what is Ip Man 3's actual final box office? Are websites like Maoyan going to deduct that part of the box office for Ip Man 3?
  6. If there are irregular box office activities, you can definitely spot them. According to the news articles, IP Man 3's box office was widely questioned and doubted because the level was so extreme. And it has been reported everywhere, ranging from The Straits Times to Los Angeles Times. I haven't heard anything like that said about Mermaid at all. And if there were something like that to happen, it is easy to spot them, just look at its daily box office trends, compare its showtimes with box office percentage, last week vs. this week etc.
  7. From what I understand, the vast majority of Monster Hunt's box office was authentic, the "fudged" box office portion was a small percentage relative to its overall box office. And it only happened at the end portion of its box office run. Monster Hunt's box office would've been close to Furious 7's regardless if it happened or not. According to these news reports, Ip Man 3's box office on the other hand, is on a whole other level. It is an entirely different story from the start.
  8. How is ip man 3 doing? Any new updates? What is its final going to be? Still around 58m HK?
  9. So where is Ip Man 3's final total headed to? Is it going to pass Shaolin Soccer?
  10. Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno getting so many showtimes has to be one of the most bizarre things I think I've ever witnessed at the Chinese box office. Can someone explain to me why? That film came out in Japan in April, six months ago, and it was a moderate hit, but nothing like Doraemon. Moreover, it seems the audience reaction is not very good. It currently has a 5.6 rating on Douban (it seems many in China have already watched it online since it has been out for so long and the reaction is not good) and a 6.2 rating on IMDB. So why would theatres give so many screens to a 2D animated film that really has no indication of it being a potential blockbuster and that many people have already seen it? Also look at the fact that The Little Prince didn't even get nearly as many showtimes, and it got very good reaction from the audience (8.3 rating on Douban). So to think that Detective Conan is going to take away almost all of The Little Prince's showtimes come Friday (looks like its going to drop from 14% to 4%)...
  11. Lost in Hong Kong has an 8.2 rating on Gewara and an 8.9 rating on Maoyan, the two biggest ticketing website. So its audience reaction is pretty good isn't it? This is certainly no Gone with the Bullets.
  12. Is the upcoming weekend and Monday (03/09) a Holiday in China to? Because of the Yuanxiao (Lantern Festival)? Does anyone know?
  13. Is this Chinese New Year holiday period more than 7 days? Is Friday 2/27/15 still a holiday?
  14. The word of mouth for Mockingjay part 1 isn't very good. I checked on Douban, and it only has a 5.9 rating at the moment. Some of the (more amusing) comments include that it is just an episode of a CW show.
  15. Just realized that Fleet of Time is an Enlight Pictures production. Those guys sure knows how to make hits, after So Young, My Old Classmate, The Breakup Guru...
  16. So "Fleet of Time", a Chinese teen drama based on a best selling novel and directed by Zhang Yibai, is going to have a opening day of estimated 55 million yuan , and that is not including the 20 million+ yuan it got during last Saturday's preview. Pretty stunning box office! It just goes to show that Chinese audiences love nostalgic films about the high school/college years and loss of innocence (see So Young, My Old Classmate). Even John Woo is no match! And John Woo and his screenwriter Wang Hui-ling probably should have figured out that a war film (The Crossing) about the Kuomingtang's defeat and Taiwan isn't going to interest most Chinese audiences that much nowadays. Had Woo made the film into a comedy and put Huang Bo in it...now that would be box office gold!
  17. I think another reason why Kung Fu Jungle didn't do so well also has to do with how horrible Iceman was. That film definitely soured the audience's perception of Donnie Yen a bit (if his other recent movies didn't do it already). Iceman was one of the worst received mainstream releases in China this year. The reviews were toxic and flopped at the box office. That definitely affected Kung Ju Jungle. I also hope they just cancel Iceman 2 already.
  18. I thought Helios didn't have a release date yet or moved to 2015? Is it still releasing this year?
  19. Even though it did pass 100 million yuan, Kung Fu Jungle's box office performance has been quite disappointing, considering Special ID made 155 million yuan last year, and even Iceman made 140 million yuan earlier this year. I think the distributor wanted/expected at least 200-300 million yuan for Kung Fu Jungle, especially for a major film of this kind of budget.
  20. I've really like several of Johnnie To's films in the past, such as Drug War, Election...and him getting to do a romantic comedy is definitely intriguing, but Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 simply does not look good at all. The reviews for the film coming from the Toronto Film Festival are also not good. I wonder how the film is going to hold up against Interstellar and the Penguins of Madagascar.
  21. The numbers from that website don't seem to be that different than Entgroup's http://www.cbooo.cn/. Of course, I do see that the Entgroup's box office numbers always seems to be a bit on the lower side. However, I do have to mention the looks and presentation of http://www.cbooo.cn/is fantastic. The website looks very slick with all the pie charts and graphs. Also, what is this http://58921.com/website? Who publishes them? Are they a well-known website on Chinese box office?
  22. I think they (the distributor?) shouldn't have ended Breakup Buddies' run so soon. It could still add another few million yuan (10-15?) to its total box office it they kept in in theaters a bit longer.
  23. Didn't Breakup Buddies got an extension? So how come it ended its run in just a month (like most Hollywood films)? I thought Chinese films usually gets more time in theatres than imported films?
