I'm sure Mickey Mouse is shaking in his boots over potential competition from Ben Shapiro. Except he isn't. The only success Shapiro's "kids entertainment" plan (if he even follows through with it, knowing what cheapskates these people are) would enjoy is the lifetime's worth of material they would be giving SNL.

They should be more worried about their lobbying efforts to keep the legalization of gambling out of Florida. They can’t have it both ways. Either they are an activist company who serves half the country or they are this family friendly entertainment company that does not make R rated films because that would ruin their image. Either is fine, but they can’t be both. And the legalization of gambling in Florida is a bigger threat than Ben Shapiro ever will be.

Just $100M in "kids entertainment" (whatever their definition of "kids entertainment" is, certainly it involves ugly undertones) when Disney spends literally billions each year in content? And from the people who are eager to call Disney and their other detractors "groomers" even though there's plenty projection to go around as plenty of people in their party who have been faced with allegations of being inappropriate with minors?

Congrats to Gina Carano for falling from the ultimate family-friendly streaming service to one that'll die an even quicker death than Quibi (remember them?) did.

Also gonna go out on a hunch and predict that Disney World resort duty manager going on about a "silent majority" supporting the bill (whatever helps him sleep at night) who is also planning to run for Congress as a Republican probably won't be double-dipping for much longer.

Competition has to start somewhere. If they gain traction, they could seriously eat into Disney’s family audience. This is how Disney themselves started out. It’s not one company, but Disney losing their image as a family friendly company. But that isn’t Disney’s biggest issue. Threats like these are:

Really wish people who want theaters back and thriving would go see adult dramas like Tammy Faye, Cry Macho or Card Counter in addition to the big comic stuff. Theaters need those, too

Dear Evan Hansen is probably flopping next week

It’s tough to justify paying for Crying Macho when it is free on HBOmax.

The thing about streaming services like HBO Max and Paramount Plus is...they're not making any profit. These services are meant to replace a different dwindling revenue stream: broadcast/cable television. They won't replace both revenue from television AND movies. I recommend following David Poland on Twitter. Industry insider/journalist who says they're just throwing darts at a wall blindfolded because they're drunk on streaming, believing they can all be like Netflix. Being like Netflix only works if you have 200 mil subs.

We rag on Disney for PA, but that at least is a bonafide revenue stream. Getting subscribers to HBO does very little for WB except move money around that they were already making.

The math doesn’t add up to me either. The 1980’s created new revenue streams for films. Home video sales were making studios lots of money. They turned films that were failures at the BO into successes, and made blockbusters even more successful.

Then came cable television, which was an additional revenue stream. Home video converted into DVDs and Blu Rays.

Now, DVD sales have almost evaporated and there is cord cutting with cable. Therefore, streaming services should cover some of the lost revenue from those avenues. If a studio skips theatrical altogether to put a movie on a streaming service, they keep all the profits of the streaming subscription, but that is less than half of their cut from theatrical, and they still havent replaced the lost revenue from declining DVD and cord cutting cable subscriber losses.

The best return on investment is to release a movie theatrically, then put it on your streaming service. That’s what makes the most money.

James Cameron might have something to say:)...Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorcese, too...

    I'll keep thinking...

I cant’t think of more than 3 movies for each of those directors that would make a top 10 list all-time. You could say 4 for Cameron if you are a massive original Terminator fan, but to say it’s top 10 all-time seems a stretch.

Everyone that was here 9 year's ago and still here now will know way more now than back then.

Reading a 2012 message where disney animation is not on top need some mental going back, Frozen was right at the corner and the Pixar acquisition/Lasseter use to reput Disney Animation had already happen the moment that message was written, it was just not fully known yet.

It’s really hard to believe I have been here for over 9 years.

It is a bit fun to read old message like those:

We did learn since then I feel like, for one many Star Wars movie where independent movie fully self financed (not only they have the previous success money but the merchandise deal for those are much higher than the production cost) after the first one and no someone financing a movie does not mean they get updated of what goes on. They were even rumors than marketing on the prequels was on LucasArt (but again it was probably mostly paid via the merchandising deal)

    http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/Movies/9905/31/lucas.indie/

One thing they probably don't think of is George Lucas' $115 million "Star Wars" prequel blockbuster, "The Phantom Menace." But indie film it is, perhaps the biggest and most expensive indie film ever made, completely financed and created outside the Hollywoodland studio system by Lucasfilm Ltd.

Back when I wrote the quoted post, I did not know that Fox only financed the first Star Wars movie, and that the sequels and prequels were financed by George Lucas through Lucasfilm.
